Eight hours on Third Avenue

Yesterday a spirited group of New Yorkers—from the city and also from upstate—sang, chanted, walked, leafleted, and passed out emblematic Palestinian food in front of the offices of Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) for eight hours.

Hundreds of people participated during the day, which started at 11 a.m. and concluded at 7 p.m. to the strains of “We Shall Overcome” performed by the Rude Mechanical Orchestra.

_ERD1570Co-sponsored by Jews Say No! and Jewish Voice for Peace/NY, with the endorsement of over 25 groups, the demonstrators demanded that the senators actually enforce a law they had voted for—and apply it to Israel.  Commonly called “the Leahy Law,” the measure instructs the Defense Department to withhold funds from countries whose military units violate human rights.

_ERD1583During the day young members of JVP staged a hilarious mock press conference where Sen. Schumer’s supposed press officer “announced” that the senator had renounced his blind loyalty to Israel and had embraced the cause of Palestinian liberation. More photos here_ERD1660

Love it! More, more!

Well done, if I may say that as one who thinks that 48 and the Nakba, not 67 and the Occupation, is the continuing problem. Was there any reaction, sympathy or opposition?

Simply beautiful. I love the song, the Palestinian food offerings, the signs, the smiles everywhere– the entire action!

Thank you people of conscience NY!
