Oldman says Hollywood is ‘run by Jews,’ then offers over-the-top apology

Gary Oldman

This reads like French farce. Gary Oldman gave an interview to Playboy in which he said that Mel Gibson was the victim of political correctness, because Jews “run” Hollywood– that story was reported yesterday– and as day follows night, today the British actor has reportedly offered an apology to the Anti Defamation League that praises Jews as the “chosen people,” who are persecuted throughout the ages, who are first to hear the word of god, and…

First, the Telegraph reports on the Playboy interview:

Oldman said: “Mel Gibson is in a town that’s run by Jews and he said the wrong thing because he’s actually bitten the hand that I guess has fed him – and doesn’t need to feed him anymore because he’s got enough dough.

“He’s like an outcast, a leper, you know?

”But some Jewish guy in his office somewhere hasn’t turned and said, “That f***ing kraut” or “F*** those Germans,” whatever it is? We all hide and try to be so politically correct. That’s what gets me.’

Here is Oldman’s reported letter to the ADL:

Dear Gentlemen of the ADL:

I am deeply remorseful that comments I recently made in the Playboy Interview were offensive to many Jewish people. Upon reading my comments in print—I see how insensitive they may be, and how they may indeed contribute to the furtherance of a false stereotype. Anything that contributes to this stereotype is unacceptable, including my own words on the matter. If, during the interview, I had been asked to elaborate on this point I would have pointed out that I had just finished reading Neal Gabler’s superb book about the Jews and Hollywood, An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews invented Hollywood. The fact is that our business, and my own career specifically, owes an enormous debt to that contribution.

I hope you will know that this apology is heartfelt, genuine, and that I have an enormous personal affinity for the Jewish people in general, and those specifically in my life. The Jewish People, persecuted thorough the ages, are the first to hear God’s voice, and surely are the chosen people.

I would like to sign off with “Shalom Aleichem”—but under the circumstances, perhaps today I lose the right to use that phrase, so I will wish you all peace–Gary Oldman.

I was about to quote Gabler myself. Jews did invent Hollywood, and if Jews don’t dominate the power structure of Hollywood, I don’t know who does. And yes, many of them are pro-Israel. Look at all the pro-Palestinian features that the major studios have done. Look what happened to Vanessa Redgrave.

Soraya Nadia McDonald at the Washington Post is appropriately arch. “Surprise Surprise, Gary Oldman apologizes”:

But for some reason, he did not apologize to other groups and people he insulted, including gays, African Americans and Nancy Pelosi.

Looks like a ‘non apology apology’ to me. It’s just SO over the top – ‘chosen people’, ‘Dear Gentlemen of the ADL’, LOL!

Seems to me like Oldman is covering himself – he can turn around and say ”Look I DID apologise’ but the ‘apology’ is so dripping with sarcasm that you’d have to wonder how sincere it is.

”’But for some reason, he did not apologize to other groups and people he insulted, including gays, African Americans and Nancy Pelosi.”

Which of course, supports Oldman’s original point.

LMAO. This is great. The first half of the letter says, “Sorry if you’re offended, but yes, Hollywood is run by Jews. Always has been. In fact, Neal wrote a book about it.”

As for the second half, oh, I so hope that it is intended as the kind of mockery that it comes off as. It’s just so over the top and nonsensical to be, but yet not so far that the dolts at the ADL would catch on that they’re the targets.

“first to hear God’s voice, and surely are the chosen people”!!! LOL. It’ll probably never occur to the ADLers, as they’re pumping out their chest and strutting like cocks on the walk, that Gary Oldman is an atheist and, as such, the line can’t really be read seriously or any way other than dripping with wry contempt. But with plausible deniability, which it the brilliant part.

Mel Gibson is a racist and a bigot.

      Oldman is NOT.

He’s absolutely correct that Hollywood is a ‘run by’ (conspiratorial phrasing; I’d rephrase as ‘they are the most dominant ethnoreligious group in the industry by a wide margin’) American Jews.

This shouldn’t even be an issue. No one would deny that African-Americans are the most dominant racial/ethnic group in American basketball.

There are socio-economic reasons for this.

It’s idiotic how when we talk about sociology, we have to omit Jewish identity and the Jewish demographic entirely. Unless of course it’s something positive (even if it’s conspiratorial in nature or close to a generalization) – ie Jews have high IQs.

Think about that – I recall hophmi elaborating on that or maybe it was yonira (old school troll from 2008-ish). And one of the trolls said that it’s because Jews are ‘taught’ to be more studious or something.

