Israeli Soldiers Attack Home of Palestinian Whistle-Blower

A horrifying story, only in The National out of Abu Dhabi: Israeli soldiers have regularly shot at the home of Salam Amira, a 16-year-old Palestinian girl who shot video of an Israeli soldier shooting a handcuffed Palestinian protester at close range.

The treatment of the [Arab] family stands in stark contrast to the leniency
shown to the soldier and his commander involved in that incident.

B’Tselem,
an Israeli human rights group, has accused the Israeli army of seeking
“revenge” for the girl’s role in exposing the actions of its armed
forces in the West Bank.

[The soldiers] may also be hoping to dissuade other
families from airing similar evidence of army brutality, particularly
since B’Tselem began distributing dozens of video cameras to
Palestinians across the West Bank.

What's it all about? The villagers of Nilin are protesting the construction of the illegal wall that will separate them from most of the village lands. They are doing so nonviolently:

The people of Nilin have tried various non-violent forms of protest,
including praying in the path of the heavy machinery, using mirrors to
reflect sunlight at the construction workers, banging pots and pans and
placing rocks in the way of the bulldozers during the night. The
army has responded with tear gas and stun grenades, as well as on
occasion, with rubber bullets and live ammunition. Last month it was
reported that Israel was also experimenting with a new crowd dispersal
method called “skunk”, which involves firing a foul-smelling liquid at
demonstrators.

In the past few weeks, two youngsters have been
shot dead by the army, including one, Ahmed Moussa, who was 10. The
army claimed he was throwing stones.

Where is our press on this outrage? Abe Foxman? Where is the American Jewish community? The leadership is off bashing Jimmy Carter and Walt and Mearsheimer for being non-Jewish and criticizing Israel. And what is this Israel that we must so vigorously defend day and night? Read Haaretz. Read the Arab press…

That National piece is by the great British journalist Jonathan Cook.

We in the US have to make do with Thomas Friedman and Ethan Bronner and Linda Gradstein. It is a "Jewish subject," after all.

  2. cheryl b says:

When Rachel C's parents visited Gaza in 2003 an IDF tank pulled up right outside the home they were visiting and sat – this after coordinating the visit with the American Embassy and the IDF. The IDF "visited" a home that the Corries had visited destroying a wall and holding the family for a number of hours. It was and is a military out of control. Intimidation is its number one weapon.

  3. Chuck says:

Yes, but Richard Witty tells us the Israeli Army is a moral good acting for the defense of Israel and that the American Army is evil and imperialistic. He's got a real knack for telling the truth about everything doesn't he?

  4. cheryl b says:

Salam and her family have more courage than the entire U.S. government…Obama, Lugar, Biden, Condaleeza, Clinton, Kerry, Voinivich,Boxer, Feinstein, Dole… all are very aware of the failure of the Israeli investigation into Rachel's death, all are aware that the Israeli's lied to the Americans and/or that "My Name Is Rachel Corrie" has not been performed because of Jewish sensitivities and they sit quiet…intimidated by ?????

  5. cheryl b says:

If it is true that Mr. Witty believes that the IDF is a moral good, I would like his explanation for them shooting Tom Hurndall in the head and covering it up, shooting HBO cameraman James Miller and now trying to pay off his family to stop British pressure, Shooting Shaden Abu Hijlah in the face numerous times and then failing to investigate and Rachel..with an investigation that the U.S. State Department finds without equivocation lacking credibility and thoroughness..the IDF is full of fabrication and lies….where is the moral good to be found? And now they are after this young girl…what big brave people they are.

What does their almost univeral support of the IDF say about Israeli and American Zionists in general?

'Why don't Palestinians adopt Gandhi's methods' the Zionists ask.

    - where exactly has that got any Palestinians who adopted them?

    - how come the Israelis don't adopt Gandhi's methods?

    - if Zionists feel the Palestinians need such a leader to achieve their goals of justice and restitution, they must then support those goals

    - has Israel ever produced a leader fit to tie the non-existent laces of Gandhi's sandals?

To paraphrase Rabbi Perrin again, 1000 Israeli leaders are not worth one of Gandhi's fingernails.

'Yes, but Richard Witty tells us the Israeli Army is a moral good acting for the defense of Israel and that the American Army is evil and imperialistic. He's got a real knack for telling the truth about everything doesn't he?'

And a talent for careful avoidance of posts and threads like this one, involving as it does obvious Israeli atrocity, where his chin-scratching, goalpost-moving and general gibberish cannot get any purchase at all.

'If it is true that Mr. Witty believes that the IDF is a moral good, I would like his explanation for them shooting Tom Hurndall in the head and covering it up, shooting HBO cameraman James Miller and now trying to pay off his family to stop British pressure, Shooting Shaden Abu Hijlah in the face numerous times and then failing to investigate and Rachel'

If you are lurking Richard, how about coming in out of the cold and addressing cheryl's questions? Don't be a fair-weather foe.. if Zionism is as morally correct as you say it is, there's nothing to be afraid of, is there?

So if one can find ANY false news in Arab newspapers it logically follows that ALL Arab newspapers tell lies ALL the time.

Oh and I 'spose a corollary would be:

    ONLY Arab News tells lies

There you have it folks – great moments in logic and Philosophy brought to you by someone called Mafish Falastin

  9. Arabs regularly lie, they are extremely violent there (constantly throwing rocks, firebombs, etc. at soldiers), and as we know, and Jonathan Cook has a clear anti-Israel position across the board:

  11. Hubris says:

Jonathan Cook has a clear anti-Israel position across the board:

NO, J Cook has an Anti-Racist position.

