‘Ads Against Apartheid’ is going national

Ads Against Apartheid (AAA) is going national with a their “ONE WORD” campaign, and not just in subways. News of their June campaign in Boston swept social media like a tsunami and the organization got flooded with messages from people all over the world lauding the ads with praise. Many inquiring how to get the ads in their town, cities, transit hubs, and even in their classrooms! AAA co-founder Richard Colbath-Hess told Mondoweiss the response has been “overwhelming.”

The ads feature one word per ad – HOMELESS, VIOLENCE, and STOLEN–  each representing an aspect of Israel’s unrelenting injustice towards Palestinians. AAA recently announced they were placing billboards in 8-10 major US cities by late 2014 or early 2015, including New York, Washington, DC, and San Francisco.

Sami Awad, Executive Director of Holy Land Trust (HLT), has joined AAA’s impressive advisory board. In conversation with Mondoweiss, Awad called the campaign a “game changer”:

Americans for the most part know very little about what is happening today in the Holy Land. Those who are aware wrongfully assume that this a conflict between two equal powers. The ONE WORD campaign has been a game changer in their ability to convey to Americans the devastating human rights abuses by the Israeli military and government against the Palestinian people. When these ads go national in the United States, Americans will start to understand the depth of the suffering Palestinians have endured under the Israeli military occupation. When Americans see Palestinians as human who suffer, whose children suffer, we know they will no longer be silent.

I can’t wait to drive through San Francisco and see this, albeit they’ll have to update these figures given Israel’s recent rampage and slaughter:

By request from many of their fans, they’ve launched an Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign, National Ad Campaign For Palestinian Human Rights. Let’s get them everywhere, and fast. I can’t think of a time when American communities have been so primed and ready or would be more receptive than today.

    This is brilliant – who would have thought…
    Waiting for this to arrive in NYC and shake up the wall street suits…

      Is this going to happen? Didn’t pressure get successfully applied in Boston and the ads have to be removed? How long can a handful of people hold the rest of us hostage?

        Greetings Annie,
        Well done, Dear.
        Does Federal Law allow States Rights to Publishing ads gen our favorite loving ally, Israel or is that gen US interests? Thank you.

      Me too. Proximate to either the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway) or the George Washington Bridge would be ideal.

      I hope pictures from around the country start flying in thick and fast, so we can bump them along social media. This could be a US solidarity game changer.

    Thank you for great news Annie. I was hoping someone would take the initiative and put up pro Palestinian posters and billboards, while the war was going on, and I am impressed that these groups are going ahead with it. It will make a great impact and open the minds of some, who are totally ignorant about the brutality of the occupation, and the result of Israel’s massacre in Gaza. Calling for the end of Apartheid is even better.
    I hope I am able to see some in the NJ area too.

    Let the howls of anti-semitism begin….one, two…

    Thank you. This is very positive news. I will be contributing to this. In the USA there is a dishonest suppression of the real facts about Israel/Palestine that falsely labels Israel as the only victim.

    Definitely get,s a donation from me.

    What better way to get people talking about the massacres and land theft.

    There will be quite a few peed off zionists traveling to/from work.Or just going about their daily business and wondering if they should speak up in favour of Israel.
    What with all those anti semites all over the place reading these Jew hatred lies and Arab propaganda.

    Great stuff.

    Yesterday’s Financial Times had an article that said before donors gave money for Gaza, Israel had to lift the blockade.

      Gaza will have to be rebuilt and nobody is going to put money in if the siege is still being run.

      Poor Israel is going to have look at Gaza differently.
      “Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to escalate the fight against Hamas, vowing the group would “pay a heavy price” after a four-year-old Israeli boy was killed by a mortar attack from Gaza, the first Israeli child to die in the six-week conflict.”

        It is a shame that a little kid lost his life in Israel, but the outrage about a child’s life being lost, by Bibi and his butchers, sounds hollow and hypocritical. Strange how they act like only their lives matter.

        Now let’s look at the stats on the other side, according to Democracy Now:
        “As the Israeli offensive in Gaza resumes, we look at the impact the military campaign has had on the children of Gaza. More than 467 Palestinian children have died since July. That is more than the combined number of child fatalities in the two previous conflicts in Gaza. According to the World Health Organization, more than 3,000 children have been injured, of which an estimated 1,000 will suffer from a lifelong disability. The United Nations estimates at least 373,000 children require direct and specialized psychosocial support. And, based on the total number of adults killed, there may be up to 1,500 children orphaned. Gazan children’s right to an education has also been severely compromised with at least 25 schools reportedly damaged so severely that they can no longer be used. We speak to Pernille Ironside, chief of UNICEF’s Gaza field office.

