As Israeli gov’t takes ‘bold’ extremist steps, some in U.S. call for sanctions

Calls for sanctions and BDS against Israel for its new government's actions against Palestinians are causing Israel to dig in.

The new Israeli government’s defiant statements and actions further humiliating Palestinians and stripping them of rights are spurring calls for concrete measures against that government.

The U.N. Security Council is due to meet in an emergency session tomorrow at the urging of the United Arab Emirates, over the provocative visit of Israeli police minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to the Noble Sanctuary in Jerusalem yesterday. That visit to the holy sites has drawn international outrage. Though Israeli officials are counting on the U.S. to block any resolution.

The U.S. government has been sharply critical of Ben-Gvir’s visit to the holy sites. But some in the U.S. are now calling for the withdrawal of U.S. military aid, and support for BDS, the boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib did so in reference to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s declaration that Jews have the exclusive right to live wherever they want in the entire land.

The fact that our country continues to fund this kind of clear and direct statement to eliminate the existence of a whole people is shameful. Palestinian people deserve to live + thrive.

While the Institute for Middle East Understanding called out the new government’s policies as the crime of apartheid:

To this far-right, fascist regime, worsening Palestinian oppression is a shameless demonstration of political might…. Countless innocent Palestinians will be killed by the new Netanyahu government, with the support of the majority of the Israeli public that elected him…. This is apartheid.

Today Jewish Voice for Peace seized the moment and issued a clarion call for American Jews to support BDS. “We call on progressive American Jews to join us in demanding an end to U.S. military funding to Israel, and to actively participate in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement until Palestinians are free.”

Tallie Ben-Daniel, the managing director of JVP, said the new Israeli government has openly embraced apartheid.

“The horrifying actions of this new government, only five days in, prove exactly what Palestinians have been saying all along: Israel is an apartheid state, where Palestinians are treated as inferior. The dangerous escalations by the new Israeli government make clear that now is the time for action.”

While Beth Miller, the group’s political director, scored the Biden administration’s failure to take “concrete action.”

“The Biden Administration has enabled and paved the way for this extremist Israeli government by ensuring total impunity for Israel’s actions and actively fighting against any attempts to hold the Israeli government accountable for its human rights violations.

At a State Department briefing yesterday, reporters echoed that criticism in repeatedly asking Ned Price why State is doing nothing in response to Ben-Gvir visit beyond expressing “deep concern” and reaching out to Israeli officials. Matt Lee of AP:

[You said before] we are going to take actions and use our voice in a way as to reduce tensions. So what actions? it sounds like you’re using your voice to say something, meh, something negative, but certainly there are no – there’s no consequence, at least from the U.S. position. I’m not saying there should be, but there doesn’t seem to be one. So what actions are you going to take?

Price said the U.S. is helping Palestinians materially and trying to advance “the two-state solution”.

Israelis are clearly feeling the heat from the American critics.

Today on i24 News, Danny Danon, an Israeli parliament member and Netanyahu stalwart, blew off the international criticism. “People are trying to scare us from taking bold decisions.” He said the government has the “full support” of the Israeli people in its actions in support of Jewish colonies in the West Bank. And he said, “I believe the U.S. should stand with Israel” if the UN Security Council tries to pass a resolution against the government’s actions at the holy sites.

A Netanyahu minister for the diaspora, Amichai Chikli, today accused former PM and now opposition leader Yair Lapid of being the “spearhead of BDS.”

“He does not understand that when he tells the whole world that this is a ‘dark’ government, the world does not distinguish between the government and the state,” Chikli said.

“The spearhead of the BDS movement is actually Mr. Yair Lapid,” Chikli accused.

In an interview on the PBS News Hour, Shibley Telhami called on the Biden administration to take real action against the Israeli government.

The president has been very reluctant to criticize any Israeli policies, including ones that he know are violations of international norms, in part up until now has been in order to keep Netanyahu out…

Now he’s counting on [Netanyahu] to rein in people who are more extreme, far more extreme than he is.

And how are you going to do that by just making statements privately, if there are no costs to be paid? Do you really blame these far right extremists to assume that there will be no consequences for their action? I just don’t see it.

