For the first time in her life, a Palestinian-American woman feels solidarity from other Americans

"Seven" is the pseudonym we gave to a Palestinian-American youth whose politics were formed when she was 7 and saw her grandfather punched by an Israeli soldier as her father and brother looked on helplessly. One of the most important stories this website has ever told. Seven went to the movies this weekend.

I saw "Sin Nombre" over the weekend, you should watch that. It's about a family from El Salvador making their way through Mexico to get the U.S. and their encounter with the Mara Salvatrucha gang. It's about poverty, poor Mexicans joining gangs, and struggle. Very sad. Anyway, at the theater they also showed a preview for a movie called "The Lemon Tree" about Arabs about to get their orchards f---ed by the Israelis. It was interesting how quiet the audience got, then people started clapping. Clapping because it was a preview about that topic. Only time I ever felt solidarity with people in the U.S.

At the Lemon Tree link cited in the post, not once is the word occupation used. Intead, "It's a film about people who are trapped in a political situation".

  2. 7 says:

BP, I don't know anything about the movie other than what I saw during the preview trailer which I found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIoowHIpUT0

I could be wrong because I haven't seen the movie yet but the description that Phil chose from that website doesn't *feel* like it reflects what I saw in the preview.

    But that's not the point!

    :)

The preview trailer seems a bit too sympathetic to the Israelis including the soldiers. But we'll take what we can get.

    Also,

The Lemon Tree is not a "peace" film. Nor is it a war movie. The Lemon Tree merely represents daily life as it really is in Israel where we do all we can to defend our civilian population from terror attacks. And life in Palestine, where innocent Arabs are caught up in a Web of conflict between Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah whose only wish is to destroy Israel.
….and every democratic nation stops the vile and barbaric media incitement against Israel and the Jews

Here we have the standard memes of Israeli defense and "irrational hatred." The conflict is often boiled down into irrationalities if occupation and land displacement are omitted. The victim narrative moves on.

I wonder what Palestinians think when they see Israelis on film pretending to give a damn about anyone other than themselves…

  6. JWells says:

The production credits include the Israeli Ministry of Education and Sport. Some might recall that the previous Israeli education minister, Yuli Tamir, is a member of Peace Now. She approved a history textbook for Arab students that referred to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War as the nakba, which caused quite a stir. Perhaps promoting this movie was another decision of hers?

  7. Citizen says:

    Thanks JWells, for that info.
    It offers tangible hope.

  8. I cannot overemphasize that those of us outside the Zionist system are destined for an economic Nakba unless we take action here against the Zionists among us.

I dunno, somehow I think the imprimatur of the Israeli government is most likely a bad sign.

What we have here is another example of Jews speaking on behalf of the Palestinian people. No matter how high their IQ, I'd still rather hear the real thing.

"What we have here is another example of Jews speaking on behalf of the Palestinian people."–D.

Considering that Americans have been through years of Zionist brainwashing which cannot be undone over night, we have a long ways to go before Americans as a majority will reach a true and honest understanding of the Palestinian plight.

We can appreciate any progress being made in regards to the understanding of the Palestinian plight, while remaining skeptical as to the true intentions behind such movies when it has connections to Zionists since they usually have ulterior motives. Humanizing Israelis in the context of Israel's wars and occupations would be one of their motives in making and supporting such films….

Ah, the theatre was dark, so less danger of being seen.

I bet the clappers took surreptitious looks around, to see if it was safe.

Then the nervous clapping began, and just as quickly ended.

Some peed their pants from fear.

After that, they will tell their children that back in 2009, they have protested against the Israeli lobby which destroyed this country and that's why their children need to live in a third world nation – the USofA.

  12. Mooser says:

"I bet the clappers took surreptitious looks around, to see if it was safe."

How well I know that look!

  13. Thom says:

    @Joachim Martillo

Better watch it or the Nazis will sue you for plagiarism.

Really, if you are going to rip off someone else's work, it takes more to disguise it than substituting in synonyms like "take action here against" for "kill" and "Zionists" for "Jews".

You get an F for plagiarizing.

thom, the israelis own all the copyrights of the nazis…

Why am I the first comment to appear here in this thread? And why does it say I will be the first to comment? I earlier read lots of comments published here.

  17. Sarah says:

Joel Leyden, in his review of The Lemon Tree, is being very dishonest. He is suggesting that the problems Palestinians face could be corrected by Palestinians advocating for themselves in Israel's courts. This is, of course, entirely false. Palestinians have been trying to get remedies for what is being done to them in the Israeli courts, for many years, and it has accomplished nothing.

  18. Israel Court says:

Witty knows this, but he pretends otherwise.

  19. dance says:

It's a great movie. I saw it at the Perth film festival in March. I'm glad to hear of the solidarity in the audience.
