I find Gov. Palin's announcement that 17-year-old daughter Bristol is pregnant and will have the baby and marry a little disturbing. Not the pregnant part, or even the I'm-havin-my-baby part. The marriage part.
Earlier this year I did a story on married sexuality where I spoke of the incredible change in the last 40 years in the age at which people get married. Premarital sex is a norm, nearly–the vast majority of Americans experience it. And marriage has gotten put off as a result. Seven years later on average, as I recall, since the 1960s. This study at the Kinsey Institute site speaks of "long term and massive" changes in the character of premarital sexual activity, says that the link between marriage and sexuality has become "unraveled."
Most people seem to think this is a good thing with respect to teenagers, young people. They are learning about sexual compatibility, learning about the difference between sex and love, learning who they are. You don't have to be a free spirit like me to say such things.
I understand that Bristol's going to keep this baby. Even if she supports abortion rights, it would be hard for her to separate herself from the ideology of her family under the political circumstances, and maybe they have a legal right at her age to assert that claim… What I find disturbing is the suggestion that this teenager is being forced into marriage with some guy she barely knows because she… oh my god! had sex. How long's that marriage going to last? Who's this good for? There are plenty of other creative options to deal with an unwanted pregnancy, including Sarah and Todd helping to raise it…
More evidence that Palin is a primitive who shouldn't be this close to the White House.

I would not want to be Bristol. It's bad enough telling your holier-than-thou mom you're knocked up. This poor kid has to meet with the campaign machine to figure out how to cope with the press and decide what kind of spin they will put on this mess. It's Jamie Spears all over again.
Additionally, this girl is another example of how wrong it is for parents to assume THEIR kids won't make mistakes like having unsafe sex. Bristol has been dating this 26-year-old guy for three years. What did the Palin think her daughter and her LEGAL ADULT boyfriend were doing?
As for the marriage, I would have expected nothing but that. Again, they have been dating for three years. The girl is obviously more than ready to start playing house. Let's hope her boyfriend is as happy about the outcome as she must be.
NY Times op-ed columnist David Brooks has informed us about his opinion of Barack Obama's family. I am interested what he thinks about the Palin family.
.
I'm sorry I blasted Phil for his support of Obama. Now I myself am willing to cross my fingers and believe.
How does Phil know this is 'some guy she barely knows'.
Aren't most marriages in the world like this? How long will the marriage last you ask? Probably 'til death separates one from the other.
This woman's values dictate that marriage is about shared sacrifice and about forging a lasting bond rather than about hedonism and personal benefits. I think most westerners could learn a thing or two from the 'brown' people of the world in this regard.
But go on and indulge in the "west knows best" way of thinking. This delusion may lead to prosperity and high levels of achievement, but it will also lead to the near extinction of your race.

Now I see Tracy said they've been together for three years. I think the parents were right to push her into marraige.
The issue of the Anchorage Daily News for 22 April 2008 has a story that just before Trig’s birth, Gov. Sarah Palin took a very long plane-and-car ride from Dallas, TX, to Wasilla, AK, after having told her OB/GYN that she was experiencing a different kind of labor contractions and that she was leaking amniotic fluid.
http://www.adn.com/front/story/382864.html
[quote from the article:]
…Early Thursday [April 17, 2008]– she thinks it was around 4 a.m. Texas time — she consulted with her doctor, family physician Cathy Baldwin-Johnson, who is based in the Valley and has delivered lots of babies, including Piper, Palin's 7-year-old. Palin said she felt fine but had leaked amniotic fluid and also felt some contractions that seemed different from the false labor she had been having for months. "I said I am going to stay for the day. I have a speech I was determined to give," Palin said. She gave the luncheon keynote address for the energy conference…. Palin did not ask for a medical OK to fly, the doctor said…. [end excerpt]
Gov. Palin didn’t tell the airline – owing to the leaking fluid, the airline would not have let her board the plane. Either the governor either then knew about the Downs’ Syndrome of Trig or she didn’t, but either way, her judgment in making that trip under the circumstances was poor. Trig was born on the 19th shortly after the end of a trip having these timelines:
Flight time from Dallas to Seattle: 4 hours
Wait time at Seattle: 1 hour
Flight time from Seattle to Anchorage: 4 hours
Drive time to Wasilla: 1 hour
A ten-hour trip after amniotic fluid starts leaking. Some judgment.

