Iran deal was ‘the worst diplomatic debacle in American history’ — John Bolton to CUFI

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton gave speeches at the Christians United for Israel summit on Monday where they lauded Israel, condemned Iran, and promised further action from the Trump administration.

Bolton told the crowd in Washington, DC, that “the world is changing for the better and the American people are safer” thanks to Trump’s foreign policy. Bolton also took aim at the United Nations for criticizing Israel in the past and celebrated the administration’s withdrawal from the U.N. Human Rights Council last year. Bolton also took aim at the International Criminal Court (ICC), which he accused of anti-U.S. and anti-Israel bias.

Last June, we announced our withdrawal from the hypocritical Human Rights Council, which shielded the world’s worst human rights violators while devoting most of its time to condemning Israel; a thriving democracy. (Applause) We are also reevaluating U.N. peace-keeping missions, including those involving Israel to ensure support for effective, accountable, and efficient operations. We will not allow bureaucratic inertia to keep the United States in international organizations or agreements that undermine U.S. interests and values. (Applause)

For these reasons, in September of last year I announced that the United States would not fund, support, or cooperate with the International Criminal Court, or ICC (Applause). The ICC, which asserts near-universal jurisdiction over the citizens of every country without their consent. As I said then, the ICC is flawed to its core and we will let it die on its own. Applause) The Court is a favorite child of global governance advocates and it has failed repeatedly in its purported aim to deter and punish egregious human rights violations. Instead the ICC has become a forum for politicized attacks on the foreign policies of liberal democracies such as the United States and Israel.

In fact, in November 2017, the ICC prosecutor [Fatou Bensouda] requested to investigate alleged war crimes supposedly committed by American service members and intelligence professionals during the war in Afghanistan and at the behest of the so-called “state of Palestine”, the ICC has threatened to investigate Israeli housing projects in addition to targeting Israeli counter-terrorism efforts in the West Bank and Gaza. We can not and will not allow the ICC bureaucrats in The Hague to dictate our foreign policy or that of our most trusted allies, first and foremost: Israel. (Applause)

Bolton also praised Trump for leaving the Iran nuclear deal, which he called “the worst diplomatic debacle in American history”, and guaranteed continued U.S. pressure on the country:

I am here to tell you today, President Trump’s maximum pressure campaign against Iran is working. (Applause) A little over a year ago, our critics predicted we couldn’t do it. Our unilateral sanctions, they said, would not be effective. Since then, the United States has levied the toughest ever sanctions on the Iranian regime and Iran’s economy is, to quote the Financial Times, “collapsing under their weight.” (Applause)…

As I said earlier this year in Miami, under this administration no regime that chants “Death to America” or “Death to Israel” will get a deal from this administration. (Loud Applause) We will continue to increase the pressure on the Iranian regime until it abandons its nuclear program and ends its violent activities across the Middle East, including conducting and supporting terrorism around the world.

In addition to criticizing Iran and praising Israel, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo used his speech to condemn the persecution of Christians in the Middle East, defend U.S. evangelicals, and double down on previous statements where he equated anti-Zionism with anti-semitism:

I’m from Kansas, and there are – yeah, I love it, we’ve got Kansans out there.  I’m sure there’s more and you’re just quiet people. (Laughter.) A lot of people get spun up with the wrong ideas that American evangelicals want to impose a theocracy on America.  I wish they would be concerned about the real theocratic takeover that has been happening in Iran for the last four decades. (Applause.) The ayatollahs have grievously deprived the Iranian people of that most basic, simple, fundamental right, their right to worship…..

I wanted to tell this story today for a couple of reasons, because similar threats to the Jewish people have marked other eras as well. Think of the Roman devastation of Jerusalem, the vicious pogroms throughout European history, and the Holocaust.  The Jews have had a target on their back in every era of history. And as the Book of Ecclesiastes says, “There is [indeed] nothing new under the sun.”

But thank God.  Thank God we have a leader in President Trump – an immovable friend of Israel.  (Applause.) His commitment, his commitment – President Trump’s commitment is the strongest in history, and it’s been one of the best parts of my job to turn that commitment into real action.  (Applause.)

