UN head says Gazans ‘caged in a toxic slum from birth to death’ as human rights council votes to investigate Israel

The United Nations hightest human rights group voted Friday in Geneva to investigate Israel for human rights violations in “the military assaults on the large-scale civilian protests that began on 30 March 2018” in the Gaza Strip, after convening a special session.

The the United Nations Human Right Council (UNHRC) passed the resolution with 29 votes in favor and 14 abstentions. The U.S. and Australia alone voted against it.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley criticized the council after the meeting, defending Israel for engaging in “legitimate defense of its own border against terrorist attacks.”

“It is another shameful day for human rights,” Haley said.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Aviva Raz Shechter lambasted the decision, stating while “Israel deeply regrets any civilian loss of life,” the responsibility for the death of demonstrators who were shot by Israeli forces “can only be attributed to Hamas’s cynical exploitation of its own population, in a violent campaign against Israel.”

“Israel unilaterally disengage from Gaza in summer 2005. There is no occupation in Gaza. It is a myth,” she said, referring to the protest on Monday as a “riot.”

Shechter mocked the notion that Palestinians were hosting a “peaceful protests”.

“By supporting the convening of this session they unwisely embolden the Hamas terror organization. There is nothing peaceful in Molotov cocktails, explosive devices and meat-cleavers,” Shechter said, adding criticism for the Ramallah based Palestinian Authority. In 2007 the Palestinian Authority and Hamas divided their governments between the West Bank and Gaza, although there has been numerous failed attempts at reconciliation in recent years.

Shechter accused the Palestinian Authority of “willingly taking part in the implementation of Hamas’s strategy,” which was outlined as to “Blame Israel. Complain to the UN.”

Traditionally UNHRC considers independent inquires into human rights violations only after a member nation has exhausted a domestic investigation.

“This unnecessary resolution should have been avoided, because of the credibility of Israel’s robust investigative mechanisms, and its steadfast respect of IHL [International Humanitarian Law],” Shechter said.

After the vote, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said over social media, “the Human Rights Council again proved that it is a hypocritical and biased body that aims to harm Israel and to back up terror.”

On Thursday Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman called to “immediately” pull out of the UN rights group, “Israel is under double attack. A terrorist attack from Gaza and a hypocrisy attack headed by the UN Human Rights Council.”

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the United Nations human rights head, endorsed the resolution to investigate. “The stark contrast in casualties on both sides is also suggestive of a wholly disproportionate response,” continuing, “on the Israeli side, one soldier was reportedly wounded, slightly, by a stone.”

Al Hussein told the council Israel is failing to meet it’s obligation under international law to protect Palestinians in Gaza. “They are, in essence, caged in a toxic slum from birth to death; deprived of dignity; de-humanized by the Israeli authorities to such a point it appears officials do not even consider that these men and women have a right, as well as every reason, to protest,” he said.

“Israel and its defenders have given the impression that Palestine occupies Israel. How long will this joke continue?” said the Palestinian rep to the UN Ibrahim Khraishi, “We have said we want peace and the world agrees with us that there should be a two-state solution. But Israel refuses that.”

Will the US and Israel try to sabotage this investigation? Chances are high they will, and succeed it doing so. It was disgusting to see this woman from the New York Times, Bari Weiss, on the Bill Maher show, blame it all on Hamas, and say it was they who sent women and children to die like that. Not one negative word about the zionists, the occupation, and the land theft, and she even stated it was not about Jerusalem. There was no empathy for the Palestinians at all, and for the lives lost. She did not criticize Israel for using live ammunition on civilians, nor did she criticize them for killing these poor people as they simply walked and prayed, and no immediate threat to the well armed and trained IDF. The NYT sure has a few staunch zionists as journalists, who are so biased, so pro Israel, they don’t bother to hide it.

Of course, the Head of Human Rights will be attacked, because he is a Muslim, but then apologists should realize that the US has always protected, supported, and armed them, and this time too Israel will get away with brutally, and violently, killing civilians.

Currently there is a Resolution being put through the Security Council which Israel and America are attempting to block. It involves placing a multi national force in Gaza to protect the people from shhootings and aerial bombardment. America will veto it and so it is expected to be put through the General Assembly like the investigation one was. Exciting times. It apparently has majority support.

