that this fine story in the LA Times about the growing fears of a civil war inside Israel over the diehard "settlements" is written by a man named Ashraf Khalil, who I'm assuming has some Arab background (yet is able to visit a settlement and report on attitudes)? It says that We are a more evolved country than Israel, it says that Jews who have the great good fortune of living in this country must try and extend their understanding about minority freedom to the Israelis rather than running the clueless blind Israel lobby and signing off on the oppression of Palestinians. Also: Khalil's story begins with a bris. I visited a settlement, Eli, 2 years back for the Observer to go to the shiva ceremony for an officer killed in Lebanon. When you spill blood in the Occupied Territories and call it home, that's a powerful connection, when you bury your dead there, a powerful connection. How soon before we Americans must help Israelis begin to imagine, and then body, a one-state solution?
I gather from Dan Sisken that Khalil is an Arab-American.

"How soon before we Americans must help Israelis begin to imagine, and then body, a one-state solution?"
The Jews don't want a one state solution. The Arabs don't want a one state solution. But Phil does. I think he's delusional.

Maybe American Jews should just mind their own business, and quit trying to shape the lives of other people, wherever they may be. And it isn't like American Jews haven't largely supported Israel good or bad.
Michael, there is a slight contradiction between, "the Jews don't want" and the truism "three Jews, four opinions". Don't you think? You should decide.
Increasingly, Michael W, the Arabs are in fact supporting a one-state solution. There has always been a notable support for it among some Palestinians, but I can report personally as finding the idea more and more popular in the West Bank where I have had occasion to visit on a nearly yearly basis over the past 10 years. It's difficult to quantify, I grant you that, but the failure of the Oslo process and the expansion of settlements has led many Palestinians I know – again, at least in the West Bank – to begin to think that the only possible solution (rather than the desirable one) is a single state or a kind of confederation. I used to be a two-state supporter myself, but now I find any talk of a two-state solution more unrealistic than that of a single state. All it takes is a bit of traveling around the West Bank to see how unfeasible a two-state solution is, now. So I think Phil's actually far from delusional, he's saying what needs to be said.
That "three Jews, four opinions," is just some bigots idea of a joke. Jews (a category that excludes Philip Weiss) are pretty unified about not wanting a single binational state.

Weiss: "It says that We are a more evolved country than Israel"
Are we really? How "evolved" can any county that allows a tenacious minority representing another nation's interests to take the reins of power through subterfuge and money and use it to start wars, rob and exploit its own citizens, and general plunder the US…how "evolved" can that nation possibly be? We are actually devolving, and were more evolved back when the country had some incredulity about organized Jewry.
Weiss, I know (a few) of you liberals mean well, but the more you push multiculturalism, the stronger the Judeofascists will continue to get. What this country really needs is a good old fashioned Christian revival (kryptonite to the Judeofascist) to get its mind straight again, not more politically correct multiculturalism, which is the trojan horse that the Judeofascists have been riding for decades to deliver themselves into the seats of power.
@LeaNder,
I was talking about Israeli Jews. Phil is not an Israeli. I won't go as far to say that Phil isn't a Jew either.
For West Bank Arabs to say that they want a one state solution is a bit hypocritical. Why would they want to join a state whom they believe is run by "Nazis" (as they call us)? Israel is holding all the cards. Asking Israel to either give up being Jewish, or give up bring democratic (which I'm sure the Arabs don't want that to happen) is ridiculous. The only thing that they can ask for is the West Bank. Israel already let go of Gaza which means that Israel is firmly footed in the idea of staying a Jewish and democratic state.
@Ed,
"What this country really needs is a good old fashioned Christian revival"
You are traitor to the values of this country – democracy and religious freedom. Here's a letter from President George Washington to America's earliest Jewish community:

