‘An extreme rightwing regime behaving in the most criminal fashion and defying the world and unscrupulously using the Holocaust to justify what they’re doing’

A lot of folks have seen this, according to Youtube. It’s the first truly great speech I’ve seen from a western politician decrying Israeli impunity. David Norris is an Irish senator. Note that he says that he had a home in Israel or Palestine; he had a longtime relationship with Ezra Nawi, the great Israeli activist. Some highlights:

It changed from a leftwing socially directed country to an extreme rightwing regime that is behaving in the most criminal fashion and defying the world and unscrupulously using the Holocaust to justify what they’re doing and it’s time that rag was torn away from them.

Israel is afraid of Palestinian unity. That’s what this is all about. It has nothing to do with [the three murdered teens]…

My Jewish and my pro-Israel friends say to me sometimes, How would you fare as a gay man in any of these–? I know exactly how I’d fare. It doesn’t mean that it is correct to deny people the right to choose their own government. What self-respecting or sane people would allow their enemies to choose their government for them?

America has a shameful role to play in this. Israel could not get away with these shameful acts of piracy and brigandage if it wasn’t for the protecting shadow of the United States of America. And I condemn President Obama for his utter inaction.

There are no words to describe what happened yesterday in Jabaliya.

Six attacks on schools. And these were deliberate.

Israel’s policy is to shoot first and weep later.

Good news from Dublin , Ireland.Saturday August 9th.

An estimated 10,000 people showed up for this weeks Protest.

This is twice the previous highest number which was 2 weeks ago.Today,s protest was the 5th one in a row.The protest was held outside the Israeli Embassy. There were several speakers including a Jewish Academic who works at trinity.
A live hook up to Al Shifa Hospital was arranged through which a Doctor relayed the Health situation in Gaza.

One of the organizers said that as long as Israel keeps their siege on Gaza , Irish people will maintain the siege on the Israeli embassy every weekend for as long as it takes.

I watched this over and over, and still do. He is on fire!! It is so true what he says. Not many politicians have the guys to be honest about Israel or even say anything. Which is even more shameful!

I watched this event live last week.He is brilliant.

David Norris ran for President against Michaels D Higgins who was elected.
David Norris had to pull out when GOI the dirty tricks Dept waged a campaign against him and raised the issue of his Israel partner who had been charged with sexual offenses against a minor. These were denied by Norris who said his partner who was a pro Palestinian activist was the victim of a Kangaroo court.

Norris would have made a fine President. He is an Intellectual and a great scholar.

      amigo,

in this context, it is not totally clear of GOI mentioned to deploy dirty tricks is the government of Israel or Ireland. One can make a reasonable guess, but it would help to be more specific.

Sorry, I mean the Government Of Israel.

I am sure my government has a dirty tricks dept but it would pale in comparison to the occupation Nation.

The guys in the background are all just filing their nails and counterfeiting extreme indifference, as if their complicity weren’t under the bright spotlight.

Still there’s the old softening of the edges. He condemns Obama for being ‘silent’, whereas of course Obama, far from being ‘silent’, was and is actively repeating Israel’s insulting lies while replenishing Israel with fresh weapons. Also, he says the problem is the current rightist government and that 40 years ago Israel was somehow alright — but that’s a joke. The problem is the ideology that requires Israel to have the branding of a Jewish State, with all that this lays on the stake *economically*: and, then, the impossibility of keeping the brand of the Jewish State without using bloody violence and oppression to keep a Jewish demographic majority and guarantee the Jewish control of all social institutions.
This he came short of saying: which lets you know where the strongest taboos are.

@traintosiberia (below) – Since the beginning Israel has had a cynical policy of investing sheiks with an elevated status and privileges. This enforced a traditional patriarchal system and made the population easier to control; it also prevented Palestinian communities from becoming economically effective. Aside from that, yes it is thoroughly disgusting that the new cynical hasbarah-book mystification is that “Israel allows homosexuality”, therefore occupied Palestinians should be happy.
This meme is now in popular use simply because it acts as a flechette bomb of lies that require a great deal of labor for the victim to extract, one by one. It is also a cluster bomb that flings out insults to human intelligence and basic reason. It is a stink bomb that thinks it can play upon ‘liberal’ sensitivities.

Holocaust was an event on a different scale. But I do not know anyone who would argue that given their tragic past, Armenians cannot be found guilty of atrocities because, at worst, they acted based on their understandable fears. It is not even because Armenians were massacred en masse more than 25 years earlier than Jews, but because it is a preposterous type of argument.

But nothing is too preposterous if the media supinely or enthusiastically publish it.

Gaza is the Holocaust. I believe you’re referring to an event in the past.

.. also, when i hear “anti-Semitism” i see hatred against Palestinians.

