Goldstone report is Banquo’s ghost of international law conference

The American Society of International Law is featuring just one Goldstone panel during a conference filled with discussion of "International Law in a Time of Change," a clear reference to the Goldstone effect. Goldstone’s sure to come up, even in State Department official Anne Marie Slaughter’s appearance at the lead lecture, on changing standards. Here’s the key panel, in the morning, so folks sleep through it…

How can anyone offer a divergent opinion on the collective punishment and deliberate targeting of 1.5 million civilians?

It’s akin to offering divergent opinions on a driveby shooting that results in the death of dozens of innocent bystanders.

As long as the panels at these things are composed of neocons and Zionists, the opinions never diverge at all from the path of exceptionalism.

Realistically, the Goldstone report is simply another in a long line of indictments that have not resulted in criminal prosecutions. In 2000, the UN Commission on Human Rights reported “widespread, systematic and gross violations of human rights perpetrated by the Israeli occupying Power, in particular mass killings and collective punishments, such as demolition of houses and closure of the Palestinian territories, measures which constitute war crimes, flagrant violations of international humanitarian law and crimes against humanity.” See E/CN.4/RES/S-5/1
