‘Haaretz’ says Obama caved because Netanyahu applied ‘hidden pressure’ in Chicago

Writing about how Netanyahu fought back and gained the upper hand of Obama, Ari Shavit writes in Haaretz:

After 18 wasted months during which Obama was the president who exerted pressure, he has become the president who embraces. Obama is embracing the State of Israel and the prime minister of Israel. What happened?

Three things have happened. On one level, Netanyahu waged a struggle. And the statesman who is depicted as susceptible to pressure did not succumb to the American pressure of this past spring. He fought back. The price for what Netanyahu did was felt by Obama in Chicago. The Israeli leader applied hidden pressure to the American leader, which made it perfectly clear to him: No more...

Now what is meant by the reference to Chicago? (It can't be just a slip.) Of course ALL this kind of pressure is "hidden"; doesn't Shavit imply what he's talking about was a move more hidden than most? Will American journalists report on this? Does it involve Pritzkers and Crowns, the big money that launched Obama, or Lee Rosenberg of AIPAC, an early backer? Rahm?

Obama has lost a great deal of ground. What would he have lost if he would have stayed firm. Brought up the illegal settlements again. Continued to demand a freeze. Obama is losing us

Penny P is a key behind Obama:

PS, I use to date a Pritzker girl when I lived in Chicago.

  3. tommy says:

Actually, it was the president who applied Guckert pressure on Netanyahu’s hidden jewels.

  4. Keith says:

If Obama is under a personal services contract to Penny Pritzker, that would tend to explain his behavior.

How is this any different than what I have been posting all this time? Gimme a break

  6. lysias says:

I wonder what an honest investigation of Gov. Blagojevich’s attempt to sell Obama’s Senate seat might reveal about Obama and people close to him, like Rahm Emanuel and Valerie Jarrett.

  7. Les says:

The “hidden power” supposedly submitted to, is a phantom that can only become real if and when one submits to it.

And here’s how BYahoo responds to Obama’s ask-kissing:

When asked whether the freeze on settlement construction was likely to be extended, he avoided a clear answer. As in previous cases where he has been asked about this issue in recent weeks, his response could be interpreted as an intention either to build or to freeze.

“I did the temporary freeze as an incentive for the Palestinians to enter direct talks,” Netanyahu said. “Now, seven months into the freeze, the Palestinians have not entered direct talks, and they already want to extend it. The right thing to do is to enter talks. We have shown good will … I think we have done enough, let us move onto direct talks.”

Wait, I thought the pro-Israeli lobby wasn’t really all that powerful? My worldview!

  10. It’s not just the Israeli lobby Aipac, although they donate millions to the election process, the Jewish people also run most of the TV networks, as well as the major newspapers. Whether or not you agree with what Helen Thomas said, according to our 1st Amendment she had the right to voice her opinion. You didn’t see any reporter questioning Gibbs when he said she should apologize, and that came from Obama. Neither did you see any of the press corp come to her defense. Yet, we have the three stooges Limbaugh, Beck and Pat Robertson who make disgusting remarks about the Muslim world on their radio and TV shows, and not a wimper comes from the White House. Can you name any other country that has received 118+ billion dollars from the US in foreign aid gifts? Just listen to the parroting from our members of Congress and our members of the Administration if you don’t think the Israeli lobby is powerful. Israel can even kill US citizens with impunity, as in the USS Liberty, Rachel Corrie, and the most recent death of the 19 year old aboard the flotilla. See if you can find any report on an investigation into his death.. I am sure Obama assured BiBi that it was ok during their last meeting.

    • lysias says:

Limbaugh continues to be broadcast to our troops overseas over Armed Forces Radio.

With my own ears, I heard Limbaugh defend in the spring of 2004 the torture at Abu Ghraib. And that was in the first hour of his show, the hour broadcast over Armed Forces Radio.

Funny how Republican Party usage of the “corrupt Chicago politician” meme has died down after it has come to light that the trail leads straight away through the Israeli lobby.

  12. Noone has an accurate clue that Obama “caved”.

midnightschild, I think you should watch the forgotten Rachels, that Philip Weiss and the radicals on here wont tell you about.

    • Keith says:

KENDAVIS- The Israeli Rachels are indeed tragic. Since the Arab suicide bombings and rocket attacks came long after both the Nakba and the 1967 invasion of more Arab lands, and since Israel continues to spurn peace initiatives in favor of Israeli Hegemony, I share your outrage at the Zionist elites who put their ambition ahead of the welfare of the Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel. Shame on Bibi, et al, and shame on the American Zionists who support and enable this despicable behavior!

  14. KenDavis says:

midnightschild, did you protest on here when England freed the Lockerbie bomber for an oil deal with Libya.
Oh i forgot, the Arab Oil Lobby is something you dont want to talk about.

    • Keith says:

KENDAVIS- The Libyan who was freed was wrongly convicted in a travesty of a trial in which his “accomplice” was set free in protest. The perpetrators were a terrorist group hired by Iran in retaliation for the intentional shooting down of an Iranian airliner by the USS Vincennes, whose crew received medals for this “accident.” This is what the original investigation showed, however, the US needed Iranian support for Gulf War I, so changed course in mid stream and blamed Libya. The man won an appeal and there was to be a new trial which could have proved embarrassing, hence, his release. This has been covered extensively by William Blum and others. link to killinghope.org

  15. KenDavis says:

Sumud, the Arab governments who perpetuate the incitement of Muslims against Jews, with conspiracy theories that Jews are secretly behind every incident that negatively affects them. This is a pitiful self-serving attempt to deflect blame from their pathetic societies.

  16. Hi Ken, I am well aware that their have been unjustifiable killings on both the Israeli and Palestinians sides, however, you have to agree the death count is a little lopsided. I was referring to the deaths of Americans that our government never bothered to investigate. I am aware that all “Americans killed by the Israeli’s” were “accidents” if one believes the news reports we get, as well as what the Israeli government says. You may want to read some accounts of those who were with Rachel when she was run over, just to get another perspective. As for the oil lobby, what exactly are they going to do, with hold oil from us, remember who has the nukes….