And let's do the math, people. Bristol is 17. The father of the child is 26.
Bristol?
What's next… Scunthorpe? Bognor Regis? Slough?
Of course she had to get married; they can't have a veep with an unwed mother for a daughter. Especially if she'd been in an illegal relationship as a minor. Thank Christ for Palin she's not a Democrat!
America is pretty much unsatirisable. Truth is stranger than fiction.
I am so tired of Republicans embarrassing our country.
What a joke that party is.
Please go somewhere far away and leave the rest of us alone!
Let's all throw rocks at the 17 yo pregnant girl!
However, no such stoning for the venerated Mrs. Obama, or was she ever married to the 3rd world goat-herd, bigamist, dead-beat, lothario?
Stanley Ann Dunham was 17 or 18 when she was impregnated by an older Barak Sr. Barak Sr already had impregnated multiple women in Africa and bailed on them in the search for paler prey in the USA.
Where are Stanley Ann's marriage license and divorce papers? Could Saint Barak be a bastard?
"However, no such stoning for the venerated Mrs. Obama."
Hey, Republicans:
There's a big difference here you don't seem to grasp: Barack Obama's mom never sought to become first in line for the presidency of the USA and Commander-in-Chief of the military.
Sarah Palin has.
She's being forced into marriage, because her mother is running for VP in the Republican party. Oh the political calculus it must have involved to figure out whether it would be better for Sarah to have the baby unmarried, have the baby married or abort. This must have involved some late nights.
Tracy says-
"Additionally, this girl is another example of how wrong it is for parents to assume THEIR kids won't make mistakes like having unsafe sex. Bristol has been dating this 26-year-old guy for three years. What did the Palin think her daughter and her LEGAL ADULT boyfriend were doing?"
- thereby playing into Phil's Li'l Abner scenario that serves as contrast for Phil's tikkunite/noble savage/egalitarian fantasy represented by the suave, erudite and essentially bastardized Obama.
However, the truth is somewhat different, if not as fully sordid as the erstwhile egalitarians might prefer:
http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-na-palin2-2008sep02,0,3666723.story
"Although the campaign declined to release the father's full name, residents of the Palins' hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, seemed familiar with the couple. They identified the father as a fellow high school senior and a prominent player on the school hockey team.
Few expressed surprise that they were planning marriage at their age. "I think she's pretty responsible by keeping the baby," said Weston Patrick, 17, whose mother, Judy Patrick, was Palin's deputy mayor in Wasilla."
Yes – mea culpa. I had a bad source of info and I was wrong about the father of the child.
And I don't disagree that the two are doing the right thing by getting married and raising the child, though I do think it's a sad and tough way to start a marriage.
I am not throwing rocks at a 17-year-old pregnant girl. I feel very sorry for her, in fact. I feel most sorry that she could not talk with her mom about becoming sexually active and perhaps do something to prevent a pregnancy.
My mother married very young (16) and was a mother by the age of 17. She finally admitted that she married my dad (they are still together after 54 years), that she married because she was ready to have sex – this was before the Pill. But she also says it was very tough going in the early years, as she was a child raising a child, and she would never want her grandchildren to experience the same.
Palin's grandchild will be a fine addition
to the family and I'm sure that the daughter
boyfriend/future husband are dealing with this
in a less neurotic way than the frothing
mouths on the left.
Affirming life, expecting the child to be
raised within the family if the family has the
means to deal with it is a fairly strong
value in this country even amongst people
that are not explicitly "pro-life".
The rage and pettiness coming out of the
usual suspects is really anti-white-natalism
coming to the surface. A bubbling hatred
of gentiles and their damnable urge to procreate.
Obama's dad was a bum, Clinton's dad was
a bum. It seems like Palin and her husband
are going to do what it takes to keep
this young man (Levi?) to upholding his paternal responsibility. That's a common
sense approach and a conservative one.
If Bristol were Kennedy she'd be alone in
a Swiss convent now until the bambino came.
Other politicians would resolve it with a
trip to PP.
"More evidence that Palin is a primitive who shouldn't be this close to the White House."
Spoken like a true member of the eastern establishment.
Tracy: "And let's do the math, people. Bristol is 17. The father of the child is 26."
Are your sure Bristol's boyfriend is 26? Today's LA Times says the boyfriend played his last hockey game for Wasilla high school this past February. That's awfully old to still be in high school. The story also mentions his photo in the same Wasilla high school yearbook as Bristol's. From such circumstantial evidence it would seem he ought to be similar in age to Bristol.
"There's a big difference here you don't seem to grasp: Barack Obama's mom never sought to become first in line for the presidency of the USA and Commander-in-Chief of the military.
Here's one you don't grasp. It isn't Bristol who is seeking to become first in line for the presidency of the USA and Commander-in-Chief. It's her mother.
"A ten-hour trip after amniotic fluid starts leaking. Some judgment."
A lot of people have made this argument. Yet if she had aborted the baby instead of getting on the plane, they wouldn't say a thing. Aborting Down's Syndrome babies–hey, no problem!
White women getting together with White men and making beautiful White Christian babies is a wonderful thing. We need more of this sort of activity and the left is scared the Palins might be starting a trend.
