Mondoweiss grows as the movement for Palestinian liberation grows stronger

For nearly two decades, Mondoweiss has been at the forefront of shifting the conversation on Palestine, giving a platform to stories that the mainstream media often ignores and political powers attempt to silence.

Mondoweiss has evolved over the last 18 years, but our mission remains the same.

We are dedicated to sharing Palestinian stories, and to serving as a platform for the movement and the activists who push us closer to liberation each day. Since Mondoweiss’ launch, our staff expanded from just two members to ten, including a dedicated team based in Palestine. What started as a blog is now a true multimedia platform, featuring original reporting and opinions, videos, podcasts, and distinctive social media content that is reaching and educating new audiences. We institutionalized our Palestine-based reporting by establishing a permanent Palestine Bureau, making us one of the only independent movement-based journalism publications with full-time operations on the ground in Palestine.

Today, the call for Palestinian liberation and freedom grows louder, as people around the world awaken to the just struggle of the Palestinian people. After a year of brutal Israeli genocide in Gaza, which has been covered up and justified by the mainstream media, the need for trusted sources of news on Palestine is at an all-time high. And as the movement in solidarity with Palestine grows, Mondoweiss is growing to meet that demand.

Mondoweiss is excited to announce important staff transitions in support of a new organizational model of collaborative leadership. This team will lead a reinvigorated vision for our voice and place in the growing movement for Palestinian freedom.

Yumna Patel is assuming the role of Editor-in-Chief after six years leading Mondoweiss’ Palestine-based reporting in the occupied West Bank, first as Palestine Correspondent and later as Palestine News Director. As head of our Palestine operations, Yumna worked closely with Mondoweiss’ correspondents and freelancers to bring unique and underreported coverage to our audiences. Yumna spearheaded Mondoweiss’ video productions, working with crews in Palestine to produce short-form documentaries and videos that garnered millions of views. In her new role as Editor-in-Chief, Yumna will lead Mondoweiss’ growing editorial and digital teams, ensuring Mondoweiss is a must-read resource for news, opinion, and analysis about Palestine.

A decade ago when I was a college student first engaging in activism for Palestine, Mondoweiss was a place where students like me could freely express their opinions and advocate for Palestinian liberation without censorship. Throughout my professional career, Mondoweiss has continued to be that space for myself and so many others. I am honored to continue Mondoweiss’ legacy of being a platform for the movement and Palestinian voices and stories. We are in the midst of a painful and historic moment that demands fearless and unapologetic media and storytelling. I look forward to making sure Mondoweiss is that place.

Faris Giacaman, Mondoweiss’ Managing Editor since 2022, is moving into a new role as Palestine Editorial Director. In his new position, Faris will lead Mondoweiss’ Palestine Bureau, including staff writers, correspondents, and freelance writers, as they cover developing stories on the ground in Gaza, the West Bank, and across the region. As Israel’s attempts to ethnically cleanse Palestinians and silence the Palestinian narrative are at an all-time high, it is more critical than ever that we highlight and platform Palestinian stories and voices. Under Faris’ leadership, Mondoweiss’ Palestine team will continue to deliver unique stories, perspectives, and analyses that reflect on-the-ground expertise and a deep understanding of Palestinian society and the liberation movement.

The two years I spent as Managing Editor at Mondoweiss were incredibly rewarding and allowed me to be involved in every aspect of our editorial work. Moving into my new position as the Palestine Editorial Director, I’m excited to be able to focus more on developing the Palestine Bureau’s in-depth reporting and launching several ambitious projects that will bring you more Palestinian voices, analysis, and investigations.

David Reed steps into the revamped role of Publisher after working with Mondoweiss in several capacities since 2011. During his time at the organization, David redesigned and streamlined the Mondoweiss website, increased our presence on social media platforms, and launched several editorial products, including newsletters and the Mondoweiss Podcast. He brings years of experience in organizational development, including within the philanthropy world, and a long-term commitment to the Palestine solidarity movement. As Publisher, David will lead Mondoweiss’ operations, continue to develop new products, grow our advertising, marketing, and merchandise channels, and focus on expanding the organization.

Working with the Mondoweiss team is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding opportunities I’ve had in over twenty years of engagement in the Palestine solidarity movement. I’m excited to step into this new role and help grow Mondoweiss’ ability to shift the political discussion about Palestine in the media, U.S. politics, and beyond.

While there is change at Mondoweiss, there is also important continuity.

After 18 years at the helm of Mondoweiss, during which time they transformed it from a personal blog to a trusted source of journalism on Palestine for millions around the globe, our founder Philip Weiss, and Executive Editor Adam Horowitz are stepping into new roles.

Adam Horowitz moves from Executive Editor, where he led the Mondoweiss Editorial team for 10 years, to Managing Editor. In this new role, Adam will lead Mondoweiss’ U.S. Bureau, and oversee and expand our freelance and contributor submissions. As Managing Editor, Adam will continue to serve as a critical part of Mondoweiss’ leadership and decision-making bodies, bringing his years of organizational knowledge and expertise to the new leadership team working to further Mondoweiss’ mission.

These transitions at Mondoweiss perfectly reflect our continuing evolution over the past 18 years from a personal blog run by Phil and me to a trusted news source and platform for the Palestine movement. While we are retaining the knowledge and experience that has helped guide Mondoweiss over these years, we are expanding our organization to benefit from the amazing skills and expertise of the Mondoweiss staff who can best lead us into the future. These exciting changes not only best situate us as a growing organization to carry out our mission but most importantly to best serve the movement for Palestinian liberation.

Philip Weiss, the site’s founder and Senior Editor continues to write, contribute, and provide guidance to the staff based on his decades of journalism experience. Philip’s distinctive voice has functioned as the heartbeat of this organization for so many years. His relentless commitment to challenging Zionism and shifting the narrative on Palestine in the U.S. has been central to the Mondoweiss mission since launching the site 18 years ago. Phil is currently on book leave and taking a much-deserved sabbatical, but his voice and impact on our publication continue to be felt.

Since its beginnings, Mondoweiss has provided the type of news coverage traditionally sidelined, ignored, and silenced. We remain strongly committed to challenging Zionism and centering the voices and narratives of Palestinians, and the activists around the world working toward Palestinian liberation. As we find ourselves at a historic crossroads, with the lives and futures of millions of Palestinians hanging in the balance, we know that our mission to further this movement and struggle for a Free Palestine is more needed than ever before.

We rise to this moment because of the tireless and dedicated work of our team over the past two decades and the steadfast support of our donors and readers. With this new organizational structure and leadership team, Mondoweiss is positioned to expand its reach and impact along with the movement to end Israeli colonialism and genocide.

The movement for Palestinian liberation is gaining momentum, turning the tide of global power. Mondoweiss is committed to amplifying those at the forefront.

Join us as we continue this critical work.
