West Bank Dispatch: Repression and resistance continue

Three Israelis were injured as a Palestinian gunman carried out the second shooting operation in the heart of Tel Aviv in less than a year, while three Lions' Den fighters were killed in a failed ambush in Nablus.

  • Second Palestinian shooting on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv since the launching of Operation Break the Wave in February and March of last year. Three Israelis were injured. The Palestinian gunman, Mutaz Khawaja, 23, was from the Palestinian town of Ni’lin in the West Bank.
  • The Palestinian Authority continues escalating repressive measures against Palestinian resistance fighters and political opposition. A funeral procession for the Hamas-affiliated martyr, Abdelfattah Kharrousheh, who was killed in Jenin on March 7 along with five others, was disrupted upon leaving the hospital in Nablus. Several youth were arrested and beaten by PA forces under the pretext of participating in the funeral procession.
  • Palestinian political detainees continue intensifying civil disobedience against abusive Israeli practices and restrictions on Palestinian detainees. 
  • Three Palestinian resistance fighters from the armed group, the Lions’ Den, were killed on Sunday March 12 by the Israeli Golani Brigade, during a failed ambush attempt by the Lions’ Den, according to its official Telegram channel. 
  • While Nablus and Jenin have been the focus of targeted Israeli executions and assault, this week there has been an increase in incursions into Hebron and Jericho. 
  • Palestinian unions in the West Bank — namely teachers’ and lawyers’ unions — continue protests against the Palestinian Authority’s refusal to provide a salary increase, in addition to a number of other demands for labor rights amidst a widening financial crisis.
  • American Secretary of Defense, Austin Lloyd, visits Israeli security heads and affirms the “enduring and ironclad” relationship between the US and Israel amid escalating Israeli violence in the West Bank.
