Har Bracha is a Jewish settlement outpost that regularly terrorizes the Palestinian village of Burin, whose lands it stole. President Isaac Herzog, who is routinely celebrated by liberals in the U.S., toured the settlement Tuesday and declared that the Jewish people’s connection to that land cannot be “denied or diminished.” So much for all the liberal Zionist talk of a two-state solution that would yield land to Palestinians.
U.S. Jews and not Christian Zionists are Israel’s “bridge” to the Congress and the White House, Israeli minister Nachman Shai tells the American Jewish Committee. “I believe only in you.” And that means shutting down the “Squad” in Congress. “I don’t want to hear those voices coming from the Democratic Party sidelines of refusal to send arms to Israel or to support Israel internationally.” P.S. Shai is a J Street hero.
Ben & Jerry’s historic decision not to sell in occupied territories, and the fragile, response from Israeli leaders and their American enablers shows: The long-anticipated “tsunami” of international delegitimization of Israel has begun. And the dream of an Israeli F.W. De Klerk– the politician who leads the country away from apartheid — is a fantasy.
Yair Lapid, hero of liberal Zionists in the U.S., explains why his government sought a law barring Palestinian families unification in Israel. “There’s no need to hide from the purpose of the law. It’s one of the tools meant to secure a Jewish majority in Israel. Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people.” And leftwing Zionist party Meretz went along with the racist bill. Though Palestinian members of Knesset overwhelmingly opposed it.
Liberal Zionist Rabbi Jill Jacobs says that American Jews who give up on the two-state solution have abdicated a “moral and spiritual imperative.” The journey to the two-state solution is like the journey from Egypt to the promised land in the bible, with lots of setbacks and no shortcuts. “Instead of sinking into despair let’s reconnect with the moral and spiritual imperative before us.”
Randi Weingarten, labor leader and liberal Zionist, is not condemning some locals’ backing for BDS. This is yet another sign that support for Israel is cracking among U.S. progressives. Joe Biden and Naftali Bennett want to keep Israel a bipartisan cause, but political forces here are against them.
Several articles by Israel supporters bewail a “surge in anti-Zionism” among Jews because of the latest Gaza attack. They want to remind American Jews of their Jewish identity: that Being Jewish means supporting Israel. That’s an important argument to have.
“Palestinians, under occupation for decades, are fighting for their homes and demanding freedom,” Kelly Cobiella says on NBC, in a sign that Israel’s new government will not be able to reverse the disaffection for its practices in the U.S. “New government — same apartheid,” says the young Jewish group IfNotNow.
Liberal Zionists are celebrating Israel’s new rightwing prime minister, Naftali Bennett. Why? Although many secular Zionist leftists may not see him as “Our guy”, they may still identify with him on his militarism and the startup ideology, and this may be enough to sanitize him for them, as a pragmatic partner whom they can emotionally accept.
Liberal Zionists are secretly exultant over Naftali Bennett unseating Benjamin Netanyahu, hoping it will end the politicization of Israel in U.S. politics. But Apartheid is a hard sell and Bennett will quickly be on a collision course with a lot of people in the United States who think Palestinians should have rights.