I thought that was hilarious. Although, there are certainly positive stereotypes. Everyone in my family and my extended family is a doctor (except for an uncle and a cousin). We also usually marry other doctors (true for 2nd generation certainly).

There are positive and negative stereotypes for my group.

But when it comes to Jewish identity politics, the parsing and the policing are ****ing bullshit.

And Abe Foxman and the Defamation League are full of it.

I agree. It is a FACT that Jews are represented in the Hollywood elite in a way completely disproportionate to their numbers – about 2% of the general population. Why is it taboo to point that out? Especially when, if it suits them, Israeli leaders love to boast of Jewish influence in America?

It’s often the case that certain groups dominate in certain sectors. In the UK, for example, the political class is currently dominated by ‘Old Etonians’ and other posh boys. Nobody would hesitate to point that out – it’s an observable fact. So why is it so taboo where American Jews are concerned?

here’s another part of the interview (which i want to read in full btw): https://music.yahoo.com/news/gary-oldman-blasts-liberal-hollywood-defends-mel-gibson-040019096.html

The Dark Knight Rises actor also defended Baldwin’s use of derogatory and homophobic terms. “Alec calling someone an F-A-G in the street while he’s pissed off coming out of his building because they won’t leave him alone. I don’t blame him. So they persecute.”

Oldman later singles out satirical news programs like The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and Real Time With Bill Maher.

“Well, if I called Nancy Pelosi a c-—t — and I’ll go one better, a f—ing useless cunt — I can’t really say that,” he begins. “But Bill Maher and Jon Stewart can, and nobody’s going to stop them from working because of it.”

Oldman continues: “Bill Maher could call someone a fag and get away with it. He said to Seth MacFarlane this year, ‘I thought you were going to do the Oscars again. Instead they got a lesbian.’ He can say something like that. Is that more or less offensive than Alec Baldwin saying to someone in the street, ‘You fag’? I don’t get it.”

Earlier, Oldman voiced his disdain for people in the culture hiding “behind comedy and satire to say things we can’t ordinarily say, because it’s all too politically correct.”

Who cares about the religion of those who own the studios or whatever else that can be called Hollywood. Only the ADL type watch groups who’s task it to try and contain anything that they feel might develop into the mal-odorous stench of anti-semitism.

It’s ok to laud someone for being jewish only when you stoop to your knees and accept reprogramming. But heaven forbid if you laud a jew for being wealthy, like if it were a sin for jews to be wealthy but not for gentiles.

Like the Stalin show trials those who stoop and make a public contrition still go on to become persona’s non grata to some degree or another.
Sort of like getting sprayed by a skunk, the smell lingers on you.

The ADL must think that they have to manage the image of jews around the world, these show trials only serve to point to the power that produce these b.s confessions and reprogrammed public figures.

Conflating Israel with Judaism has turned out to be the disaster that those old non Zionist Rebbe’s of Europe predicted this conflation would lead to.

“The ‘power structure of Hollywood’ is dominated by the CEOs of the corporations that own the studios.”

LMAO. No it’s not. Although those people are important, do they know how to put a picture together? To market it? To get a star interested? No, no and no. Among the most powerful in Hollywood are the heads of the film divisions and people like Harvey Weinstein, Katherine Kennedy, some of the top directors and stars. Probably the most powerful person in Hollywood over the last few years has probably been Kevin Feige, who runs Marvel Pictures.

It is, in fact, false to say that “the Jews” run Hollywood, like a monolith. But to suggest that there are not a lot of Jews in the film business in powerful positions is more false, bordering on the comical. The film business is, compared to the general population, disproportionately Jewish. (It’s also disproportionately gay and disproportionately young (among those in the production side.)) And those who take issue with Oldman’s statement are bordering on the comical, because it can’t fairly be read as saying anything other than “There are a lot of powerful people in Hollywood who are Jews and Gibson was stupid for ticking them off.”

Another zionist game of whac a mole when someone brings attention to the fact that zionists rule in every branch of the government, media, hollywood, banks, and what have you. Oldman will now toe the line. He was made into yet another example of how such people are dealt with, like others before him.
    This explains it all:
“But for some reason, he did not apologize to other groups and people he insulted, including gays, African Americans and Nancy Pelosi.”

Without disputing the assertion that there are people of Jewish background in various positions, I think it crosses over to “The Protocols” to describe America with a phrase such as “… Zionists rule every branch of government, media, Hollywood, banks…”. Describing America as ” under occupation” also mirrors the Zionist Occupation Government stance of “The Order” and other fascist groups. This type of hyperbole really has no place in an intelligent discussion.

