British filmmaker Ken Loach is compelled to withdraw from an anti-racism charity event because pro-Israel activists target him for his support of BDS. The price for keeping Loach would be “to wreck not only the competition and Ken Loach’s reputation, but the charity’s very existence,” his supporters said.
Microsoft has announced that its divesting its shareholding in the Israeli facial recognition company AnyVision. The move follows an audit which was forced by a BDS campaign targeting the company. “Microsoft’s decision to heed the calls of the campaign to drop the Israeli surveillance company AnyVision is a huge and timely BDS victory,” announced the the Palestinian BDS National Committee.
Rabbi Noah Zvi Farkas tells AIPAC that Zionists have to tell progressives about their need for Israel because of Jewish “vulnerability” and “trauma” from “thousands of years on the margins of society” in order to get them to stop “preaching BDS.” And it’s working, he says.
“As surely as Israel relies on the extraordinary young people in the IDF [Israeli Defense Forces], it relies on you for steadfast support and success,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer tells thousands of American college students at the AIPAC policy conference, describing their “mission” to fight BDS on campuses.
A newly-formed student group at Harvard University is demanding that the school reveal its financial ties to the Israeli occupation of Palestine and divest from it entirely.
As NY Mayor, Mike Bloomberg said BDS supporters want Israel to be “torn apart.” But he said trying to suppress BDS advocates’ free speech rights would help the movement. “If [you] just shut up, it would have gone away! It would be a bunch of kids on a campus. Nobody would have gone to listen to them and nobody [would have] seen it. Now they’ve created the very monster that they say they’re opposed to.”
The DSA Palestine Solidarity Working Group says the Democratic Socialists of America must recommit to its work affirming BDS strategies in support of Palestinian liberation.
The BDS campaign rejects Zionism, a settler-colonial ideology that demands a Jewish-supremacist state in Palestine, not Judaism or Jews. Unable to refute this distinction, Israel supporters are determined to erase it altogether through a sweeping set of laws, resolutions, and related measures that treat criticism of Israel as bigotry.
