Obama’s ‘Yes We Can’ Video as Forever Cultural Landmark

Are you as bowled over as I am by the hiphop and Hollywood mashup (I hope I’m using that word right) of an Obama speech with a song called "Yes We Can"? Obama feels truly oceanic to me. Something is happening out there and we don’t know what it is and middle aged stiffs like myself have to hold on and just nod our heads in wonder. I have the same unmoored feeling about society that we had as kids in the late 60s, when we listened to Dylan singing Times They Are a-Changin’. Of course Gene McCarthy stubbed out and Robert Kennedy was killed in California then, still great things were born, from racial inclusion to women’s and gay rights; and youth seems now to be demanding a similar change in the order of everything. All our  hideous classifications are about to go out the window, race and class and the geography of us and them, including in the end the good-for-the-Jews stuff I grew up with and that has been rationalized and bolted down by endless militarism… Oceanic.