What good is majority support if any party has a veto? And on what basis is that veto power still conferred on a nation that is avowedly anti-UN and takes any opportunity to trash it? It’s an understatement to call the UNSC system dysfunctional, and if anything it operates as scaffolding for the imperialist aggression it ought to be checking. More to the point, simply creating another opportunity to tut-tut the Americans for throwing their weight around doesn’t help the Palestinians one bit.

Kuwait has circulated a draft resolution at the UN Security Council condemning Israel’s actions and calling for the deployment of an international force to protect civilians. Kuwait is urging the Security Council to condemn Israel’s use of force against Palestinian civilians “in the strongest terms”, especially in the Gaza Strip.

It seems Harper is just as corrupt and totally biased, just like Trump and the GOP. Adelson must have financed his political career too. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley criticized the council after the meeting, defending Israel for engaging in “legitimate defense of its own border against terrorist attacks.”

“It is another shameful day for human rights,” Haley said.

Clearly Ms. Haley has been thoroughly stripped of her identity as a woman of color and former member of a minority religious faith persecuted in her homeland. It would seem she got the Stepford Wive’s treatment somewhere in her life and has been completely scrubbed clean of her humanity and empathy.

Every single day the zionist state is allowed to continue their present course is not only a shameful day for human rights, but a shameful day for humanity as a whole.

    Matthew 23:13-28
13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.”

Fathi’s family and associates emphasized that he does not suffer from mental illness, but noting he was distraught over his brother’s injury in one of the “March of Return” demonstrations at the border with Israel, which are organized and promoted by Hamas.

i find it a tad strange they are not quoting the individual, family (or associates), or witnesses, in the article other than “Eye witnesses saw the man dousing himself in flammable liquid shouting “damn the government””. for example, claiming the great march of return was “organized and promoted by Hamas”. everything in the article is ‘israel said’ or ‘lieberman said’ alluding to the idea the man agreed with the israeli government. all we know is he set himself on fire and, according to his family he was distraught his brother was hurt and you can hear the yelling in the video. if he’s shouting “damn the government” maybe he means the government who shot his brother .. israel. try harder jack.

Hamas has to be held accountable for much that goes on in Gaza, but it is so obvious that the occupier has sent it’s Hasbara, and journalists, who feel unwavering support for Israel, to keep the anti Hamas narrative going in the media, and websites, just after they massacred 60 civilians, and injured thousands. The need to win the propaganda war at this time, when the world is condemning their crimes.

On Bill Maher’s show, a well known zionist supporter, and journalist in the New York Times, Bari Weiss, blamed the massacre on Hamas, whining that they sent women and children to die. She failed to mention that perhaps they were desperate, and fed up of the occupation, and the zionists stealing their lands. Had this been the other way around, she would have whining about how evil the Palestinians are, and how they used excessive violence, and have disregard for the loss of human lives. The fact that they keep blaming their victims, is unbelievable.
Let us keep in mind that not one Israeli solder was killed, nor injured.

On Fareed Zakaria today, I watched Hanan Ashrawi and Tom Friedman discuss the massacre, and it was an interesting segment.

        May 20, 2018, 3:29 pm

cigargod, you are anything but stupid. but here’s a few tips. a primary understanding of propaganda, one i read about first in the hasbara handbook, is news people read first and loudest is news they tend to believe and remember vs news that follows. or, the news that follows will be filtered through the 1st news. so when i read something that strikes me as questionable (for the reasons i mentioned up thread) the 1st thing i do is google the topic and see if anyone else has covered this news and at that time none had. iow, the ynet article was likely getting in front of the news and disseminating a falsehood. iow, a perfect petri dish for planting false allegations. not only that, commonly propagandists will work with online activists to saturate the innertubes with the fake news (and it’s always helpful to have some truth to circle the wagons with) before it breaks otherwise. and today there are several stories about it, although none but ynets mentions any allegation of him being angry with hamas. so what was the propaganda part of the story? bingo. and who is the propganda tool/affiliate and spreader of fake news, our very own useful idiot? bingo. plus, it just so happens that the “journalist” of the ynet article is none other than Elior Levy, “Palestinian affairs correspondent & analyst” for ynet. https://twitter.com/eliorlevy?lang=en and look what’s revealed here:(google translate https://twitter.com/eliorlevy/status/998243634788159488) “Erekat refuses to speak to me”. so he’s a Palestinian affairs correspondent who is shunned by palestinians! iow, probably a known tool (of the israeli gov) not to be trusted.

very same useful idiot: Mr. Harb worked for the PA and hadn’t received his salary in a long time.

now let’s put on our thinking caps and ask ourselves, the father worked for the P.A., the very same P.A. sanctioning Gaza right now and refusing to pay him his salary. the very article the useful idiot links to also links to another explaining Hamas had called on the P.A. to end Gaza sanctions. and it links to yet another article that says this: https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2018/4/10/pa-accused-of-withholding-payment-from-gaza-staff

The Palestinian Authority has paid salaries to its West Bank employees this month but not those in Gaza, officials said on Monday, amid an ongoing split with the strip’s Islamist rulers Hamas.

