Azmi Bishara is dead-on correct.
Algeria did in 1991 what the U.S. and Israel did in 2006 after the Palestinian elections — nullified a democratic election won by an Islamist party. Result: 250,000 Algerians dead in a protracted civil war. The parallels in Gaza are becoming obvious.
The U.S. and Israel have labeled Hamas a terrorist organization. Right. Well, until earlier this year, the African National Congress, which has governed South Africa since the 1994 multiracial elections, also was labeled a terrorist organization. It did in fact have a communist-funded, terrorist past, but the responsibilities of governing brought it within the fold of legality and statesmanship.
Israel and the U.S. imagine that they can ignore these pertinent historical precedents and prevail by main force. Their strategic error is not realizing that the crumbling U.S. economy is no longer wealthy enough to fund such reckless adventurism.