        “There isn’t a single family in Gaza who hasn’t experienced personally death, injury, the loss of their home, extensive damage, displacement,” Ironside says. “The psychological toll that has on a people, it just cannot be overestimated, and especially on children.”

        Someone please send Bibi a memo reminding him how many children were blown up by his brutal military, and still are as of today.

        Mayhem on August 23, 2014, 11:11 pm

        How many innocent children got killed when the Allies were fighting the Nazis? Hamas in their fascist theocratic anti-semitic state are the new Nazis. allbeit fortunately without the same firepower. The blockade by Israel and Egypt has at least prevented Hamas from inflicting worse damage on Israel. Their lack of ability to succeed in their aims does not disguise their malevolent intentions.
        All we hear from Kay24 are bleatings about the unfortunate deaths of innocent civilians and of course he picks on children because their deaths tug on the heart strings the strongest.
        If he was really concerned about the children per se he would be exhorting their Hamas leaders to stop firing rockets, one of which has now killed a 4 year old Israeli boy.
        If he was truly sincere with his concerns about the fate of innocent children he would be speaking out the loudest about what has been happening to the much larger number of children dying in Syria.
        But no. the I/P conflict is where he devotes all his energies because he is a confirmed Israel basher.

      • on August 28, 2014, 12:39 pm

        Nice example of Israeli apologetics by Mayhem.

        Killing kids is okay for Israel because it has been done by others in other places at other times;

        Hamas are the new Nazis;

        Presenting Israeli propaganda as fact in presenting the blockade as necessary for Israeli security;

        Characterizing concern about the death of innocent Palestinian children as “bleatings” and then noting we should be concerned about the death of one Israeli kid only paragraphs after minimizing the importance of the deaths of hundreds of Palestinian kids;

        And, of course, the look over there (at Syria this time) defense.

        These poor SOBs are so racist they are beyond reach. We need to stop them from infecting the next generations with this peculiar mix of racial superiority and an obsession with perceived victimhood for thousands of years that results in extreme paranoia.

      It’s called throwing good money after bad. I recall during their rampage in ‘o2 or ’03 on the West Bank the first things they destroyed were the building projects financed by foreign organizations.

      It will be hard but Israel needs to be forced to pay for the reconstruction out of their own pockets. You knocked it down, you pay for it.

        Except that s.o.p is that US will pay for the damage Israel does, supplemented by the EU. It’s like Israel is the dog, and the US steps after it, picking up Israel’s droppings with a pooper-scooper.

    I went to the site to make a donation and when I get to the payment section I find that they do not accept PayPal. I don’t understand why so many sites seeking funding do that. For a credit card I have to go back to my house from my backyard office, fetch my card, and enter all those numbers. For PayPal payments I just click a few buttons and it is done. I don’t have any connection to PayPal, but for the love of God, please include that option if you are seeking funds because it makes it much easier for many people to donate money.

      Won’t work. All of the social science research shows that people are turned off by confrontational stuff like this. If you can’t find anything positive to say about the Palestinians, you will not succeed.

        When the Israelis are openly calling for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. They are using that language of “Ethnic Cleansing.” They are openly calling for genocide.There was an article that was published twice in The Times of Israel, entitled: Genocide is permissible. they have openly changed the game on language being used. We can no longer just beg for people to listen to us about Israeli war crimes.

        I would invite you to listen to Dr. Rania Masri’s Powerful Speech at “Crisis in Gaza and West Bank: Context and Action”

    Annie, great project.

    although I had to look up “perks” … and meditated on the PR and Sponsorship wisdom and crowdsourcing in the larger context. Maybe more than about, what impact it would have on me if I were the target group. Would it make me hesitate at least?

    As with my offer the last time there was an effort to put up billboards in the Bay area, count me in for a modest donation of $50/month for 1 year. This is the most effective thing we can do. The PTB cannot suppress an awakened citizenry, and this is by far the best way to do it. I hope that this has more success than the last attempt.

      c&d, i am not affiliated with AAA. i think that is why they started the crowd funding campaign. so people could interact thru the group indiegogogo. or if you go to AAA’s website linked in the article you can contact them directly.
