Steve F persists that America loves Israel's vibe:
Obama and it dawned on me that the next four years could be tougher on you
and yours than the last eight!! At least during the Bush years you could clearly
view the administration as an ideological enemy. With Obama you are filled
with hope and joy. However, there is a real chance that he means what he
says about Israel. You might just have to consider that this
pro-Israel thing isn't just the result of a lobby but is a genuine mainstream
American political vibe which goes way beyond the beltway. I guess we will
have to stay tuned on this one but don't be surprised if you are
disappointed.
My response: Won't happen. Obama won't occupy Arab lands and initiate a cycle of violence. Right there he's doin better than the last 8 years. As to Americans loving Israel, even as it crushes Rachel Corrie to death and destroys Palestinian freedom, you want to believe that I will be Far Left unto the last day. And not actually mainstreamed. But I am getting mainstreamed. I see it happening every day. Latell Brad Greenberg interviewed me on his Godblog, and a couple days after me Jeffrey Goldberg. So the guy who left America to fight for another country fearing the treatment of Jews here and then supported a horrifying U.S. invasion of Arab lands suddenly has to make room for me in the discourse, a guy who's been in America the whole time, opposed that war, and has always been on the left. Change.