It was not immediately clear why the salaries had not been paid and if the delay was temporary, but it comes as relations between the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority and Hamas are at rock bottom.

Employees in Gaza waited in vain for salaries at banks, an AFP photographer said.

“Salaries were paid into banks in the West Bank and not in Gaza,” Arif Abu Jarad, head of the union representing PA employees in the Gaza Strip, told AFP.

“There is a state of anger among staff in the strip,” he added, saying they were having emergency meetings against this “terrible crime”.

now what “government” might the man have been angry with? the one he worked for that refused to pay his salary? or the one calling on that very same government to stop the sanctions? hmm. tough question!!!!

Funny how many supporters of Israel’s regularly scheduled civilian slaughters and random acts of barbarity are so concerned about Hamas being ‘held to account.’

I don’t know a single supporter of international law, the Geneva Conventions, countless UN resolutions or basic humanity who has ever defended ‘Hamas’. What people like you haven’t figured out is that every day more folks around the world wake up to the fact that Hamas is a red herring. The Palestinian issue is one of justice and equality, pure and simple, and it started long before Hamas came into existence.

And for that incremental but inevitable awakening you can thank the grotesque behaviour of the Israeli government and the thuggish military that enforces its policies of land and resource theft, its politicians who use language lifted directly from the Nazi playbook, its policies of systematic discrimination lifted directly from the apartheid playbook, its citizenry who wave placards reading ‘Kill them all’ in reference to Palestinians, and the useful idiots in the Western mainstream media who parrot Israel’s ludicrous contention that Palestinians living in Gaza’s hell on earth need ‘incitement’ by Hamas to demand their own freedom. Any student of colonialism can tell you how familiar all of this is, including racist mugs like you who happily spend your days blaming the victims and defending the indefensible.

As for the ‘useful idiots’ over here at Mondoweiss, why not undertake the biggest curse of all, and log out?

        Hear Hear!!!!!

Some have accused the Zionists of not learning from the Holocaust – the opposite is the truth. They have learnt well from the Nazis and are arrogant enough to believe they can do better at exterminating a people. Arrogance and a lust for supremacy blinds them from the inevitable.

I’m not sure about that. As far as I know, the Nazis could count.

Hamas attained its formation in Palestinian politics when Israel financed it and armed it to oppose Fatah. Hamas then threw Fatah out of Gaza and from that point opposed Israel as another resistance group whilst the PA collaborated with Israel.

Who learned well from us. The US treatment of the native Americans was the inspiration for Hitler’s lebensraum. https://indiancountrymedianetwork.com/history/events/ugly-precursor-to-auschwitz-hitler-said-to-have-been-inspired-by-us-indian-reservation-system/

Haley is wrong on the border issue. Israel controls the air, land and sea of Gaza as well as the electromagnetic space, the population registry, the food allowed in and who goes in and out. Israel is the occupier. Gaza is a district of Eretz Israel Hashlemah.
There is no border. Neither does Israel have a border with the West Bank. Israel does not have any declared borders. This is why it does not have a constitution. Instead it has Basic Laws.

I tracked this down on Talknic’s site as it shows Israel does have borders which it declared in its statement of attaining Sovereignty. These are the only legitimate borders Israel is recognised on globally by the vast majority of Nations. Jerusalem was not included or WestBank or Golan.

Letter From the Agent of the Provisional Government of Israel to the President of the United States, May 15, 1948
“MY DEAR MR. PRESIDENT: I have the honor to notify you that the state of Israel has been proclaimed as an independent republic within frontiers approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations in its Resolution of November 29, 1947, and that a provisional government has been charged to assume the rights and duties of government for preserving law and order within the boundaries of Israel, for defending the state against external aggression, and for discharging the obligations of Israel to the other nations of the world in accordance with international law. The Act of Independence will become effective at one minute after six o’clock on the evening of 14 May 1948, Washington time.” Also available as PDF from the Truman Library additional info from
      Recognition of Israel:
USA 15 May 1948 “… as an independent republic within frontiers approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations in its Resolution of November 29, 1947…”

This needs clarification from Israel…..why is it operating outside its declared borders. It has never legally annexed any other territory.

