The battle for Palestinian rights is universal

2021 has been a significant year for the Palestinian human rights movement. Mondoweiss provides a megaphone for Palestinians and their allies who are leading the way. Help us continue this important work.

Last summer, after the Israeli government dubbed 6 Palestinian human rights organizations “terrorists,” Mondoweiss had the distinct honor of publishing statements from the Palestinian leaders of each organization.

Their statements were courageous, tough, and thoughtful – each one of them more inspiring than the last as a pronouncement of sumud, or steadfastness. Just reading the words of such incredible leaders was inspiring.

But to know we would be possibly the only American news outlets to cover them was enraging.

Especially because, as they said, “The battle for Palestinian rights is universal.”

And Mondoweiss has been there to cover it all. It started with a simple commitment: to listen to Palestinians.

Will you reinforce this commitment with a gift today, instantly doubled thanks to generous Mondoweiss donors?

As we approach the end of the year, even in the face of so much suffering, I believe we will ultimately look back on 2021 as a significant year for Palestinian human rights making incredible progress despite unrelenting attacks.

Yes, that progress is rooted in Palestinian oppression and trauma. Yes, it stems from the onslaught on Gaza of last May. And yes, our inability to stop these atrocities is a stain on the American and the American Jewish communities I come out of.

But as always, the bravery and vision of Palestinian leaders point the way forward. We are witnessing the death of the “two-state solution” and in its place is the rising power of the movement for Palestinian rights in the apartheid reality of present-day Israel.

We can also see that power in many places today:

  • In September, progressive leaders in the US Congress managed to block $1 billion in funding for the Iron Dome weapons system for 24 hours.
  • In July, Ben & Jerry’s announced probably the most significant corporation withdrawal from the settlements we’ve seen yet.
  • In March, the International Criminal Court opened a formal investigation into human rights violations in the Occupied Territories.

These flashpoints were all years in the making. And Mondoweiss has covered them from the beginning for you, nurturing public understanding of the core issues by providing a megaphone for Palestinians and their allies.

Will you lift up the voices of Palestine with a generous donation today?

Palestinian experiences and ideas are the most powerful means we have to break through the Israel lobby’s propaganda front in the United States

And while that’s always been a part of what Mondoweiss provides you, 2022 can be even more significant with your help. We hired our first-ever Gaza correspondent this fall – Tareq S. Hajjaj, a writer of great elegance and precision. We’ve put your priorities and your money into action, making sure that a wider and wider audience can hear Palestinian voices from the other side of Israel’s 15-year siege.

And in 2022, we’re going to expand the number of stories we publish by Palestinians. We’re matching the growing intensity on the ground with a meaningful commitment to hiring Palestine-based reporters.

Will you help us make sure Palestinian experiences get the megaphone they deserve with your gift today?

We’re going to continue to invest in video production and our podcast series, making our work even more dynamic and accessible to wider audiences.

And we have plans to expand our coverage of U.S. politics as well. We know that the battle over Palestinian rights, especially within the Democratic Party and progressive movements, is essential if we’re going to truly hold Israel accountable.

If Palestinians lose, civil society everywhere loses. This battle is crucial if we’re going to continue to have a semblance of democracy here in the U.S.

We have made great and memorable progress this year. Your generous support will make 2022 even more consequential.

“If Palestinians lose, civil society everywhere loses.”

The Palestinian struggle is indeed a central front in a larger struggle. From my perspective, having been engaged in this struggle for 20 years, in a small personal way, and having been banned from several websites for posting too many facts, and having had many posts deleted, it is my view that Mondoweiss is an extremely valuable publication. It has been consistently dedicated to reporting the full facts, to logical analysis, and to common sense justice. In my view those are the foundations of a well-functioning civilization. Humankind has always had to contend with hidden agendas and misinformation. And it must continue to combat those if justice, the only path to peace and harmony, is to prevail.
