As an American Jew, I was taught to go all gooey-eyed at the thought of Israel…
–David Brooks in a column on his twelfth trip to the Holy Land where he says that the Palestinians are the obstacle to peace and of course says not a word about the occupation.
Most American Jews have never been to Israel. For my part, my parents did not teach me to go "gooey-eyed" at the thought of Israel.
I wish I'd known about this level of Israel-identification when Brooks was writing about WASPs in his Bobos book, or pushing the Iraq war, or dismissing as feverish fantasy Walt and Mearsheimer's belief that the Israel lobby played a role in the Iraq war.

David Brooks is not a stupid man, but he certainly is blind.
Growing up attending Sunday School in a conservative Protestant church in Brooklyn, I was also gooey-eyed about Israel. Moses, Joshua, Elijah, David. Those were my heroes. I remember cheering for the Israeli army with my Jewish classmates in 1967. Then I visited Israel and the West Bank in the early 2000s. I drove the roads that only Palestinians are permitted to drive. Watched sewage flow down from hilltop settlements to Palestinian villages. Stood at checkpoints while young Israeli soldier boys pointed their rifles at you. Visited with Palestinian in their homes.
That's the trip David Brooks should have taken, and the goo would have quickly dried up from his eyes, like it has for so many Americans who have visited the West Bank.
It would help if you posted the full quote.
"As an American Jew, I was taught to go all gooey-eyed at the thought of Israel, but I have to confess, I find the place by turns exhausting, admirable, annoying, impressive and foreign."
The problem is not that Phil has his opinion's or his biases, everyone does. The problem is that Phil is dishonest, and uses his dishonesty to level personal attacks about a writer's integrity.
brooks is still gooey eyed re israel. phil's portion of the quote is not deception.
brooks is deception. he does know the full truth and does not care.
the point that i take from that quote is that many american jews from a young age are indoctrinated into associating a self-identity that is essentially a religious identification to a forced identification with a piece of land in the middle east when actually and historically no such association exists.
an haaretz article makes this point in writing about professor shlomo sand's work:
In this work, the author attempts to prove that the Jews now living in Israel and other places in the world are not at all descendants of the ancient people who inhabited the Kingdom of Judea during the First and Second Temple period. Their origins, according to him, are in varied peoples that converted to Judaism during the course of history, in different corners of the Mediterranean Basin and the adjacent regions. Not only are the North African Jews for the most part descendants of pagans who converted to Judaism, but so are the Jews of Yemen (remnants of the Himyar Kingdom in the Arab Peninsula, who converted to Judaism in the fourth century) and the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe (refugees from the Kingdom of the Khazars, who converted in the eighth century).
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/966952.html
this gooey-eyed indoctrination from a young age to a piece of land called israel helps to partly explain the reticence many jews in the position of editors in major publications to censor critical views in regards to israel.
The Khazar nonsense again. It was disproven by genetic studies.
Wikipedia:
"Recent genetic research studies have largely disproven the main thesis of The Thirteenth Tribe. For example, a 2000 study of haplotypes by Hammer et al indicates that the Y chromosomes of most Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews are of Middle Eastern origin, containing mutations that are also common among Palestinians and other Middle Eastern peoples, yet are uncommon in the general European population. These results strongly suggest that most male ancestors of the Ashkenazi Jews can be traced primarily to the Middle East.[8]
A second study (2006) by Behar et al, based on haplotype analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), also indicates that about 40% of the current Ashkenazi population is descended matrilineally from just four women. These four "founder lineages" were "likely from a Hebrew/Levantine mtDNA pool" originating in the Near East in the first and second centuries CE.[9]"

If you're up for it, make sure to do it today, because it will be much less likely to be published if you wait.
julian, if we go by genetics, forget about being this or that as we're all africans. researchers say that humans alive today could share common ancestry with a being in Africa who lived about 120,000 to 220,000 years ago.
Many American Jews wished to be perceived as white so long as white privilege abounded; now, the reversal is taking place before our eyes, in both cases. It's just another aspect of the practical question, in this case in a political-cultural context:" Is it good for the Jews? "First of all, and most importantly, is it good for the
person raising the question.)
As Mexicans demography expands, and whites search for native-American roots in their family
tree to avoid their bottom rung government benefits slot, many Jews have their own practical
epiphany. No sense in being white. Try to pass for black, Latino, or Jewish. Maybe, back in your family tree, when the chinaman met the irishman on the RR track, they became buddies and
and so you're really part oriental?
Adam and Eve are whatever color you are, of course.