Jim Zogby on twitter references a report that Israel will forcibly remove more than 1000 Palestinian residents of 14 villages in occupied territories and also demanded action:

Here’s a test for the Biden Ad: They said they’d judge Israel by its deeds. Now Israel announces in advance that they’ll commit the crime of expulsion. If the US doesn’t forcefully act to stop it, the Biden Ad can be judged as complicit in Israel’s violation of human rights & law

The liberal Zionist community is also taking steps toward real action.

Hadar Susskind at Americans for Peace Now called on the world not to normalize the new Israeli government as it devours the West Bank. He said American Zionist organizations are now trying to return to business as usual but this must not be the case. Susskind said urged Americans “to call out for justice” and “demand equality”. But he did not say just what actions the U.S. should take.

De facto annexation is a part of [this government’s] platform. It is explicitly a chief goal of its members. The occupation is the rot at the core of this putrid government…. American apologists have done Israel tremendous damage over the years by participating, both actively and passively, in normalizing the occupation…

If you care about Israel and its future as a liberal democracy, if you care about peace and a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike, you must resist the efforts to normalize this government.

Many American Jewish leaders and organizations, as well as American elected officials, have over the years and up until now, described their jobs as “defending Israel” and have done so even when they admitted that they disagreed with a particular policy or action. It’s time to step out of that comfort zone.

J Street’s “alarmed” statement could be way stronger. But they too seem to be on the road toward actual action to sanction Israeli conduct. “Ben-Gvir’s action is just the latest evidence that the new far-right Israeli government intends to pursue dangerous and escalatory policies on a number of fronts… J Street will continue to urge the Biden Administration and Congress to stand up clearly for the key principles and commitments that this government threatens.”

Israelis are clearly concerned about the threat to legitimacy posed by the new government. The Israeli president Isaac Herzog, a liberal Zionist, warned on December 30: that Israelis should not be overly negative about the government or think about leaving Israel.

“No one has the privilege to act or talk as if ‘the country is doomed’ or to reach out for their passport,” Herzog said… “I know that for many, this period is challenging and not an easy one. But Israeli democracy is long-standing and stable.

“In an interview on the PBS News Hour, Shibley Telhami called on the Biden administration to take real action against the Israeli government.” What real action? How about just formally recognizing the State of Palestine and letting the chips fall where they may? This scenario has been analyzed –

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-united-states-should-recognize-the-state-of-palestine/2015/03/27/1815e9b4-d366-11e4-ab77-9646eea6a4c7_story.html

The United States should recognize the state of Palestine...The Israeli-Palestinian peace process — the one that is supposed to end with a two-state solution — is on life support. Both sides in the conflict have made their share of missteps, but Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, all but pulled the plug earlier this month by pledging during his reelection campaign that Palestine would never become a state on his watch. [this was written in 2015] …A two-state solution has been an American policy for nearly two decades….how can the United States advance this goal? By recognizing the state of Palestine….This is not about punishing Israel; it’s about protecting U.S. national security. Recognizing Palestine would, by helping the two-state cause, address a key source of resentment toward the United States, making it easier for American policymakers to pursue other priorities in the Middle East…Recognizing Palestine would also address a persistent foreign policy problem: the divide between America’s official policy of support for Palestinian statehood and its continued support for an Israeli government that deliberately impedes that goal….In the end, recognizing Palestine would be both good for U.S. national security and consistent with basic American foreign policy values: support for self-determination and independence. Indeed, it was precisely these values that informed the U.S. decision to recognize Israel as an independent state in 1948.

[Yawn.]

The cheap talk and wooden nickels so brightly illuminated here can only turn into gold after AIPAC and CUFI, J Street and the State Department stop talking about two-states and start talking about equal rights for equal people in the Holy Land.

Meanwhile, those of us who are Jewish must loudly/proudly proclaim that Zionism is not kosher, and must demand that Israel refer to itself exclusively as a Zionist State—not as a Jewish State that defiles our heritage.

We must reject Zionist attempts to seize control of the Jewish brand, and we must protect and we must reclaim our honor before a Second Holocaust turns two thousand years of Jewishness to ashes.

