It’s hard to overstate how incredible the apparent defeat of hawkish Democrat Eliot Engel is.
Albert Memmi, who passed away on May 22 at the age of 99, was the author of that indispensable analysis of the colonial psyche, The Colonizer and the Colonized, and dedicated adherent of that impossible conjunction “left-wing Zionism”. How can one reconcile Memmi’s commitment to Israel with the fact that his work continues to have exceptional explanatory power for our understanding of the Zionist settler colonial state?
“The Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice is intertwined with global justice struggles of other oppressed communities. The COVID-19 crisis demonstrates these intersections and provides an opportunity for global mobilisation in support of racial, Indigenous, social, economic, gender and climate justice” – Apoorva PG, South Asia Coordinator for the BDS National Committee
Trump administration divide over Israeli annexation, between Jared Kushner and David Friedman, will be resolved in “symbolic” acceptance of annexation, first step being Ma’ale Adumim and Gush Etzion bloc, predicts former Israeli ambassador Danny Ayalon.
Ahmed Erekat. Twenty-seven years old, executed on the eve of his sister’s planned wedding, two weeks before his own. He was born, lived, and died, under a brutal, merciless occupation. Israeli snipers shot nearly 8,000 protesters at the Gaza fence, killing 214, including 59 on the day that the US moved the embassy to Jerusalem; and advocates for Israel such as Dennis Ross ignore this river of suffering when they say that “Nothing happened” when we moved the embassy.
Ahmad Erekat, 27, was killed by Israeli forces on Tuesday outside Bethlehem while on his way to celebrate his sister’s wedding. Family and friends are in shock. “It’s tragic,” Dr. Abdallah Abu Hilal, a friend of the family, tells Mondoweiss. “To see the house all decorated, and ready for a wedding. And then to see what was supposed to be the wedding hall, now turned into a wake.”
Jamaal Bowman’s apparent victory over Eliot Engel is not a setback for the Israel lobby–it is a monumental collapse.
