Nakba Plays in London, How Long Before It Hits Broadway?

Today’s Independent in England features an opinion piece on the Nakba that uses the word "sh-t" three times in describing the repulsive practice of Israeli colonies, pumping their raw sewage on to Palestinian land. Then Johann Hari brings the Nakba home:

The people who ask angrily why the Palestinians keep longing for
their old land should imagine an English version of this story. How
would we react if the 30m stateless, persecuted Kurds in the world sent
armies and settlers into this country to seize everything in England
below Leeds, and swiftly established a free Kurdistan from which we
were expelled? Wouldn’t we long forever for our children to return to
Cornwall and Devon and London? Would it take us only 40 years to
compromise and offer to settle for just 22 per cent of what we had? If
we are not going to be endlessly banging our heads against history, the
Middle East needs to excavate 1948, and seek a solution.

The question Americans must ask is, Why isn’t this conversation happening in our  mainstream press? Why isn’t Ghada Karmi being quoted after her visit last week? (As my friend Dan Swanson points out) why is it that when a pro-Palestinian piece appears in the U.S. press, it is almost always by a Palestinian–as if the discourse must signal to readers, Well of course, they would say that, their ox was gored!  When as Hari shows, this is a universal issue, any liberal has a right to be offended. Noah Schwartz, a Columbia student, last year made a similar analogy to Hari’s London analogy and called for the "excavation" of 1948.

“You live in Philadelphia, and all of a sudden 1
million Chinese move to the place. Speaking a different
language. You wouldn’t like it… The issue of 1948– that’s the main
argument we have here. You couldn’t have a Jewish state without the
displacement of another people. The idea of a distinct people in a vacuum may
work for Antarctica. But the standard history,
and it is not disputed, is that transfer arrangements were [discussed by]… the Jewish
Agency, once the civil war broke out after Partition….” When do we get to read Op-Eds from Noah Schwartz?

    "Hitler Killed My Father
He wouldn't talk about the years he spent in Nazi concentration camps. But they never left him."

"I am approaching another anniversary of my father's death. It will be more than a dozen years since he passed away. I still don't agree with the cause of death on the certificate. The cause of death, according to the doctor, was cancer(DID PAPA SMOKE?). That was not what killed my father. The cause of death was Adolf Hitler. My father was a Holocaust survivor. He lived and breathed being a Holocaust survivor. It defined him."

mental illness that bores deep and infects generation after generation.

Hari writes: "Two years ago, the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research conducted the first study of the Palestinian Diaspora's desires. They found that only 10 per cent – around 300,000 people – want to return to Israel proper. Israel can accept that many (and compensate the rest) without even enduring much pain."

In a normal democratic country, this would be true. But from the zionist perspective, every single Israeli Arab is a "ticking demographic time bomb." Admitting 300,000 Palestinian returnees could mean 3 million more Israeli Arabs a century from now.

Zionism is the rock on which all peace negotiations founder, because Zionism insists upon an ethnically-pure state with an unassailable Jewish supermajority. Debasing language by adopting euphemistic propaganda such as "Israel's right to exist," which conceals the Zionist agenda of ethnic purity, distorts public opinion such that the real impediments to peace can't be diagnosed. Even Hadi doesn't get to this point.

You can have Zionism, or you can have peace, but you can't have both. The deviant ideology of Zionism, which was erected on a foundation of lies, has got to be repudiated. Herzl was a deluded false prophet, who led his people into the wilderness to perish. But Israel named a mountain after him. A century from now, I guarantee you, that mountain will bear a Palestinian name.

how does one return to a land destroyed? evrthing is ugly. the water, the air, the land poisoned. walls, walls, walls. ugly highways that have destroyed the land. ugly homes.

without non jews as the melieu, the environment in which jews exist as a minority whose power is in proper relation to its size, is this what jews do to life?

looking at palestine and usa and iraq, the answer is yes.

Yah right Haygood, Zionism is evil and everything was just hunky dory up until 1948. The fact is that there has always been genocidal anti-semites such has your self and there always will be.

  6. hlmeankin says:

Good to have you back Sword.
However you need to rethink the proposition:
"the Holocaust was a creation of antisemites"
Unless you just want to be circular in argument, but then that's meaningless.
It was much more complicated. Recall that Eichmann and Heydrich were originally philosemites, holding the Hebrew culture in very high esteem. Things turn into their opposites. And recall that without the services of IBM and their card sorting machines, the National Socialists would have had a much harder time figuring out where the Jews lived. Thank IBM's Watson for supplying them with the technology.
And the American and European eugenicists who applauded Hitler when he started gassing the disabled in the early years, and EVEN the capitalist system, which requires unemployent to survive, may have played a role, because unemployent was used as a political reason to deny Jews refuge in the West..
Finally, serious Holocaust historians point out that the Nazis looked at the antisemites in Germany as a joke..they considered themselves much different, being "professionals"…

  7. "sh-t"? jesus, phil, grow. up.

I won't wait, I shall check here occasionally to see if you have any actual reportage, like the gillerman transcript, but basically your writing is girlish, gosh-golly gossip, and it slimes everybody, even the people it claims to be supporting.
