The Israeli Supreme Court rules that the killing of four Palestinian boys playing soccer on the beach during the 2014 assault on Gaza cannot be prosecuted because military commanders were seeking to distinguish civilian from military targets as much as was practicable. The “ruling in the Bakr boys’ case is further evidence that Israel is unable and unwilling to investigate and prosecute soldiers and commanders for war crimes against Palestinian civilians,” say the human rights groups that sought an investigation of the killings.

On July 19th, the American Friends Service Committee held a symbolic morning commemoration on Montrose Beach in Chicago to remember the children killed by the Israeli military in the summer of 2014. AFSC’s morning remembrance on Montrose Beach consisted of placing black pinwheels in the sand. Each pinwheel symbolizes a child killed, and is labeled with their name and age. AFSC chose the location of a beach to symbolize the loss of the four Baker boys who were killed by the Israeli military while they were playing soccer on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea on July 16, 2014.

Five children in the Abu Jarad family were killed, and a family “erased” by an Israeli Apache helicopter attack a year ago. The U.S. funds Israel’s military machine, and insures that there is never accountability for war crimes. A Capitol Hill briefing on July 29 led by the US Campaign to End the Occupation aims to end that immunity.

Israel absolved itself of responsibility for the killings of four boys from the Bakr family who were playing soccer on the beach in Gaza. Dan Cohen visits the home. A survivor of the attack, Muntasir is called “the living martyr.” Wounded badly in the attack, he requires medical attention and tells himself if only they’d held his hand, his brother and nephew would still be alive