You know the stories, but we’ve implemented the strongest pressure campaign in history against the Iranian regime, and we are not done.  (Applause.) We’ve cut off billions in funds that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s leadership would have used for various nefarious purposes, not the least of which would have been their efforts to destroy the state of Israel….

And I think we’ve put the UN on notice, too, that its anti-Israel bias will no longer be tolerated.  (Applause.)

And while I wasn’t there on the day that it happened, I was able to travel now twice to see our embassy, the State Department’s embassy, that was moved to Jerusalem to recognize the simple reality of Jerusalem, Israel’s capital – now and forever.  (Applause.)

The other great thing about this administration is we live in a very real world, and for that reason I was able last March to declare a simple truth, that anti-Zionism is indeed anti-Semitism. Period. Full stop. (Applause.)

The Christians United for Israel summit ends on Tuesday. The Trump administration sent five senior advisors to the two-day conference.

    • Daniel on July 9, 2019, 5:17 pm

Lol. Indeed he is and has been for decades. Can’t believe this idiot is still alllowed to participate in our politics

    • JWalters on July 9, 2019, 6:53 pm

Bolton believes firmly that the Bible is a land deed. No need for diplomacy.

    • echinococcus on July 9, 2019, 7:33 pm

Worst, worst… There’s been just as bad a lot of times. Perhaps also a couple even worse, who are now celebrated by the sheeple because they were more successful than Bolton in committing their crimes. Think about the last administration, who effectively started all these new wars…

But it is of course impossible to tell because each administration has been definitely and consistently a worse criminal against peace than the preceding one. We’ll see the body count and destruction wrought by this one soon enough.

      @edwardm, et al

Reading Pompeo and Bolton’s comments before the [Non] Christians United for Israel, I sense growing panic in the Trump camp. Their grand strategy for Iran (propelled by Netanyahu and the domestic pro-Israel lobby, including huge donations from $billionaire war monger, Zionist fanatic, Sheldon Adelson, and the massive financial influence of accused Jamal Khashoggi murderer, Saudi Arabia’s despicable MSB, who desperately want Iran attacked) is falling apart. Iran is not “rolling over” despite ever increasing U.S. sanctions and threats of war.

To top it off, other than “Israel,” and Saudi Arabia, no country wants a war in the Strait of Hormuz. The consequences would be mass slaughter, involve the entire region and lead to a gigantic increase in the price of oil, which would have huge worldwide long lasting negative economic consequences.

It also seems obvious that despite his bluster and threats, Trump does not want a war. He is acutely aware that as they have made clear, the majority of Americans are utterly opposed to another Iraq slaughter/debacle. It could well cost him the rapidly approaching election.

“Poll Shows Strong Majority of Americans Oppose Attacking Iran.”

I also think that the Trumpites are still in shock at the leaked comments sent to the London home office in accordance with his duties, by Kim Darroch, Britain’s former ambassador to Washington. He just resigned after accurately describing the president and his gang as “inept,” and “dysfunctional.” In short, apart from the ill informed and neo-fascists at home and abroad, thanks to Trump, et al, America’s worldwide image is in the toilet.

In my posting above in which I erroneously refer to Mohammad Bin Salman Al Saud as “MSB,” I meant to write MBS.

JB helped lead the charge into Iraq, the biggest foreign policy blunder ever and an unmitigated war crime!

Other countries prosecute their war criminals. The US and Israel bring them back into government and even promote them to higher office!

It is truly disturbing that hateful and immoral people like war-mongers and supremacist hypocrites Bolton and Pompeo wield power and influence.

Mad Hatter Bolton and March Hare Pompeo at the CUFI Wonderland tea party.
It would be funny, except of course it is not.
The deluded and deranged pair threatening death, suffering, and destruction, acclaimed by CUFI’s loving Christians who wish to see Iran destroyed. CUFI’s loving Christians on the road to their own delusional personal salvation – Armageddon.
Meanwhile Donald the Dormouse nods off, dreaming perhaps of the wonder and glory of his own existence.
    God help us!

These so-called Christians are in NO WAY Christians. They are barbarians in a cult they have been told is “Christian”. They are among the least educated and least intelligent people in the country. They are among the most easily duped, and they have been duped.

→ CUFI’s loving Christians on the road to their own delusional personal salvation – Armageddon.

