‘Green Zone’ or the banality of ethnic cleansing in Jerusalem

From the film description on Vimeo: "Green Zone – is a 20 minute long documentary, exploring Israel’s discriminatory policies in occupied East Jerusalem. Since 1967 urban planning has been used by the Israeli establishment as a tool to contain the growth of the Palestinian population in the mixed city. The impact of these policies has been catastrophic for many Palestinian residents, resulting in an average of 100 house demolitions every year."

People need to see these things to understand why the Palestinians are taking the stance they are, refusing to acquiesce to the Israeli theft of their capitol and the eviction of their people.

And Americans in particular need to be made aware that they are funding these activities with tax exemptions. A good article by Akiva Eldar in Ha’aretz points this out, quoting Phil Weiss and this site. link to haaretz.com

Zionism isn’t racism and apartheid, huh?

  3. this is not new, it is just hasbaraed out of awareness of United Statesians who support Israeli intentional ethnic-cleansing-by-architecture.

Eyal Weizman described this strategy in 2007 in Hollow Land: Israel’s Architecture of Occupation:

A groundbreaking exposé of Israel’s terrifying reconceptualization of geopolitics in the Occupied Territories and beyond.

Hollow Land is a groundbreaking exploration of the political space created by Israel’s colonial occupation. In this journey from the deep subterranean spaces of the West Bank and Gaza to their militarized airspace, Weizman unravels Israel’s mechanisms of control and its transformation of the Occupied Territories into a theoretically constructed artifice, in which natural and built features function as the weapons and ammunition with which the conflict is waged. Weizman traces the development of these ideas, from the influence of archaeology on urban planning, Ariel Sharon’s reconceptualization of military defense during the 1973 war, through the planning and architecture of the settlements, to contemporary Israeli discourse and practice of urban warfare. In exploring Israel’s methods to transform the landscape itself into a tool of total domination and control, Hollow Land lays bare the political system at the heart of this complex and terrifying project of late-modern colonial occupation.

I’ve posted this same quote and same comment before and I’ll post it again and again, as persistently as I can to counter the zionist persistence in attempting to hasbara zionism’s way out of an egregiously immoral plan for creating a nation.

If zionism is so moral, why is hasbara necessary? Why does Israel have to lie about itself?

    • Citizen says:

That’s not a question that would occur to Zionists. Try reviewing Bernays contribution to our USA culture, or his avid student’s, Goebbels, to German culture.
If still in doubt, ask Dick Witty. After he responds, check out what he says with the fonts of Bernays and Goebbels. I bet they will be very similar.

This is why, despite its best efforts, Israel can never be called an outpost of Western civilisation.

Does anyone else see the parallels between the Israeli treatment of Palestinians, and Robert Mugabe’s treatment of white farmers?

    • Citizen says:

“Mr Tsvangirai is in a quandary. In a speech this week, he promised to stand by the (white) farmers. Yet he has blown hot and cold on the issue since he became prime minister. At first he said that not a single crime against white farmers would go unpunished, though no prosecutions have ever been brought. He has also claimed that the issue has been “blown out of proportion” by the press. In any event, Western donors have so far been firm.
Unless farm invasions stop—and the likes of Messrs Campbell and Freeth are treated fairly—development aid will not resume.
      Out with those white famers:

How many Americans know about this on-going situation? Even less than those who know about the Palestinian ordeal?

      Why is that?
We all know about David Duke et al. And Duke has no power. We have government agencies dedicated to anti-semitism. We have a black congressional caucus. We have the ADL, the Southern Poverty Center. What does this discrepancy in news coverage mean? Do you feel your government is being fair and balanced? Does it represent you, and the values you hold?

      • Citizen says:

And, further, RE: “Unless farm invasions stop—and the likes of Messrs Campbell and Freeth are treated fairly—development aid will not resume.”

Is Obama calling for an end to, or at least a suspension of, unlimited and unconditional funding of Israel? Why the disparity? Isn’t the USA 98% non-Jewish?

        • just got a maddening email blast from Brit Tzedek.
This Jewish organization is concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the suffering of the Palestinian people, and the low regard in the international community to which Israel continues to descend.

So what does Brit Tzedek propose as a solution to these problems? “Tell Obama to solve this mess.”

          Whiskey
          Tango
          Foxtrot?

          Did Obama cause this mess?

How ’bout Brit Tzedek tell its coreligionists/co-people-ists, like weasely Matthew Levitt who used a free, internationally broadcast microphone on CSpan to spout racist garbage demonizing Islam and Iran, to stop his zenophobic and lying warmongering?
How’bout stopping the propaganda and hasbara that’s coming from your side, Brit Tzedek.

        • Chaos4700 says:

Obama can’t even tie his metaphorical shoelaces without turning to Rahm Emmanuel. I think Brit Tzedek is just copping out and trying to say “well, we tried!” without actually trying anything they know would be effective.