“An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews invented Hollywood.”

This is a very good example for the coming book by piotr “Idiot’s guide to anti-Semitism” (unless piotr will not be accepted, perhaps a new series is needed, like “Explanations for mentally slow: XXX”. Clearly, the claim that Jews invented Hollywood is not anti-Semitic per se, and neither is the claim that “Jews run Hollywood”. It is not even singling-out: of all ethnicities running Hollywood … that person did not mention Livonians, Parsis, Chinese, just Jews” — whom are we kidding? This is an excellent example of BEGRUDGING. It is OK to be proud (if you are a Jew) or admire (if you are not), but if hint that you do not like it, or you do not like some of its consequences, this is begrudging. Appropriately, the letter of apology basically states that Oldman LOVES the fact that Jews run Hollywood, which may be tad over the top, but admiration is not on the crime-thought list.

Sometimes we even pretend an actor is Jewish just because we like him enough that we think he deserves to be on our team. We brag about Jewish authors, Jewish politicians, Jewish directors. Every time someone mentions any movie or book or piece of art, we inevitably say something like, “Did you know that he was Jewish?” That’s just how we roll.”

Actor Gary Oldman Ends His Career in Hollywood with Racist, Anti-Semitic Interview

    by Roger Friedman – June 24, 2014 8:35 am

British actor Gary Oldman has had a nice very career in Hollywood. Now, it’s over. Oldman tells Playboy magazine that Hollywood is “run by Jews,” suggests that those Jews make fun of Germans, and says that the policeman with whom Mel Gibson became embroiled in a huge anti-Semitic scandal probably is anti-Semitic himself. Oldman seems unaware that James Mee, the policeman, is Jewish himself.

Good bye, Gary. We can live without you. And trust me, we will. Oldman was nominated for an Oscar in 2012 for “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” I hope he enjoyed it.

he’s one of my favorite and most versatile actors of his generation, without a doubt. it would be hollywood’s loss. no amount of ben aflicks can replace him, ever.

      Agreed, Annie.

I think he’s brilliantly talented– one of my favorites as well. Informed. intelligent and talented; daring to question the status quo– what’s not to like?

Oldman is one of the great actors of his generation. His performance in “The Contender” was great and I am a big fan of “Rosencranz and Gildenstern are Dead.” Mel Gibson is one of the iconic actors of his generation. When a celebrity gets pulled over for driving drunk and then curses out the ethnicity of the arresting officer, well, where do you think that’s going to lead. When the celebrity’s father is a Holocaust denier, go and add that into the mix and see where it is going to lead. (Add a movie like “Passion of Christ” and see where that is going to lead.) Certainly I will agree that Foxman and the ADL are clumsy oafs, yet nonetheless the reality of Gibson would require some fancy words by some imaginary nonclumsy (alternate universe) ADL to hit all the marks regarding Gibson’s history and still point out the tangled crown of thorns that Gibson claims for himself. As far as ADL versus Gary Oldman, that’s nothing but a battle for the gossip page. The point about political correctness is a minor one and fun to talk about.

What was so wrong about “Passion of Christ”?

Walker- It made a lot of money. It was a soft core S and M film. There was a lot of controversy about one of the verses from Matthew that was expressed in the film in Aramaic, a particular verse that I bet you can recall or guess, if you were hard pressed. The history of passion plays and the role played by the villain Pharisees or Sanhedrin or those labeled as Jews is a long one and the history of Jew hatred that accompanied those passion plays is also a long one. I for one did not fear major pogroms as a result of a movie, but one cannot deny that the controversy, if not the verse from Matthew and if not the rest of the film, was significant.

“It made a lot of money.”

So that’s something wrong with it?

“It was a soft core S and M film.”

You’re disgusting. One wonders if someone created a film which displayed the most important moment in history for the Jewish faith, in a stark and unflinching manner, you would be so flippant if someone insulted it in such a disgusting way.

“There was a lot of controversy about one of the verses from Matthew that was expressed in the film in Aramaic”

So? To Christians like Gibson, it’s part of the Christian scriptures, inspired by God. Who are you to tell a Christian that he must abandon that portion of his scriptures because you don’t like it?

“The history of passion plays and the role played by the villain Pharisees or Sanhedrin or those labeled as Jews is a long one and the history of Jew hatred that accompanied those passion plays is also a long one.”

So what? I mean, yes, that is a historical tragedy, but that is, at most, a condemnation of the societies in which they happened, not of the art itself, and certainly not of this film, which was a powerful masterpiece.

