700 musicians join pledge to support for Palestinian freedom

Today, Musicians for Palestine is announcing 700 new signers and releasing a second statement. Organizer Stefan Christoff joins the podcast to discuss this milestone.

Stefan Christoff is an organizer with Musicians For Palestine. Hundreds of musicians from around the world signed on to their first statement of support for Palestinian freedom in 2021. Today, the group is announcing 700 new signers and releasing a second statement.

It reads, in part, “As musicians we can contribute to breaking the wall of silence and protest these great injustices taking place against the Palestinian people…We believe that now, more than ever, is the time to respect the Palestinian peaceful picket line by declining invitations to events that are subsidised or sponsored by the Israeli state, its lobby groups or complicit cultural institutions.”

I spoke with Christoff about the work to organize musicians, and we listen to a few of the artists that have signed the statements, including Brian Eno, Damon Davis, and Asher Gamedze.

US monitoring ‘onerous’ IDF limits on foreign visits to West Bank Palestinians…
The US is concerned by new “onerous” IDF regulations that could restrict foreign visits to Palestinian territories, scheduled to go into effect on October 20…“We remain concerned about the potential for these policies to reduce foreign travelers, volunteers, academics, students and investors in the West Bank,” a senior US Embassy official in Jerusalem told reporters on Sunday.

Breaking down Israel’s regulations on foreigners in the West Bank…Israel has published a draft set of rules that would restrict the entry of foreigners to the occupied West Bank….The regulations, which are set to come into effect next month, would affect foreigners wishing to visit, do business, reunite, and reside with their Palestinian families, work or volunteer in the West Bank, or study or teach at Palestinian academic institutions….HaMoked, a Jerusalem-based human rights organisation, criticised the new rules, saying that Israel will “prevent thousands of families from living together for blatantly political reasons”.
