The Zionist movement was originated by Ashkenazi Jews as a European Jewish nationalist movement that looked down on Eastern Jews as a lower form of humanity. Eastern Jews were brought to Israel using a number of sometimes not-so-nice methods (Iraq is a particularly vivid example of particularly nasty methods of inducing emigration). Jews from Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia, etc., many of whom had been part of the intellectual, professional, cultural, and economic elite, were induced to emigrate and transported to Israel only to be treated like dirt. On entry to Israel they were subjected to numerous humiliations, including being deloused as soon as they left the airplanes. On intake, those who had Arabic names had their names changed to "more acceptable" names. Doctors, lawyers, scientists, university professors, artists, and businessmen were put into primitive camps and given the most menial jobs. Only the Palestinians (aka "Arabs") who had survived the ethnic cleansing and remained in Israel had lower status than they did.