Pending our redemption,

  • We must acknowledge our active and silent complicity in the Nakba (the Palestinian Holocaust).
  • We must defend Jewishness against attempts to link it to Israel’s apartheid and defend ourselves against charges of supporting and financing its Crimes Against Humanity.
  • We must condemn and reject Christians who drool at the prospect of a rapture for them spawned from an apocalypse for us.
  • We must demand that Israeli flags be removed from the bima, that prayers for criminal Israel no longer be heard in American synagogues, and that those who proclaim to be Jews only do so with concurrent contrition and repudiation of Zionism.
  • We must put Zionists on notice that we condemn and will shun them just as we do all bigots and racists.

Phil, thanks for the significant compilation of media outlets and political organizations speaking out about the latest efforts of an Israeli leaders provocative actions. The public responses sure on the increase over the decades. A bit of hope..

Matt Lee has always been on the front lines of the National press corp calling administrations out about their weak kneed responses to Israel’s clearly inflammatory choices, purposely trying to provoke Palestinians, as well as the violence perpetrated by Israel on Palestinians,. Sometimes the WH Press Corp sheep follow. Although, not often in the past. Helen Thomas used to be the only one brave enough to challenge and ask relevant questions about Israel’s actions. Many believe she was forced into a resignation due to her outspoken questions etc about the illegal occupation and expansion of illegal settlements and state sanctioned discrimination towards Palestinians. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M1Qo83CoGU

As we all know the U.S. has barely ever responded with guts when Israel has allowed, encouraged new illegal settlements to be created and expansion of older illegal settlements. These complacent responses from the U.S. have persistently been a green light for Israel to do as they please in most cases?

The last time I am aware of any U.S.administration attempting to play hardball with Israel over their illegal actions and growth of illegal settlements was President Bush and James Baker.

How many times has the U.S. blocked substantive actions, in particular UN resolutions formulated to respond to Israel’s illegal activities to pass?.

How much more is the US willing to take, and keep the unwavering support going? We have accepted the occupation, the land theft, illegal settlements, and we have even given them the weapons, and the ammunition, that are used to kill unarmed civilians. We have kept pretending we accept the lies and the justifications for killing more civilians than militants, and we have watched babies pulled out of the rubble, and accepted that too. The world’s greatest democracy did NOTHING to stop the crimes against occupied, helpless people.

What is the US really waiting for? For the apartheid nation, now led by those we don’t accept in other nations, terrorists, and ultra right wing religious extremists, to massacre all the Palestinians, and seize every inch of land? As a tax payer, it is disgusting to see where our taxes are going, and what these ungrateful, arrogant people are doing with it. Our government has acted naive, when one administration after another, keep talking about two state solutions, and wanting peace, that everyone knows the apartheid nation is not interested in. ALL they want is to inflict pain and suffering on their victims, and hope they will perish, or leave. We are supporting an evil entity.

The time to stop the aid, and weapons, flowing to Israel, and time to boycott and sanction them, was a long time ago. America is deliberately slow to make sure the Palestinians achieve their freedom and basic rights.

This new government hasn’t been shy about it’s policies, objectives, and exactly what it intends to do. Not that these are any difference to the policies, objectives, and actions of every single other previous Israeli government since its inception.

The only difference is that now they are no longer saying one thing publicly and doing what they’ll always done anyway, they’re simply and unabashedly saying that they are going to crack down harder on ALL Palestinians, take more land, displace more Palestinians, take provocative action at Al-Aqsa, and facilitate further illegal theft of property in East Jerusalem by ultra-right wing Settlers. They have already kept their promise and have done EXACTLY what they said they would do.

They have wounded and killed more Palestinians. Approved the forced displacement of more than a 1000 Palestinians in Musafer Yatta. The new National Security Minister has violated the sovereignty of Al-Aqua compound and then immediately challenged Hamas to respond to his highly provocative action. Israeli police have also just helped ultra-rightwing settlers in East Jerusalem expel and steal land and property belonging to the Greek Orthodox Church.

They’re not just saying the quiet part out loud, they are DOING it. And louder than ever!

They even have the chutzpah to say directly to the US, “So what? You’re not just going to accept this you are also 100% going to defend this at this week’s expected emergency UNSC meeting.”

Like a good doggo, the Biden Administration has already heeled like a little bitch and are poised to do exactly as instructed. There seems to be no humiliation that Biden and his like in Washington D.C. aren’t willing to endure for the actions of Apartheid Israel. None!