” How would you fare as a gay man…” ?
My answer will be this – Maslow drew a pyramid of human needs . At the lowest level is the survival .
We can use this pyramid also to picture human tolerance . Gay right is a legitimate right that need to be addressed . But a society that is safe and stable is also confident of absorbing and accepting behaviors that are outside the commonly practiced way of life . It can be argued how does gay life threaten a country. It does not . But looking at America at war times will confirm that the tolerance for a lot of actions, speeches, and behaviors do disappear at all levels of the societies and a lot of behaviors are promoted that have no impact on the progress of the wars.
In time of crisis ,people want to come together as one body and mind . It helps if the community practice same religion pray to same God,speak same language, and think alike . Palestine has never been free of crisis.

What an extraordinary speech. Methinks there’s political hay to be made by being out front on this bandwagon. How often do you get to demand justice from people who are realizing they should be ashamed of themselves for having denied it? How often do you get show the depths of your scorn for right-wing fascistic lunatics who’ve been effectively hiding behind liberal and progressive stupidity? How often do you get to pull the curtain away to reveal to the broader public the absolute corruption lying at the heart of super-powers, and the new establishment? Phew. That’s why we read Mondoweiss.

I had seen the video, thank you Mr. Weiss.

I wouldn’t put the blame on the political color of the regime in Israel. Sadly, they are all the same. The first carnage in Gaza took place when the Israeli “left” was in power.

Here is what an American “democratic” outlet writes about Gaza: http://www.commdiginews.com/world-news/hamas-is-indistinguishable-from-the-palestinian-people-22681/#comment-1535235154.

    An unequivocal apology for genocide.

This can’t be emphasized enough. Though not included in the text provided here, I believe Norris said that 90% of his constituent email is in favor of Israel, and yet he speaks against Israel. With campaign funding the way it is in the U.S., it is virtually guaranteed that nothing even remotely like Norris’ candor will be heard from anyone elected to office in DC.

I came across this, which purports to be a list of dual nationals (Israel-US) in US politics.

      http://www.budgetcamerareview.com/forum/discussion/480/members-in-us-politics-who-hold-dual-usisraeli-citizenship/p1

If it is accurate, then there can be no doubt that the US government is occupied by Israel.

Australia is very tolerant of people having multiple citizenships. (I have two, my son has four.) But Federal MPs can only have one. (Australian, of course.) I don’t know about government officials.

The US, on the other hand, is not happy about US citizens having other citizenships as well (my son notwithstanding) and yet apparently tolerates all these dual citizens in high positions!

Reading the text of this speech and then watching it spoken by Norris could not more powerfully demonstrate the impact of presentation on literal content. Hearing Norris can give all of us an idea of what incredible expressivity lies in the human voice and body. Norris is wildly passionate and yet controlled.

I suspect if we were transported back to hear the great speakers of Greece and Rome, let alone the Europeans and the American orators of the 18th and 19th century, we would long for oratory to return. Martin Luther King Jr.’s death brought great oratory to a close in the United States. President Obama, no stranger to a large vocabulary, and said to speak well, comes off like a robot compared to Norris.

The average American is inept in self-expression. Speech is filled with “just sayin'”, “just my opinion”, “others may disagree”, “don’t get me wrong” etc. etc. or slams to the opposite impotence of uncontrolled emotion producing profanity. We are jellyfish sliding all around and never touching what needs to be expressed. Why? Because we have no role models, no inspiring speakers. The great speakers in America doted on the great speakers that preceded them as Lincoln admired Clay and Webster.

Notice that Norris makes no apologies, comes on full bore, grabs each topic fully and squeezes the juice from it, yet concisely with powerful words that need no elaboration, and all with only quick glances at notes and within an allotted time. Bravo, excellence of expression lives! May some, may many be inspired!

David Norris : A man of character and COURAGE

Never heard or seen a speech like that in any other “western” country of democratically (s)elected member of parliaments.

David Norris – so far and very regrettingly – is a SINGULARITY, because all the rest of European parliamentarians are COWARDS, nothing but characterless COWARDS, when it comes to call a spade a spade on Israel’s war crimes and war criminals.

    CHAPEAU, Mr. Norris!!

The killing of Palestinians along with destruction of their homes, illegal confiscation of their lands, destruction of olive trees etc took place under so called left wing Israeli governments too. David Norris finally stepping up to the plate is a good thing. But don’t pretend this violence has not been taking place for decades. Myth.

Phil you have to be notcing how often the word genocide is being used in reference to the potential mass killing of Yazidis how that same powerful word was never used in reference to Palestinians. Obama, Kerry, Chris Matthews, etc all using genocide, genocide….never for Palestinians.

The way the media follow the U.S. government’s lead in the use or nonuse of words like “genocide” and “torture” reveals the extent to which they are controlled media.

This is a rather humorous suggestion to what can be done with Israelis. Please let me know when this happens, because I do not want my land stolen or my water controlled. Some points are true though, America is the only nation that loves Israelis.
