The United Church of Christ resolution abandoning the two-state solution and calling Israel’s continued “oppression” of Palestinians a “sin” that demands action by people of faith has alarmed the American Jewish Committee and for good reason: Other Protestant churches are sure to follow, with measures that pose a real threat to apartheid.

David Harris of the American Jewish Committee declares war on young Jews who have joined allegedly “antisemitic”, anti-Zionist organizations so as to overcome social isolation and “are willing to throw millions of other Jews under the bus.”

U.S. Jews and not Christian Zionists are Israel’s “bridge” to the Congress and the White House, Israeli minister Nachman Shai tells the American Jewish Committee. “I believe only in you.” And that means shutting down the “Squad” in Congress. “I don’t want to hear those voices coming from the Democratic Party sidelines of refusal to send arms to Israel or to support Israel internationally.” P.S. Israel lobbyist David Harris, who couldn’t explain why young Jews are turning against Israel, is finally leaving the American Jewish Committee. And Rabbi Michael Miller is leaving the JCRC because he knows he’s out of touch with the progressive movement in Jewish life.

Liberal Zionist groups ran away from a rally in DC equating criticism of Israel with antisemitism– as even an organizer admits that Israel is just too “divisive” an issue in the Jewish community these days. The event had a rightwing religious feeling. The Washington Post said “hundreds” attended the affair.

Several articles by Israel supporters bewail a “surge in anti-Zionism” among Jews because of the latest Gaza attack. They want to remind American Jews of their Jewish identity: that Being Jewish means supporting Israel. That’s an important argument to have.

The very political Human Rights Watch report finding that Israel commits the crime of “apartheid” is a response to recent events in Israel: passage of the racist Nation State law in 2018 and rightwing leaders dismissal of the idea of a Palestinian state. The report regretfully informs liberal westerners that there will not be a Palestinian state, and the state that does exist in the land is not a “Jewish democracy.” That news is the report’s largest political lesson.

There are horrifying images from Jerusalem last night of a mob of racist Jews saying the city belongs to them and Arabs should burn. The young American Jewish group “IfNotNow” labeled the mob a “pogrom,” in another assertion of moral leadership over community elders who ignore the violence.
