Video: I’m Bisan, and I’m still surviving the genocide

Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda reflects on three years of genocide in Gaza, a life lost forever, and her unending work to tell the truth.

Hi, this is Bisan. After three years, when I think about the genocide, I immediately think about time distortion. How time is not the same for Palestinians in Gaza as it is for the rest of the world.

We are stuck in 2023. It feels like we are still there. At the same time, anything that happened before 2023, or before October 2023, is in the past – a place we can’t go, a person we can’t see, a life that is gone forever.

Everything that happened before 2023 is something like a dream that we struggle to wake up from. Something that we can never restore. It’s as if Gazans are stuck, and the entire world is moving forward.

Maybe the most horrific thing that happened to the Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, is that they were deprived of their basic human rights: the right to grieve, to feel sad.

We have millions of losses. Millions of losses. Each one of us has lost at least one thing. And are yet to lose. Unfortunately, greater losses are around the corner, staring at us, waiting for us. So we don’t have time to grieve.

This genocide is bigger than the world, not only us. The world faces a huge struggle to comprehend all of this together. And I spend my day, to be able to deal with this feeling of helplessness and loss, trying to help my people, trying to write, or to make some social media videos and films to help the true narrative and the voices of the people who lost everything, to reach the world.

I want nothing but the truth. Owning this truth is so powerful. I don’t need anything except the truth. No lies, no scenarios, no fake news, but the truth. The truth is enough to give us back our land, our life, our everything. To rebuild our Gaza. This is how i’m dealing with it, this is how I’m working to stop to genocide.

Yet despite all of this, I don’t find running away, ceasing to try, or basically surrendering, as an option. Because what is happening is far beyond me. It’s not about me as an individual. It’s the right of an entire people, it’s the price of a land, not a bag of candy. So all I can do is gather my strength and fight for my people’s liberation.

So this is my message on the third anniversary of the ongoing genocide. We all need to use our strength to liberate all our peoples. That’s it.
