Israel is not an occupier, says Israel’s former ambassador to Canada, Peter Baker. But the history of Israeli expansion since 1948 could not be clearer: it seeks more and more land with as few Arabs on it as possible, and destroys not just the villages but the memory of those places.

Antisemitism echoed by Trump supporters is felt as a threat by Jews. We have been able to make a life in the United States, with no limits except those internalized, but reawakened Christian hostility has always been a consideration. Israelis are more used to racism.

When Zionists work so hard to center Israel in the Jewish community and shower it with praise, can they blame me as a young Jew for using just as much energy to single out Israel and hold it responsible for its crimes?

A new Israeli political group called Decision at 50 aims at ending the occupation of the West Bank, but its guiding assumption is that yet again the Israeli public should determine unilaterally the Palestinians’ fate. It has nothing to say about the occupation of Gaza or East Jerusalem, and offers no answer to the subjugation of Palestinians.