“one cannot deny that the controversy, if not the verse from Matthew and if not the rest of the film, was significant.”

The “controversy” was a disgusting attempt by the likes of Abe Foxman to tell someone else what they were permitted to hold as part of their sacred scriptures and religious believes. (And, of course, if one were to demand that the Jews of the world excise the who portion of their religion about being “chosen people” and about Palestine being “given to the Jewish people” and whatnot, then you know Foxman the hypocrite would damn that person as an antisemite, but he never gets the point that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.)

He, and all of those who condemned this film for the reasons you suggest here, should be ashamed of themselves.

      yonah,

You have cause and effect a bit mixed up here regarding Gibson, the Passion of the Christ and the police officer. What you had there was a man with a particular religious upbringing and strong religious beliefs who has, unfortunately, an addiction to alcohol and anger-management issues. He then creates the most personal piece of art of his life, one which encompasses everything which he values and holds holy about his faith. Then, you have Jewish organizations slandering it in the most unfair, unwarranted and merciless ways, insulting not only him and his film, but his very religion in the process.

Having experienced months of the most personal of attacks by people who claim to speak for or behalf of the Jews, one would have to be rather stone-hearted to not develop some negative attitudes (warranted or not) towards those who have been attacking him. Add a lot of alcohol, the aforementioned anger-management issues and a innocent bystander cop who happens to be Jewish and ugliness ensues.

So, no he certainly should not have said what he did, but you’re trying to blow smoke up everyone’s butt by trying to blame his father when the real guilty parties are Mel Gibson himself and, to a lesser extent for instigation, those who leveled wrongful and slanderous attacks against him.

a little elliptical in places but i have the feeling i agree with what you said in that post, Yonah. Points well taken.

      I would say this:

      1. ADL doesnt matter — it simultaneously does an important job, and goes over the top sometimes, and it’s good to call the ADL out when it does.

      2. “The Jews run Hollywood” — i would say, yes to a great extent, they do (I’d like to say “we” coz i am jewish but sadly, i have no piece of that particular action ). It would also be fair to say that as a people, we bestride the legal world (at least in the US) like a colossus. Neither statement is inherently anti-semitic, but either COULD be if the intent was to be racist in saying so. Thus, as an example, one could say — without being racist — that “the African American community seems to produce a large number of excellent athletes”. That might just be a statement of fact. But we all instinctively know that this kind of remark COULD be intended to mean blacks are “natural athletes” (sub-text — they should stick to entertainment and sports) and if it is uttered to make that kind of point, yes, it is very deeply racist. So “The Jews run Hollywood” is a distraction. Context is everything. It’s complicated. Some things just are

      3. What a lot of the comments in this thread seem to miss is that Oldman was saying that the things the very publicly visible movie star Gibson was saying were not anti-semitic. In other words, Oldman (ab)used the public forum of a published interview to opine that to say the things Gibson said was OK because it was just letting off steam and fundamentally not racist. And that is where Oldman is terribly wrong…….and the sometimes OTT, sometimes just really annoying ADL was entirely correct to excoriate him for his interview —even if they could have done it in any number of different tones (they should try a few new ones out).

But I don’t get a scintilla of satisfaction or enjoyment in reading Oldman’s drivel about how we are the Chosen People blah blah blah — he should have cut that cringe-worthy, toe-curling crap out because this concept of “Chosen People” is, frankly, the stuff of theology and repeated misunderstanding throughout history by both christians and jews, and it is clear that Oldman hasnt got a clue what he’s talking about.

A simple apology for a stoooopid and uninformed white-washing of the odious Gibson would have sufficed. Shouldnt have needed more than a few sentences.

He is definitely presenting it as a sincere apology rather than as an act. The first apology looked sincere enough, and was even very complimentary of the directors’ culture. But that apology was not enough, so it means a more intense apology is necessary, as he realizes. His interview with Kimmel is the intense apology requested.

Now what does Oldman think privately? He gave sane reasons- pointing to a book and making favorable compliments, and when he was forced to apologize he was not given a thoroughly persuasive rebuttal, but an assertion that people do not follow an agenda. It’s unlikely that making an assertion will persuade him otherwise about a whole, researched, complimentary book.

Did the ADL demand Seth MacFarland and Ted Bear recant their Jews-Run-Hollywood jokes, and did those two comply? That skit was beamed to a wide mainstream American audience on prime time TV. http://mondoweiss.net/2013/02/controversy-oscar-hollywood.html