I’m glad to have them go to their putative hereafter, as long as they don’t destroy the rest of us as they go.

    Frightning!

  5. Kay24 on July 9, 2019, 4:39 pm

Of course it was to Bombing Bolton, Pompeo, and war criminals Netanyahu and Salman. They far prefer to attack Iran, and make it yet another Iraq. The oil would be a bonus too.

Trump, doing their bidding, has destroyed something that was working, and under control, and now we may be on the brink of war, and what do they care if thousands of Iranians are killed?
These people deserve to be hung, like Saddam Hussein was.

  6. just on July 9, 2019, 5:07 pm

Lemmeseeherenow. Hmmm. Bolton has never engaged in anything approaching ‘diplomacy’. Neither has Pompeo nor Abrams, nor for that matter~ Trump. All neocons, except perhaps Trump who has no idea what/how to do anything smart and has surrounded himself with the scumbags of America/Israel and other choice scumbags.

    Found this yesterday:

“Religious Fanatics Have Hijacked America’s Israel Policy. And They’re Not Even Evangelicals

Trump’s extremist, maverick pro-settler envoys, David Friedman and Jason Greenblatt, aren’t resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They’re fueling it – and Congress should investigate …”

    https://www.haaretz.com/us-news/.premium-religious-fanatics-have-hijacked-america-s-israel-policy-they-re-not-evangelicals-1.7455824

You funny, Ori Nir! Congress investigate??? LOL! Nothing new to see here, and Congress will do NOTHING, except silently applaud.

(except Talib and Omar and maybe one or two others who remain silent and Must Not Be Named…)

Why isn’t Congress screaming about the shredding of the JCPOA? Why aren’t they blisteringly angry over the sabre rattling against Iran? Why does the media say that Iran is ‘violating’ the JCPOA when they are being strangled as Trumpco crows about mangling the agreement? It was good and carefully crafted in REAL diplomacy. The hypocrisy that both Israel and the US have nuclear arsenals, but tut- tut and oh, well Iran…

    (Nice one, lonely rico!!!)

  7. gbb on July 10, 2019, 8:39 am

I heard on the stage of democrats running for pres that we need to renegotiate the JCPOA. I think that is tacit approval of “pulling out”.

    • Talkback on July 10, 2019, 11:26 am

The languages is revealing. The US has only “pulled out”. Iran on the other hand is not “pulling out”, but “violating” the treaty, allthough its paragraph 36 allows parties to cease their commitments when other parties “pull out” and reintroduce sanctions contrary to the treaty’s commitments. Gotta love the 24/7 lying brainwashed parrots in US politics and its so called “free media”.

      • just on July 10, 2019, 12:14 pm

Exactly, Talkback!!!!!!!!! It is the US prompted by the neocons, Israel, KSA and the other Gulfies that broke it, violated it, and are waging war against Iran and the Iranian people. I wish to hell that someone would be honest in any MSM. It’s disgraceful and piles more lies upon lies. SOS. Meanwhile, Trump is selling more billions in weapons to KSA, promising them nuclear technology, etc. Hypocrisy that stinks to high heaven.

He supported the Vietnam War ( not actually to the point of fighting for good old America ) until he decided that it was a debacle. He supported the Iraq war and continues to do so in hindsight even though arguably it has become a huge debacle , he supports the US miltary depoyment in Afghanistan even though it is an ongoing debacle.

This man certainly knows a thing or two about debacles ( and creating them ) and he is desperate to create another debacle with a war against Iran.

I expect if it comes to he and Dickhead Donald will be out there (not) in the line of fire as soon as the action kicks off.

  9. James Canning on July 10, 2019, 11:14 am

The abject stupidity of John Bolton in his approach toward dealing with Iran truly is breathtaking. I recommend Ed Luce’s comments in the Financial Times this week, regarding the utter foolishness of Trump’s aggressive posture.

  10. Hussein Hammami on July 10, 2019, 11:41 pm

Those who equate anti Zionism with anti semitism in fact cynically and consciously tap into the genuine sympathy for the victims of anti semitism to hide the crimes committed by Zionist Israel in Palestine. They use the memory of the Holocaust to silence Israel’s critics and provide cover for its ongoing oppression of the Palestinians and its total takeover of their country.
