Sarandon Sees ‘Both Sides’ in Israel’s Illegal Colonization of West Bank

by Philip Weiss on July 17, 2008 · 11 comments

Inter Press has this account of the Jewish/Palestinian campaign to get lefty actress Susan Sarandon to come out against Lev Leviev, the diamond merchant and colonizer whose Madison Ave store she has regrettably patronized.

A representative for Sarandon told IPS that the award-winning actress, known for her embrace of progressive causes, is not a spokesperson for any jewelry company nor is she an expert on this matter. “She has read information from various sources about both sides of the issue,” wrote her representative in an email. “Beyond this Ms. Sarandon does not feel qualified to make any further comment.”

Sadmaking.

Sarandon is a coward. She didn't even have the courage to speak for herself. What qualifications does a person need to know right from wrong?

Diamonds are forever.

Good thing zionism's not.

I think that she is courageous in her honesty.

Rather than passively parrot what others are asking that she state, she is honestly saying "I don't know".

Yes, Susan has said she doesn't know, but she knows who has the power.

You might hold out a little thought for the possibility that behind the scenes there's more pressure, and more dangerous coercive pressure, than shows up in the vapid two-dimensional media screen we're calling reality these days. One example is usually good for some time on vulnerable populations, say the public humiliation, hands-off no direct connection, of someone in a similar spot. Followed by actual damage. People tighten up. One of the aspects of that is you don't go running to the press screaming "OMG the bad people have threatened to wreck my life!"
It's of the nature of manipulation and extortive coercion to seek invisibility.
Sarandon may be just one more shallow thespian, or she may be juggling pressures we're not seeing.
Invisible pressure is what this whole discussion is about.

Invisible? LOL

Some of the pressure to conform "might" be coming from those on the left that are dogmatic, and mean about it.

She might have her convictions, but not yours.

The bitch-whore Sarandon has no problem trashing the US govt, whitey, or pro-lifers, but she is gun shy about Israel.

Since she has lost her looks and wishes to mantain her film career, she will not make a stand for the Palestinians.

Bashing Geo Bush earns one a medal in Hollywood. Bashing Israeli Aparthied assures a ruined career. Speilberg and Harvey Weinstein would crush the once beautiful starlet.

'I think that she is courageous in her honesty.'

A bit like you, eh? Fearlessly eschewing the decent thing. I'd say her reasons differ slightly from yours though. Or John Malkovich's. Unless she a 'landswoman'.

'Some of the pressure to conform "might" be coming from those on the left that are dogmatic, and mean about it'

She IS the left you fool. She is now the emblematic limousine liberal, choosing very carefully from an a la carte menu of causes, which has just one notable absence.

It's got absolutely nothing to do with politics anyway. It's about courage – not even that really, just a commitment to the truth. Sarandon is happy to bask in the benefits of a desirable career, with a side-serving of 'activism', which she knows must stay within certain boundaries to ensure the career stays on track.

She is a cowardly hypocrite.