        • potsherd says:

Yes, Obama certainly helped cause this mess. What is Brit Tzedek doing to pressure him to stop pandering to AIPAC and Netanyahu?

    • Chaos4700 says:

Well, I think the treatment of native South Africans by the descendants of Dutch colonists is a much more apt analogy — I’m not conversant enough in the history of Zimbabwe to know how much colonialism was involved in those farms ending up in the hands of people who weren’t native Africans. That said, discrimination purely on ethnic and religious lines is always wrong, whether the victims are white, Arab, African, etc.

      • MRW says:

If you saw the hunger that Mugabe has visited upon the majority of black folk in Zimbabwe, you would weep. Horrible, gut-wrenching hunger. I watched women I thought were pregnant and in their 40s but, instead, were barely out of their teens walking in slow-motion, delirious, barely blinking into South Africa looking for food, their stomachs distended. Children walking with no more capacity for tears, their stomachs ready to burst from no food. The men were stealing the copper wire from telephone lines in S.A. to sell for food. Mugabe is starving his people to an extent that you cannot begin to imagine. Children eat dirt to survive, literally.

Mugabe gave the beautiful verdant farms to his friends, who have no idea and no interest in working the former spectacular breadbasket of Africa. They dont understand agriculture, wine-making, or distribution of farm goods, and dont care to; they only cared to get the white farmers off the land, and the thousands upon thousands of black lives these farms supported were meaningless to them. Hundreds of thousands of hectares, formerly beautiful farms — it was Rhodesia after all — are overgrown and now unworkable. Mugabe and his friends live off the foreign aid he gets, and they spend it in lavish style; they fly imported food and alcohol into Harare for themselves alone. Careen around the country in air-conditioned Mercedes’ with drivers. A year ago, Zimbabwe’s monthly inflation rate was 79,600,000,000%. The Cato Institute said the daily inflation rate was 98%, and it took 24 hours for the prices to double.

This is why, despite its best efforts, Israel can never be called an outpost of Western civilisation.

I’m afraid it can. That’s why Western civilization enjoys the level of respect it does in the rest of the world.
      Western civilization in a nutshell:
      “Whatever happens,
      we have got
      the Maxim gun cluster bomb
      and they have not.”

      • “Whatever happens,
        we have got
        the -Maxim gun- cluster bomb
        and they have not.”

        Barbara Slavin’s words, almost exactly:

        link to c-span.org

“Israel is the United States’ ally, Iran is not. If Iran wants to be a friend to the US, it should do what US wants.” (paraphrase)

(Not to mention that Israel has US by the short hairs through singular control of Pentagon and national intelligence budgets and plans; its dominance of US media, not excluding NPR and even C Span; dominance of US financial systems; dominance in numerous federal bureaucracies; unfettered access to the personal financial transactions and telecommunications transmissions of American; access to the federal banking system’s credit window, control of the US legislature, dominance of numerous states’ legislatures, ….)

notice at the end of the clip — at about 29 min — how the C Span moderator cuts off an Iranian who respectfully and rationally disagrees with Slavin’s and Israel’s position on Iran.

the message to Iran from Israel er Slavin er Israel is exactly what the Iranian-American interlocuter declared: Israel does not want Iran to have a seat at the United Statesian table. Slavin stamped that declaration as forcefully as if it were a papal bull.

      • potsherd says:

And this nutshell holds the reason why Israel is so hysterical about the prospect of Iran getting its own Maxim guns.

      • syvanen says:

It is unfortunately an outpost of western civilization. When Ghandi was asked what he thought of Western Civilization his reply was ‘I think it is a good idea’.

    • Chaos4700 says:

It’s what US politicians from the two big political parties chasing campaign dollars stand for. I wouldn’t say the US itself stands for that — but who’s to say the US itself even exists anymore, effectively? The more I look at it, the more it seems to me that 9/11 really was a fatal blow to the United States, because we willingly sacrificed what it means to be an American in a blind panic.

I mean, you even look at countries that were complicit in our war mongering, like Great Britain — there’s even talk now of prosecuting Tony Blair as a war criminal. Over here, the war criminals still get nightly time slots on cable news shows to evangelize.

      • Citizen says:

Yes, you are right, the modern (more abstract in verbiage) Julius Streichers of the media have continued in power from Shrub to Obama. And Blair and Shrub and all those propagandists should be tried and hung just like Streicher. Abuse of free speech to the severe detriment of living humans. Can you help torture them all before they are hung?

        • Chaos4700 says:

I’m not a fan of capital or corporeal punishment in any case, even mass murder. But that said, I’d have to agree with you. And as we’ve seen Obama is a complete idiot for giving shelter to the torturers and war mongers — did he think they’d be grateful? Of course not — not when there’s political capital to be extracted.

    • Has Obama made a Devil’s Bargain with Israel?

      d’ya think?

Where have you been since at least Oct 2008, Rachel Marshall, when Jews in US and in Israel demanded oaths of fealty from Obama (HRC had already sold her soul to Haim Saban in exchange for the senate seat in NY)?
