Remember how the west condemned Russia's attacks on South Ossetia in Georgia? What is the Israeli policy in Gaza? Here is John Mearsheimer writing two weeks ago on TPM:
As [Avraham] Burg makes clear in his book,
today's Israelis are a hard-nosed lot who have contempt for the
Palestinians and do not trust them enough to give them a state of their
own. And he sees this situation getting worse, not better, over time.
So, if there is no two-state solution and Israel continues building a Greater Israel by expanding the settlements and road networks in the West Bank and keeping the Palestinians in Gaza locked up in a giant cage, where does Israel end up? What is the happy ending to this story?
It seems to me that there is no happy ending. Greater Israel will
either have to engage in massive ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians
to remain a democratic and Jewish state, or it will become an apartheid
state, as Olmert predicted...
Mearsheimer's observations are accurate (two-state solution necessary but impossible with the current Israeli political consciousness – he neglected the role of the Palestinians which is alternately accepting and violently hating), but old, and not all that informative. Good, to be reminded though.
His most relevant comment is why aren't American Jews commenting?
One reason:
1. There is no obvious good alternative.
The oft-stated assertion by the left is that in the absence of injustice, justice will emerge.
But, Israelis and American Jews hear of (accurately) of not justice in response to injustice, but of injustice in response to injustice.
And, in that formula "never again" is better than opening one's doors to terror.
Hamas shelling towns in the southern Negev is not perceived of as resistance to a blockade, but as terror on civilians.
Sderot is not only the home of Sharon's ranch (and the ballsiness it represents). Its also the home of the Israeli open rock scene. American anarchists don't know that.
The ART of dissent, rather than the muscle of dissent, is in designing a path that yeilds peace, not a pendulum.

Yes, Arabs only understand and respect power. An argument with a long tradition that needs to be repeated over and over again.
As they are not only Israel's enemies but plan in fact to take over the planet. Where again, have we heard this before?
