‘Tennis in Nablus,’ Khalidi play about 1939 Palestine, is staged in Hudson

Ismail Khalidi’s play Tennis in Nablus is being staged in Hudson, NY, for the next two weeks. From the Stageworks site:

In the brilliant new play, TENNIS IN NABLUS, two nations buckle under conflicting claims to the land they believe is rightfully theirs . . . and as the world explodes absurdly around them, one divided family must face their own demons as they seek to achieve peace and freedom with dignity.

From Michael Ratner:

Tennis in Nablus is a remarkable theatre experience.

I laughed. I cried. And discovered a lot about the Palestinian revolt of 1936-39. That revolt is more than just history; it’s a template for the struggles today in Palestine and Israel. Should Palestinians trust the British? Should they negotiate or fight? There is a Zionist who wants the two peoples to live together. He is of good will, tries to separate himself from those who want to scatter the Palestinians to the four corners of the earth. But can he prevail? Khalidi shows British imperialism at its worst and most cold hearted. The foot soldiers pressed into service from Ireland and India are different. Khalidi created two great comedic characters who allow us to laugh despite the unfolding tragedy for the Palestinian people. Don’t miss this play.
