Ideology behind Jewish terrorism is ‘official business’ of Israeli government — Avishai and Blumenthal

Max Blumenthal has been talking about the connections between the Jewish terror underground responsible for the murderous attack on the Palestinian family over the weekend and official Israel government organizations. Today for instance:

Migron, the outpost where settler terrorist leader Meir Ettinger organized, received millions in Israeli govt support

And two days ago:

Through terror, Meir Ettinger is doing the same as his grandfather [Meir] Kahane: Create new far-right political space to legitimize RW parties [referring to Naftali Bennett’s Jewish Home party among others]

Bernard Avishai, the liberal Zionist, largely agrees with Blumenthal here. He spoke to public radio station WBUR yesterday about the larger political support network for the Jewish terrorist underground:

What we’re dealing with here are a bunch of young people who are extremely marinated in a political culture in which both religiously and ideologically they view the ancient land of Israel as being theirs by promise… The question is what are the social atmospherics that produces the ideology…. The question is, what are the concentric circles around them?

We have to remember, Ettinger is sort of small potatoes. The Kahanist movement in the Israeli right is a kind of side show. I mean, you had a member of the Israeli right assassinate an Israeli prime minister 20 years ago this fall. And by the way if you take polls in Israel, somewhere between a quarter to a third of Israelis want to see the assassin freed. So you have a pretty large number of people in the country who are quite sympathetic to the ideology of these settlers even if they would never endorse an act of terror like this….

I think the Israeli right is feeling both oddly triumphant on the one hand because so many of them are crucial parts of the Netanyahu coalition, but also very defensive on the other, because they know that there is a kind of mobilization internationally against the settlement movement both in Europe and even in the United States.

So there’s a sense that any action that the Israeli government takes to constrain the settlements has got to be answered with some kind of act of dramatic resistance. Now very recently, last week, the Netanyahu government evacuated a little settlement called Beit El which was started by groups like the Hilltop Youth, and the action by these young people who perpetrated this horrible crime was they would say simply a response to the government’s treachery.

Netanyahu then turned around and authorized 300 new settlement units in other parts of the West Bank. So you have this kind of push pull in the Netanyahu government….

Naftali Bennett, who’s a crucial member of the Netanyahu government, showed up at Beit El, which the government had just evacuated… a couple of days later, and told the young activists and cadres, who were forced off that settlement, We’re with you, you’re our brothers, the government acted precipitously, under pressure, they should never have caved in.

I mean, you have this sort of curious government response to this, which is, We condemn the action, but the ideology that is presumably producing the action is actually in a way official business.

Create new far-right political space to legitimize RW parties

max mentioned this in glasgow the other night

Annie,

Your paraphrase (and understanding) looks clearer and better than the original.

Move along, nothing new here.

“While there is sufficient analysis regarding the detrimental impact of Israeli settlements on a potential peace negotiation and their alarming expansion rates, settlements are rarely spoken of in terms of their monetary price and their sources of funding. This missing piece of the discussion results from the fact that concrete figures for Israel’s investment into illegal settlements do not exist. Calculating an exact figure is essentially impossible because the majority of funding is allocated through winks and nods in a state
budget that does not distinguish between which funds are channeling to Israel proper and which are being used in the Occupied Territories of Palestine. ”

Business as usual.Quite right.

What is an average American to make of that pic of that smiling Jewish man accompanying this MW article? Who picked it, and why? Is he Adelson’s sniper son, grandson? He sure is not Tab Hunter.

Why doesn’t this surprise me one bit?

“At least one of the three suspected Jewish terrorists facing administrative detention in Israel has American citizenship, his parents said.

Gedalia and Sarah Meyer, whose 18-year-old son, Mordechai, is in custody without being formally charged in the aftermath of the firebombing last week that killed a Palestinian toddler, referenced their family’s U.S. citizenship on Wednesday at a news conference at their West Bank home in Maale Adumim.

“We made aliyah from the United States to a democratic state,” Gedalia Meyer said, according to Ynet and the Times of Israel. “Our son was at home last week. They knocked on the door last night, showed a document stating that they were taking him to jail for six months without suspicion and without explanation. … And now we find ourselves with our son in jail and do not know anything. We thought there were courts here.”

Sarah Meyer also referenced their American citizenship: “We are United States citizens and our children grew up there, in a democracy, among loving people and all our family is there. We raised the kids to love nature and all living beings. We had a good livelihood. We left everything due to our love for Israel, our children as well, and we are kind of shocked.”

Meyer was detained for six months without trial on Tuesday for his suspected involvement in the arson attack on the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes in June.

“They had to arrest someone, and [Mordechai] was the scapegoat,” Gedalia Meyer said.

Honenu, the legal aid organization that is representing Mordechai Meyer, accused the Israeli government of detaining him purely for political or public relations reasons and said, “We firmly object to the use of administrative detention against Jews.”

In Israel, administrative detention has historically been reserved primarily for Palestinian terror suspects.

Two other Jews placed in administrative detention this week were Eviatar Slonim and Meir Ettinger, grandson of the slain far-right activist Meir Kahane, an Israeli-American. It is unclear whether or not Ettinger also has American citizenship — his mother, Tova, Kahane’s daughter, made aliyah from the United States.

You left the US to become illegal squatters in an illegal ‘settlement’. I cannot believe she pulled out her US citizenship card~ “We are United States citizens and our children grew up there, in a democracy, among loving people and all our family is there. We raised the kids to love nature and all living beings. We had a good livelihood. We left everything due to our love for Israel, our children as well, and we are kind of shocked.”

Cry me a river.

Maybe your kid fell into the wrong group in the illegal settlements, maybe you should realize that you chose an apartheid, supremacist state to emigrate to~ one that is distinctly NOT a ‘democracy’. You didn’t flee persecution~ you went because of your ‘love’ of the state. Deal with it.

How about Susan Abulhawa and George Khoury and many more who can’t even get in for a visit to their homeland?

“Americans Who Aren’t Allowed to Visit Israel

U.S. citizens of Palestinian origin are routinely humiliated upon entry to Israel, yet representatives of their country refuse to come to their aid.”
