Ethan Bronner writing on Iran, quotes a top Israeli official:
“For the Americans, Iran is a strategic threat. For us, it’s an existential one.”
Any journalist who pays any attention knows that Israeli leaders, including Barak and Livni, have repeatedly made clear, speaking in more serious conversations, that even a nuclear-armed Iran is not an existential threat to Israel, but rather a strategic challenge because it alters the regional balance of power… This existential threat business is what they use to scare the Americans, and their own electorate, although as Aluf Benn often warns, that could be a disaster. For Bibi, having told Israelis that it’s 1938 and Iran is Nazi Germany, may feel compelled to act on that basis.

Well – Israeli Hasbara Committee are trained to act like idiots without any shame. First of all the Zionist regime is an illegal occupation of a foreign land and as per all international laws, the Natives have the right to fight against the occupation and all the countries in that region are expected to support the Natives.
Secondly, Israel in its 62-year of existence has invaded each and every neighboring country while Iran has not attack even one of its neighbors for over 100 years.
Thirdly, Israel has a stockpile of Nuclear bombs against Iran’s non-existant nukes.
Fourth – It may take Iran to develop a ‘delivery mechanism’ to read the US – while Israel already have such mechanism.
YES – Islamic Iran may poses a threat to the Zionist entity – if it become the 51st. State of USA.

Bronner quotes Ehud Barak: “From a closer distance, in Israel, it looks like a tipping point of the whole regional order” and goes on to say: “In other words, as a top Israeli official put it afterward: “For the Americans, Iran is a strategic threat. For us, it’s an existential one.””
PW says : “Any journalist who pays any attention knows that Israeli leaders, including Barak and Livni, have repeatedly made clear, speaking in more serious conversations, that even a nuclear-armed Iran is not an existential threat to Israel, but rather a strategic challenge because it alters the regional balance of power…”.
Bronner is apparently quoting an opportunistic ” top Israeli official”. We don’t know who Bronner is quoting (at the bitter end of this long article) but it would be helpful to know that a FM and PM have disagreed in public. Sources, Phil?
I think Phil had said once that he has a good Jewish Israeli Journalist friend in West Jerusalem who has access to certain information. Phil prefers not to divulge additional information, so I don’t think you will not get much in the sense of a direct answer on this issue.
Israel ‘s nuuclear arsenal alone could completely and utterly destroy all of Iran – and most of the Middle East with it.
Even if Iran got the bomb, the likelihood of them using it to attack Israel is zero since they know that retaliation from both Israel and the US would be instantaneous. The same, unfortunately, cannot be said of the likelihood of Israel using their nuclear weapons against Iran.
Israel’s claim of Iran being an existential threat stems from the deliberately misinterpreted words of Iran’s President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that the Zionist regime would eventually be wiped from the ‘pages of time’. The contextual reference appears to be–look how the USSR collapsed (not Russia). The right-wing Zionist-supporting neoconservative-controlled organisation Institute MEMRI) was responsible for the deliberate misinterpretation of Ahmadinejad’s words to read ‘wipe Israel off the map’. MEMRI successfully pushed its interpretation to the western media who then picked it up and ran with it throughout most of the MSM. Since then the quote, or rather misquote, has been at the core of the US and Israel’s propaganda against Iran. The US and Israel utilise the misquote together with Iran’s quest to produce nuclear energy for electricity generation in a relentless propaganda bid to demonise Iran by claiming that Iran has a secret nuclear weapons program that will enable Iran to build a bomb with which to carry out what Israel claims is Iran’s threat to physically destroy Israel.
In other words, pure propaganda Bernays and Goebbels would be proud of, not to mention Father Coughlin. BTW, here is a list of Hasbara Committee’s authors–see how many you recognize, including the press organizations, governmental agencies–here’s just a couple, Bob Dylan, Kissinger, US State Dept, Krauthammer, AP, Brit foreign secretary David Miliband:

If ‘existential threat’ = ‘likelihood of unprovoked nukes’ then it exists no more than do dodos.
But in a more significant sense a change in the strategic balance does amount to an existential threat because it would force Israel to negotiate seriously with the Palestinians, thus ending the ‘live without a solution’ situation on which Israel’s existence as a political entity embodying Zionist ideas does indeed depend.
Where do American news anchors get their geography education?! Mr Matthews was saying something like
Excuse me, since when is the West Bank across the river Jordan? This is a joke.