It only appears to you to be anti-Israeli because Israel is a very racist place

  13. samuel burke,

We sure do have a lot to be proud of: We built a modern country out of the desert even with the entire Arab/Muslim world trying to destroy us; a country where the Arab citizens here have more rights and freedoms than in their own countries.

You want racism? THIS IS RACISM

We won't allow that here in our land.

PS Must be a "coincidence" that even Sudanese Muslims are dying- literally, to get to Israel.

  14. cheryl b says:

I spoke with Shaden Abu Hijlah's sister a few months ago. She tells me that Shaden was a real leader and wonderful speaker. Some women of Nablus had begun to take flowers and lay them at the feet of the IDF. She said that Shaden would not let the curfew which could go on for days stop her from going to the nearby grocery…When the IDF shot her repeatedly they must have known that she had courage and was standing up to them and the occupation? When the Bush administration applied pressure that the case be investigated, did not both it ande the Israeli's know that it was all a smokescreen…that there would be no follow up, no one who could follow the maze that the Israelis/Americans(State and Congress especially) construct. If one reads the Country Reports on Human Rights 2003 one reads about Shaden (nameless although a high profile case) but no follow up the following year. These reports fall under the jurisdiction of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee – Lugar, Biden, Voinivich, Obama et all. Salam my well make it into the Country Reports and it will say that an investigation is pending, pending, pending….. and the next year her case will disappear from the Reports and her brief flit with recognition from the U.S. government of a human rights violation will pass. There is nothing moral about any of this.

  15. Hubris says:

    The shorter Mafish Falastin :

Saudi Arabia is racist – ergo Israel is NOT racist

The fact that roads exist for colonists and NOT for Palestinians is of course NOT AT ALL similar to the image Mafish Falastin linked to to support his 'logic'

  16. trying to fix the text display.

  17. I'm sure that constant shooting and harassment of IDF soldiers involved in these little dust-ups happens all the time too, and if so, the Israelis are equally unconcerned about it.

You try to make it seem as if there is some sort of criminal double standard at work.

    What?

    Oh.

    Never mind.

"We" built? You mean you're not posting from the U.S.? Why do I suspect you are? Talk about an hypertrophied sense of tribal identity. Talk about hive mind.

For the diaspora community, Israel is just a stage to play out their perverse fantasies.

Ultra-Orthodox 'Modesty Guard' suspected of beating Jerusalem woman

U.S. immigrant beaten up in 'pogrom' by ultra-Orthodox gang

    By Daphna Berman, Haaretz Correspondent

An American immigrant was attacked and beaten Sunday night in Beit Shemesh by a gang of ultra-Orthodox zealots, in what appears to be an escalation of tension between religious groups in the city.

T., who is himself ultra-Orthodox, was kicked, beaten and threatened with further violence in an attack that landed him in the hospital. T.'s car windows were also smashed. T., who asked to go unnamed, has been active in trying to stem the recent tide of Haredi violence in the city…..

Beit Shemesh Anglos protest rising violence by Haredim

    By Daphna Berman

….Tensions have been brewing in city for years, but for many of the protestors, the attack two weeks ago – when a woman and an male Israeli soldier were assaulted by ultra-Orthodox youth for sitting next to each other on a Beit Shemesh-bound Egged bus – was a watershed moment.

"The violence and vandalism has been escalating in the past couple of years, but when a woman is beaten up for sitting on the wrong end of the bus, we began to see the writing on the wall and realize that we have to do something," long-time resident Eliyahu Shiffman said at the protest….

  23. cheryl b says:

"Salam Amira, a 16-year-old Palestinian girl who shot video of an Israeli soldier shooting a handcuffed Palestinian protester at close range.

[The soldiers] may also be hoping to dissuade other families from airing similar evidence of army brutality,"

So the Israeli army it is suggested, may be seeking revenge and attempting to intimidate others…..My point exactly…Shaden Abu Hijleh was nonviolently standing up to the IDF. She is dead and no credible investigation. Tom Hurndall was a photographer sending out photos of Palestinian homes filled with bullet holes. In addition, he was helping kids being fired on by the IDF. Which of these two activities got him murdered we will probably never know. James Miller was filming home demolitions…not something the IDF wants broadcast…revenge or intimidation. And Rachel, two days before her death gives a press conference shown on Mideast TV showing the bulldozers working inside the walled area…that is beyond the border, beyond the Philadelphi Road, beyond the wall being constructed and right up at Palestinian homes. Standing up to the IDF, President Bush and Prime Minister Sharon and having the audacity to hold a press conference on mideast t.v.Neocons like Gaffney and Perle might even suggest that this is not supporting the war effort, not supporting the U.S…. Do you suppose that any of that group would have wanted that kind of press on the eve of the Iraq War? Revenge or intimidation or accident. We will never know because the Israeli's don't do credible investigations in the territories and the Americans cannot or will not put pressure on Israel, even if they would like to….AIPAC, Camera, and the myriad other lobbying, pressure, advocacy, and watchdog groups see that a simple truthful investigation will never occur..Perle and Frum even add to the chorus.in their lovely book…Revenge and intimidation ….and now young 16 year old Salam will know the true meaning of power…and standing alone against and up to one of the world's stongest militaries. backed by the U.S. government (Rachel's words paraphrased)

Two Border policemen convicted of manslaughter in killing of Palestinian teen (By Haaretz Service)

Two Border policemen were convicted of manslaughter Tuesday for their part in the kidnapping and wrongful death of a Palestinian teen from Hebron in 2002.

The two, Shahar Botbeka and Denis Alhazov, were posted in Hebron in 2002 when they along with two other patrolmen abducted several Hebron residents, among them 17-year-old Amran Abu Hamadiya, and took them for a ride in their jeep. They abused the men and beat them with truncheons and rifles. They hurled Abu Hamadiya out of the moving vehicle, causing his death……
