Israel lobbyist to become Israel lobbyist

Miami Herald:

U.S. House of Representatives member Robert Wexler of Boca Raton, a self-described “fire-breathing liberal,” defender of Israel and friend of both President Barack Obama and Gov. Charlie Crist, is quitting Congress to head a think tank seeking peace in the Middle East.

In a conference call Tuesday night with Democratic leaders, Wexler said he will become director of the Washington-based Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation. Wexler, 48, is expected to make a public statement about his plans at a 10 a.m. Wednesday press conference at his Boca Raton office.

The Center is funded by Slim Fast billionaire, and Israel-devotee, Daniel Abraham. Today Abraham welcomed Wexler aboard.

  1. You have contempt for that effort?

  2. They say when you’re applying for a job you should act like you’re in that job already. Wexler has been applying for his new job his entire life.

  3. US_Objector says:

Yes! We desperately need more Israel-first, former American politicians focused on convincing the U.S. Congress that Israel is our best friend and only ally in the Middle East. Let’s double our US taxpayer contribution to Israel to $6 billion a year in celebration of this momentus occasion.

    • MRW says:

$3 billion is the outright cash called foreign aid and given to them in euros, but the total is $15 billion/year in earmarks and loans and military aid.

      • Citizen says:

Could that be the leverage that could be applied in the interests of the USA that
Mister Witty inquired about so recently on another thread on this blog? He wanted to know what leverage people were talking about in the context of Obama’s failure to
act after making his Cairo Speech.

  4. Nolan says:

I’m surprised Chucky (Israel sent Gazans text messages telling them to evacuate before it bombed them) Schumer isn’t joining Wexler.

Perhaps there’s more money to be had when you’re representing New York.

  5. US_Objector says:

Nolan: Israel sent Gazans text messages telling them to evacuate before it bombed them.

Right. The most moral army in the world Twittered the Palestinians a few minutes before raining white phosphorous on their children. And I’m so sure that all Palestinians have Blackberrys to receive those text messages.

  6. DG says:

The Haaretz background piece on funder Abraham says that in his hobnobbing with foreign leaders on behalf of peace, he always “spoke of himself as an Israeli.”

But as American taxpayers, we’re going to be subsidizing this 501-c front.

    • Citizen says:

How can you explain that to the average American–you know the same ones who
don’t know the Census does not distinguish between citizens and illegal aliens, so
that the states with the most illegals get that many more seats in congress, while
those with the least illegals get that much less representation?

  7. VR says:

    On the Abraham article –

“He knows there is no peace without an agreed-upon border, and doesn’t understand Israelis who think that they’re more secure without a border than with one.”

Gimme a fucking break! How much more are we going to have to listen to this nonsense? If they want to do these things than move to Israel.

    • Citizen says:

Why should they when the only way they can renounce dual citizenship living here
is to formally renounce USA citizenship to the proper US government official? Why kill the boyish dream of living in Scarsdale or Fort Lauderdale and growing up to join the IDF?

  8. Colin Murray says:

    Phil, that’s a great headline.

SEE: “Diet King Denies Slim Fast Bribes”, By MARCUS BARAM, 05/16/08

(excerpts) The probe into Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s finances has all the ingredients — alleged, of course — of a classic Hollywood political thriller…former New York limousine driver Avi Sherman told Israeli TV that he delivered suspected bribes, including bundles of money tucked into cases of Slim Fast diet products and cash in envelopes, to Olmert. He claimed they were given to him by S. Daniel Abraham, the founder of the diet-food empire.
Abraham, a billionaire and longtime Democratic fundraiser, strongly denied the allegations, telling Army Radio, “Of course I never gave any money to Ehud Olmert. The very question is insulting to me. This is my reputation at risk and I have no reason to risk it.”…
