Bill and Hillary Clinton both opposed his invitation from AIPAC in 2010

We all know what American politicians say publicly about Israel and its lobby; it’s a giant love affair. But behind closed doors, the temperature goes down, and the politicians are annoyed by the lobby. That’s the news in emails released by a neoconservative website showing that both Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton were against Bill Clinton accepting an invitation from the Israel lobby group AIPAC in 2009.

Hillary Clinton was then secretary of state and both sides were obviously playing politics. The lobby group was “begging” for the former president to speak, while the secretary of state’s chief of staff said, “we need to touch this base.” I.e., we need to keep the lobby happy.

The emails have gotten attention today because Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin describes AIPAC perjoratively as “that crowd.” (Some right wing Jews are all het-up about that.) Here’s the exchange, on Sept. 10, 2009:

[Bill Clinton aide Doug] Band: Aipac begging for wjc to come speak at conference. He doesnt think he should unless you all do.

Abedin: U really want to consider sending him into that crowd?

[State Department counselor and chief of staff] Cheryl Mills: Lets ask Hrc b/c we need to touch this base.

Abedin: She will say the same thing.

Band: Which is Go or not go.

Abedin: No go to aipac.

Bill Clinton did not attend the 2010 conference, per reports. Hillary Clinton did speak at the conference, and gushed over her many friends in the AIPAC leadership, many of them by name, and gushed over Israel too in that speech. And she lamented “daylight between Israel and the United States” over those unhelpful settlements in the West Bank and said the U.S. was moving forward to forge a peace deal to insure Israel’s endurance as a “democratic, Jewish state.”

What hypocrisy, huh? But Democrats are just too dependent on pro-Israel money to walk away from such events.

Seems like a weak attempt to get some young voters on her side……