Israel was supposed to ratify its borders in a constitution and it never did.
Israel made a few promises in 1948 that it did not keep.

inbound39 – I think that it’s rather obvious the “vast majority of Nations” recognize Israel in the borders of the Green Line. In the 1950’s there were still all kinds of proposals that Israel withdraw to the 1947 Partition Plan borders, and there even was a proposal (“Alpha Plan”) that she give up the Negev Desert. However, surely since the acceptance of UNSC resolution 242 in November 1967, it is obvious that “occupied territories” mean those territories captured in June 1967.

Actually, the idea that Israel should be within the Partition Plan borders is an argument popular among anti-Israel activists. In other words, there are people who think that the UN had no right to propose a Jewish state in Palestine (and that there shouldn’t be Israel at all) – but within the framework of debate (i.e. in the propaganda war), they claim that Israel should be within the Partition Plan. Talknic is a good example of the phenomenon.

Your question (“why is it operating outside its declared borders”) also sounds like a statement from the anti-Israel world. The anti-Israel crowd doesn’t express an awareness of there being a conflict. The reason is that when there is a conflict, there are two sides to the story. A better question would be “why is there a conflict, and what could be its possible solution?”

And speaking of a possible solution, that would be my advice to the Palestinians. Instead of massive demonstrations along the fence with Israel, I would humbly suggest that they negotiate an end of conflict. People who really care about the Palestinians should take to heart that criticizing them is good and proper. Someone (for example the Mondoweiss website) could explain to them that it wasn’t such a good idea to send tens-of-thousands to the fence. It was obvious that the results would be bad. It would be better to announce a willingness to end the conflict, choose a delegation, and go and work out the details with the Jews.

Best thing for the Palestinians to do is hang around while Israel advances its suicide. Israel chose one apartheid state. Israel chose to spend less money than average on education. Israel chose to.spend $100 bn on Yesha.
Nobody outside cares about Israel. That is how sovereignty works. You make your choices and you take the consequences.

You are missing the point. The UN has absolutely no mandate to give away or divide up foreign lands. Given it is a democratic institution, then when a vote is taken the majority decision rules. The majority of the people of Palestine were against Partition so on that basis alone a seperate State of Israel was defeated by the majority vote . It was forced upon Palestine against its majority will. Israel agreed to the Partition and has only ever declared its Sovereign Borders as those of the Partition Plan accepting also the conditions set. Any further territory it has gained it has taken illegally by force in violation of International Law which it swore to comply and abide by. I tend to agree with Talknic. The conflict exists because European Zionist settlers arrived in Palestine with the stated intent of removing Arabs from their land and taking it by force for themselves using genocide if necessary. Many people, you will find are anti Israel due to Zionist behaviour and attitude. Who in the hell do they think they are? Like it or not they are bound by the same rules as the rest of us. None of the Ejuropean Zionists have a historic link to Israel……their history is in Europe.

Thank you echinococcus. What a joke.

“”When we saw the scratch on his head we just had to act immediately,” Israeli red cross member Jacob Alterman recalled, “he was visibly upset and was crying profusely, asking for his family members.

“We were all a little taken aback at the level of his injury. He even flinched when we tried to clean the abrasion with a cotton bud. Hopefully it won’t leave a scar”

Ok :) But if I believed it, there is a certainly a reason for that…

In fact, it remembered those stories we read about the behavior of the israeli soldiers in 2006 when they faced a real opposition.

“While the world stands by” fits Gaza, but not the Warsaw Ghetto. A largish chunk of the world was rather busy fighting the perpetrators of the latter.

This is no joking matter these pebbles were probably Iranian supplied WMS(Weapons of Mass Scratching) not to be confused of course with the even more terrifying Weapons of Mass Slapping which have emerged recently in the Occupied West Bank.

” In April 1956, military leader Moshe Dayan had a rare confession to make: “What we can say against their terrible hatred of us? For eight years, they have sat in the refugee camps of Gaza, and have watched how, before their very eyes, we have turned their lands and villages, where they and their forefathers dwelled, into our home.”
