Eleven years ago filmmaker Udi Aloni moved to the Jenin refugee camp to work at the Jenin Freedom Theater. During that time he lived in Zakaria Zubeidi’s house. Here, Aloni recalls several stories from him time with Zubeidi on the nature of art and resistance.

Israeli forces shot and killed four Palestinian young men, including at least two teenagers, during military raids on the Jenin refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank early Monday morning. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian affairs, Israeli forces have conducted more than 2,500 arrest raids in the West Bank since the beginning of the year.

Last week an Israeli district court ruled against a Palestinian filmmaker and actor, Mohammad Bakri in a defamation and libel case, ordering him to pay hefty compensation to an officer in the Israeli military who was accused of carrying out war crimes in the 2002 documentary “Jenin, Jenin.” Ramzy Baroud says the verdict can be understood within two contexts: one, Israel’s regime of censorship aimed at silencing any criticism of the Israeli occupation and apartheid and, two, Israel’s fear of a truly independent Palestinian narrative.

Maen Abu Hafez, 24, has been held for 20 months in Israeli detention and is being threatened with deportation to Brazil.

Maen Abu Hafez, 24, was born in Brazil to a Palestinian father from the Jenin Refugee Camp, and he has lived in the camp since he was 3 years old. However, Israel never issued his family an ID card establishing their residency in the West Bank and Abu Hafez is now facing deportation to Brazil after a routine traffic stop. Despite being Palestinians and living in an area under the control of the Palestinian Authority, the lives of the Abu Hafez family, and hundreds of families like them — a Palestinian married to a foreign spouse and their children — are in the hands of the Israeli government, who has control over the Palestinian population registry.
