In ‘Time,’ Cantor joins himself at the hip with Netanyahu in defiance of Obama

Eric Cantor
Eric Cantor

Rep. Eric Cantor, the Jewish pro-Israel Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives,  wrote this essay for Benjamin Netanyahu on the occasion of his inclusion in the Time 100 most influential people list for 2012.  Calling Netanyahu "the right leader for Israel",  Cantor devoted half his essay to supporting the Israeli Prime Minister's dangerous and aggressive position on Iran.

At the moment when the Obama administration is beginning negotiations with Tehran under the cloud of Israeli criticism and threats of military action, Cantor's statement that Netanyahu is the "right partner for America" shows whose interests he's prioritizing.

Israel has had its share of transformational leaders who are comfortable on the world's stage, dealing with their nation's often oversize challenges. Benjamin Netanyahu is one of these iconic Israelis, a strong, determined leader who has excelled during a lifetime of service to the state of Israel. Bibi's accomplishments and service as a soldier, a diplomat, an economic reformer who took on the difficult and politically perilous task of challenging the status quo, and a two-time Prime Minister rank him among the world's great leaders.

Now, at a time of tremendous international instability and growing danger, Prime Minister Netanyahu, 62, has provided a compelling and reasoned exposition of one of the gravest threats facing the world today. He deserves credit for drawing attention to the threat Iran poses to Israel, to America, to the region, to its own people and to the free world. Confronting Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons and sponsorship of terrorism is an urgent task for all of us. At this perilous moment, Prime Minister Netanyahu is the right leader for Israel — and the right partner for America.

  1. Abierno says:

And when Netanyahu unilaterally bombs Iran, spreads radioactive debris throughout the middle east and drags the US into yet another middle eastern war
to placate Israel’s existential fears (while devestating the US economy), we can truly call it Eric Cantor’s War, an event in which according to these accolades, he would take great pride.

    • dimadok says:

If we are doing the “If” scenarios-may I call the moment when Iran makes a first nuclear test, “Abierno Moment”? Just asking.

      • Shingo says:

If we are doing the “If” scenarios-may I call the moment when Iran makes a first nuclear test, “Abierno Moment”?

The difference being of course that Israel has repeatedly threatene to bomb Iran, while Iran has rejected the very idea of nukes.

  2. Israel first medal of dishonor for Cantor.

  3. Woody Tanaka says:

“Cantor joins himself at the hip with Netanyahu”

The essay makes clear that the only things that are joined are Cantor’s lips and Netanyahu’s ass.

  4. Dan Crowther says:

Barack Obama wouldn’t say the same thing about Bibi in public? puh-leeze. This is the OFFICIAL position of the United States – as repugnant as Cantor is, he’s very much in the mainstream of “official” opinion, regardless of the anonymous rumblings passed along to us by some sympathetic journos….. Another thing – all the “how dare you take sides against the president when it comes to foreign policy” shit was just as stupid when W. and co were doing it.

The worst phrase ever is “politics stops at the waters edge” – nonsense. Whatever else is true about Cantor and the Republicans, they arent going to cower from the office of the president, unlike their democratic colleagues – if anything, we should be praising Cantor for keepin it real – at least the guy is consistent.

  5. seafoid says:

Bibi sure is transformational alright. And when the full force of the transformation hits the Israelis of the future they’ll wish June 4th 1967 never happened.

    • Sumud says:

      Indeed. I call 1967 Israel’s ‘Great Gamble’.

They were so successful in stealing half of the Palestinian Partition in 1948/9 they thought they could grab the other half in 1967, and no-one would notice or care. With typical zio-supremacist supremacism they vastly underestimated Palestinian’s steadfastness, and didn’t seem to realise the stakes were all or nothing.

      • seafoid says:

Yes. They really messed it up in 1967.

The colonisation of Palestine was different to the colonisation of the US in several key respects – the Palestinians were one people, they don’t tend to drink alcohol, they belong to a strong wider community and the Ziobots didn’t bring any deadly diseases with them.

  6. Chu says:

How tiring to hear this congressional US house whip, spiel
    about his middle east fuhrer.
I don’ think Israel will manage next next to suck the US into
an escalating war with Iran. No politician is willing to go for
another shot at a war when we are zero for 2 in successive
failed missions. No Israeli or US Zionist politician can
make a successful case for it, especially based on the global economy today.

And Cantor has a likability problem as well. His agenda is as transparent as Joe Lieberman and Co.

  7. What a creep, craven and seditious, crawling to his paymasters.

  8. radii says:

fealty to israel over their own country – for shame, U.S. congresspeople – a disgusting legacy going back decades

  9. pabelmont says:

Cantor: “Now, at a time of tremendous international instability and growing danger, Prime Minister Netanyahu, 62, has provided a compelling and reasoned exposition of one of the gravest threats facing the world today.”

Yes. This IS a time of instability etc, DUE TO Mr. Bibi, who has INDEED provided a compelling exposition of the grave threat — namely, his own persistent threats (contrary to UN Charter) to start a new unprovoked war-of-aggression started by Israel.

