The commemoration, first declared by the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Palestinian National Council in 1974, is held annually in solidarity with Palestinians held by Israel – currently numbered at 4,936 – and to honor over 800,000 previously detained.

Today’s demonstration, which ended at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)’s Gaza Strip headquarters, began at the site of the bombed Saraya complex, where a replica Israeli prison and a protest tent, housing an exhibit of art by detainees, have been erected.

Several participants, lacking the distinctive Guy Fawkes mask associated with the global “Anonymous” hacking network, instead wore one popularized by the Scream movie franchise to show support for the recent “Op Israel” attacks on Israeli Web sites and Internet accounts.
