On Sunday Israel’s minister of communication Ayoub Kara said he is banning Al Jazeera from broadcast, shutting its Jerusalem bureau, and revoking press credentials for reporters with the Doha-based network, citing the media outlet as a “tool for the Islamic State” and creating biased content when covering recent demonstrations regarding the al-Aqsa mosque. But, commentators have raised the point that Israel is unable to pass sweeping bans and the network and its journalists will likely continue to work in the country. 

Today the Washington Post published a leaked transcript of classified calls that took place in January 2017 where Donald Trump name-dropped Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the President of Mexico. “Bibi Netanyahu told me the wall works,” Trump said to Enrique Peña Nieto in efforts to convince him to pay for construction of a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

As Israelis marked “Jerusalem Day,” a commemoration of Israel’s capture of the eastern half of the city in 1967 with a parade through the Old City, a group of left-wing American Jews and Israelis blocked their path with a sit-in. Traditionally the march is accompanied by Palestinians protesting outside of the Old City walls, voicing dissent against what is regarded as a celebration of Israel’s occupation of Jerusalem and the West Bank. This year the parade was obstructed by liberal Jews for the first time in recent memory.

Aarab Marwan Barghouti, the son of jailed Palestinian official Marwan Barghouti who is leading a hunger strike of more than 1,500 Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons, gave a boost to prisoner solidarity campaigns by releasing a video of him drinking a bitter mixture of salt and water. The clip closes by asking others to participate in his “salt water challenge” in solidarity with the Palestinian hunger strikers.
