Check out this illustrative news story from Mississippi, 1963 Tel Aviv, today. The great Israeli blogs Promised Land and Dimi’s Notes report that the Tel Aviv suburb of Petah Tikva has established a patrol unit to break up dates between Palestinians and Jews. Dimi Reider explains and provides a translation of a Yediot Ahronot article on the program:

What follows is a translation of the relevant excerpt from a local Yediot Ahronot paper. “Minority men” is a depressingly transparent euphemism for Arabs, and I tried to preserve the stale and clumsy language of the original:

The decision comes after a relationship was discovered between a girl from the city and minority men from Jaljulya who murdered Arik Karp last month on a Tel Aviv beach.
“The problem of minority men is well-known,” said the chief of the youth department, Moshe Spektor. “Our attempts to deal with this problem are real and sincere. The municipality is making an effort to examine the matter in cooperation with the police.”
Noam Sheizaf adds:
No city in Israel, not even Petah Tikva, has ever “dealt with the problems” of girls dating Russians or Ethiopians, even as there were numerous crimes committed by members of these ethnic groups. Yes, it’s back to the oldest allegation in the racist’s handbook: “they are taking away our girls!”
Both blogs point out that this anti-miscegenation program is just the flip side of the anti-assimilation program conducted by the Israel Agency and Masa. This is all coming from the country that we are supposed our core values with. Any questions now why the love affair is over?

This is a very powerful story and let us hope that it gains traction inside the US. Tel Aviv is in the news this week and this should also be part of the news.
There is another thing given that Tel Aviv is in the news should be publicized. This is not news, more like olds, but is something that Americans are quite unaware. This is the fact that over 90% of the real estate in Tel Aviv is covered with convenants that prohibit Palestinians from buying, leasing or renting property. The convenants are attached to property that was purchased by the Jewish National Fund (which started buying land in Israel begining in about 1910). I have tried to research this issue using the internet without obtaining a very clear picture. But I am convinced that these convenants are still in effect. It seems to me that so many Jews in this country were not allowed to buy homes in many of the better suberbs around the larger East Coast cities because of real estate convenants and that they were deeply insulted by this fact (especially those that came of age after WWII) that they and their descendents would be deeply offended if they were to become aware that these similar convenants are directed against Arabs today in Tel Aviv neighborhoods. To properly document these practices would require someone familiar with Israeli real estate law and its history. This is a research project that should be pursued by someone with the right background. Of course, the atrocities are small compared to what is happening in E Jerusalem and the West Bank, but it is something that I believe many American Jews would find very troubling especially since they have been told over and over again that Israeli Arabs have equal rights with Israeli Jews. (Again, these are people that realize there is something wrong happening on the West Bank but that is something that will be resolved in future negotiation — these are people that are totally oblivious to the fact of the extreme discrimination experienced by the ‘legal’ Arabs inside the Green line). This is a story that should be documented today.

I am not quite sure what “moral compass” means though I suspect that what you say is incorrect. There are amoral people. They are significantly different than Witty.
I have been poking around a bit looking at Kohlberg’s Stages of Morality. (see link to mit.edu for example). These seem to me to make sense. I know that there are other people who have come up with slightly different ways of looking at the same problem. From my naive view point it probably makes little difference as to which system I look at. Rather it is the idea behind the system.
We start off life effectively amoral. As we grow older our “world” grows and starts to include more and more people – and our moral ideas become more and more “universal” in nature.
Covenants based on racial or ethnic exclusion running with the land are unenforceable and a crime in the USA, and have been for many decades.
Yes, Israel is different. It’s lack of basic constitutional rights equally applicable to all
citizens and its network of discriminatory laws, rules, and policies de jure and de facto
are much more akin to apartheid South Africa than to USA law and policy. Rascist thug encounters happen every day in the USA outside of wealthy gated suburbs–I’ve had such experiences with rascist thugs over the years, including with black thugs, Mexicans, and “white trash.”

I think that the effectiveness of the special anti-miscegenation patrols would be greatly increased if all minority men were obliged to wear large yellow crescents prominently sawn onto their clothes every time they ventured into public spaces. Small print in the ID cards that identifies Jews as opposed to “minorities” is just so inconvenient. There is a pleasing Teutonic efficiency to this idea, n’est-ce pas?

That reminds me of something. Several years ago I happened upon an Israeli blog with photos of Israeli’s dressed in costumes for the Purim holiday. One photo was of three people on a street (in Tel Aviv, I believe) dressed in immaculate, hooded KKK robes/costumes (and “mugging” for the camera). If I recall correctly, these robes appeared to have the official KKK insignia on them.