Thanks a whole lot, Mr. Cantor, sir.

    • seafoid says:

When Bibi turns vegetable like Sharon will Israel still be around ? Imagine he goes into a homenear West Jerusalem for the elderly suffering from Alzheimers and is there for a few years deteriorating but one day he has a flash of clarity and he goes to the reception to find that the country no longer exists and is now called “the Holy Land of Palestine FKA Israel”. And then he gets it before lasping back into the fuzz.

AS MAYHEM IS FOND OF SAYING: “Birds of a feather…”
AS I WOULD SAY: Betarim birds of a feather…”

    FROM WIKIPEDIA [Betar]:

(excerpt) The Betar Movement (בית”ר, also spelled Beitar) is a Revisionist Zionist youth movement founded in 1923 in Riga, Latvia, by Vladimir (Ze’ev) Jabotinsky. Betar has been traditionally linked to the original Herut and then Likud political parties of Israel, and was closely affiliated with the pre-Israel Revisionist Zionist splinter group Irgun Zevai Leumi. It was one of many movements and youth groups arising at that time out of a worldwide emergence of fascism.[1] Some of the most prominent politicians of Israel were Betarim in their youth, most notably Prime Ministers Yitzhak Shamir and Menachem Begin, the latter of whom idolized Jabotinsky.[2]…
. . . The group initially praised Mussolini for his anti-communism and fascist principles, leading it to adopt the black uniform shirt of Italian fascism for a short period. Mussolini’s invasion of Abyssinia, however, was seen as “cowardly” by Betar and led them to break with him shortly after.[8]…

(excerpt)…Mussolini set up squadrons of the Revisionist Zionist youth movement, Betar, in black shirts in emulation of his own Fascist bands.
When Menachem Begin became chief of Betar, he preferred the brown shirts of the Hitler gangs, a uniform Begin and Betar members wore to all meetings and rallies – at which they greeted each other and opened and closed meetings with the fascist salute. . .

    • P.P.S. ALSO SEE: “Bibi and the Yo-Yos”, by Uri Avnery, Antiwar.com, 05/26/11:
(excerpt) It was all rather disgusting.
There they were, the members of the highest legislative bodies of the world’s only superpower, flying up and down like so many yo-yos, applauding wildly, every few minutes or seconds, the most outrageous lies and distortions of Binyamin Netanyahu.

It was worse than the Syrian parliament during a speech by Bashar Assad, where anyone not applauding could find himself in prison. Or Stalin’s Supreme Soviet, when showing less than sufficient respect could have meant death.
What the American Senators and Congressmen feared was a fate worse than death. Anyone remaining seated or not applauding wildly enough could have been caught on camera – and that amounts to political suicide. It was enough for one single congressman to rise and applaud, and all the others had to follow suit. Who would dare not to?
The sight of these hundreds of parliamentarians jumping up and clapping their hands, again and again and again and again, with the Leader graciously acknowledging with a movement of his hand, was reminiscent of other regimes. Only this time it was not the local dictator who compelled this adulation, but a foreign one.
The most depressing part of it was that there was not a single lawmaker – Republican or Democrat – who dared to resist. When I was a 9 year old boy in Germany, I dared to leave my right arm hanging by my side when all my schoolmates raised theirs in the Nazi salute and sang Hitler’s anthem. Is there no one in Washington DC who has that simple courage? Is it really Washington IOT – Israel Occupied Territory – as the anti-Semites assert? . . .

“The Iron Man”, by Uri Avnery, Counterpunch, 4/19/12

(excerpt) “In blood and sweat / A race will arise to us / Proud and generous and brutal…”
Thus wrote Vladimir (Ze’ev) Jabotinsky, the founder of extreme right-wing Zionism
, who was also a writer and a poet. Present-day Likud leaders see him as their forefather, much as Stalin saw Karl Marx.
The world “brutal” stands out, because it seems implausible that Jabotinsky really meant it. His Hebrew was not very good, and he probably meant something like “hard” or “tough”.
If Jabotinsky saw today’s Likud, he would shudder. His was a 19th century mixture of extreme nationalism, liberalism and humanism.
Paradoxically, brutality is the only one of the three traits that is prominent in our life today, especially in the occupied Palestinian territories. There is nothing there to be proud of, and generosity is something associated with the despised leftists.
THE ROUTINE, everyday brutality that governs the occupied territories was caught on video this week. A searing flash in the darkness. . .

Here’s an interesting story about why Cantor helped defeat Rep. Don Manzullo . Link to: link to thinkprogress.org.

Apparently Manzullo once said Cantor would not be “saved” because he is Jewish. This pissed off Cantor and he gave $25,000 to Manzullo’s opponent because he thought this comment was antisemitic. This is crazy. It is part of Christian Zionism that the Jews will not be saved if they do not convert. Joe Lieberman addresses those same nuts every year and praise them for their support of Israel. Does this mean that Cantor lost the party line? Does this mean that there is a split developing between the Jewish and Christian Zionist? Let us hope so.