"How soon before we Americans must help Israelis begin to imagine, and then body, a one-state solution."..???????? he ask.
We can't "help" the Israelis..they are too far gone.
It is the 'help' we have given them for 60 years that has contributed to what they now are.
All we can do is try and rouse Americans to demand our government stop them.
That won't happen of course but no matter….it will end anyway because the US is ending…as in broke, bankrupt, busted.
It ought to be evident to all that congress had not the foggiest idea what they are doing regarding the economy..has never had the foggiest idea and will never have the foggiest idea how to get the US out of the hole they have put us in.
When the US hits bottom Israel will get
flushed and it's gonna be a mad, mad world…a free for all.
All those non government actors out there know how to survive, navigate and even thrive in that kind of world…the US doesn't and without the US there is no Israel.
Start stashing your money kiddies, you are headed for a third world society and a lot of unrest to put it lightly.
American,
You're right, but in addition to stashing the cash (or gold), you should also circle the wagons (live with/near extended family), arm yourselves, and store food.
Interesting articles lately inform us that:
US gun sales are up 50% since Obama's election: I see this more as a coincidence that people are realizing that the economy really is melting down, and society will be destabilized in the next two years. It's not really a reaction to Obama's election.
The Chinese are lecturing Hank Paulson of Goldman Sachs South (Treasury Dept.) about fixing the US economy: Well, I'm glad someone is lecturing the flip-flopping idiot. Nobody in the US, save Ron Paul, has been tough enough on the architects of this meltdown. I'll be happy when common Americans start calling for the blood of these bankers. The Americans as a whole need to be lectured – Save some money, you idiots! Take off the blinders!! You've been lied to and brainwashed for too long!! The strategy of Paulson, the FED, and Washington is a joke. Let's pressure the Chinese to let the Remnimbi appreciate – in other words, let's try to deflect any criticism of our macroeconomic policies onto the Chinese, the evil bastards. They actually save money!! I've yet to hear an apology from Paulson, Ben Shalom Bernanke, Greenspan, or any of the CEOs of the big Wall Street banks. I've also yet to see the bank bailouts come with the kind of strings attached that we see in the auto industry bailout.
We need some patriots who are willing to refresh the tree of liberty with blood. I hope the tyrants' blood poured on that tree includes a copious amount from the bankers, and the patriots' blood is kept to a minimum.
PM
All in favor of starting with Paul's blood say "kill the fat fuck"!
Another "jew" who thinks he speaks for all of the world's jews.
I should say another fanatic.
What a waste of humanity….
Israel already let go of Gaza which means that Israel is firmly footed in the idea of staying a Jewish and democratic state.
The Israeli sociologist (I think) Nathan Sznaider in an article published in a German newspaper, which I remember so well since I vividly remember my strong resistance to read it–I stopped and started a couple of times, till I finally overcame my resistance–wrote:
Israel wants to be both democratic and Jewish, but it can't be both. He added that Israels insistence to remain both endangers the Jewish diaspora.

While checking a how he spells: Natan or Nathan? I found the exchange below on the German anti-defamation forum. Somebody writes Sznaider made him ponder. He made me ponder against heavy resistance.
I use Google translation modifying a bit.
Radio interview with Nathan Sznaider
Last Sunday SWR2 had a detailed interview with Nathan Sznaider, professor of sociology at the Academic College in Tel Aviv.
You can add it by following this link to hear: [ no you can't anymore] but there is a picture of Sznaider…
RE: Radio interview with Nathan Sznaider
I found the interview very interesting, particularly because he spoke about issues, I hadn't thought about a lot.
He talked about the mood in Israel after their respective victories against the Arab attackers, why there were no Israel 68ers youth movement, the self-understanding of the Israeli peace movement, Israel – a member of the EU? or why Turkey is a member* of the EU and Israel will not?; the self-understanding and vision on Israel by a young Jew growing up in Germany who immigrated to Israel. (1974)
* Turkey is no member yet. It is in a process towards membership though against heavy resistance in right wing circles.
wrong paranthesis: [ no you can't anymore] but there is a picture of Sznaider…] my insert.
Gone kids, thanks to Bill Pearlman for a smile today.