Joshua
Thank you Joshua, for having the intellectual courage and the honesty to admit that the Jews of Israel are killing their closest living genetic relatives. I agree with you, it's another case of an induced mass insanity. Coming from all over the world to kill and steal from the people they should embrace as brothers.
If you have any other explanation for the Israelis conduct, I'd sure like to hear it, but thanks for recognising the essential insanity of their actions.
I'm sorry, it was "Julian" not "Joshua" who directed us to the essential insanity of Zionism. Thanks, Julian!
@ "It was disproven by genetic studies."
Here we ask whether phylogenetic analysis, based on highly resolved mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogenies can discern among maternal ancestries of the Diaspora.
Unlike the previously reported pattern observed among Ashkenazi Jews, the numerically major portion of the non-Ashkenazi Jews, currently estimated at 5 million people and comprised of the Moroccan, Iraqi, Iranian and Iberian Exile Jewish communities showed no evidence for a narrow founder effect, which did however characterize the smaller and more remote Belmonte, Indian and the two Caucasus communities.

Ancestry Testing Has Limitations, Genetics Society Warns

This paper is the one I recall from a few years back. It shows that Y chromosome haplotypes of Palestinians are very closely related to Jewish Y haplotypes (smack bang in the centre of the the Jewish in fact).
This paper looks at mitochondrial DNA sequences (so this traces matrilineal descent unlike the one above which is obviously patrilineal). This one actually support the notion of a long standing matrilineal definition of Jewishness since there are only a few founders. Hoever, those founders are not closely related, so it argues against a single founder population that would be expected if the whole Jewish population were descended from Abraham – no surprise there – and argues more for a period of proselytising of Judaism.

It is obvious which of the two antagonists are Abel and Cain, and why that myth endures.
julian's genetic argument: present day jews have a historial connection to the land of israel because of modern day jews have a genetic connection with the ancient people living in jerusalem. this genetic argument is also being used to justify entitlement to the land.
well, let's carry this argument to its logical conclusion. since humanity originated in africa and all of our genes can be traced to that common ancesor, i'm packing my bags to go to africa and lay claim to some prized real estate there as mine.
@Julian
TY for pointing out that zionists of today are picking up where Josef Mengele left his work.
The only conclusion you can draw from the project is that the genetic makeup of jews is inseparable from the population in which it lives.
Big surprise.
Personally I'm more interested in the philosophical aspect of hereditary religion. Do chromosomes change when people convert ? Is it possible to isolate the jewish gen ? (intrachromosomal ghetto)
Keep up the good work Julian

Oh Chrissy, that was harsh, man, harsh! Tell me, Chrissila, what am I losing? The wonderful feeling of accomplishment that comes from vicarious brutality? The mystical satisfaction you get from knowing you have lived down to every anti-Semitic stereotype?
But I best not continue, Chris. Mondoweiss has asked us not to be "viscious" to the poor degraqded ziocaine addicts who frequent the site. Misplaced pity, if you asked me, but if Phil wants to nurse his own vipers, that's his business.

I cannot overemphasize that ethnic Ashkenazim in Stolen and Occupied Palestine are racist murderous genocidal invaders, interlopers, and thieves, whom all decent people whether Jewish or non-Jewish should hate and despise because they murdered Arab Palestine and torture the remnants right before our eyes.

The year is 1988:
Bush Panelist Out After Reports of Anti-Jewish Ties
By RICHARD L. BERKE, Special to the New York Times
The campaign of Vice President Bush dismissed a member of a panel formed to enlist support among ethnically diverse groupings late today amid allegations by Jewish and Nazi-hunting organizations that he was one of three panelists with anti-Semitic involvements or links to fascist groups.
Mark Goodin, a campaign spokesman, said the panel member, Jerome A. Brentar, was dismissed after it was learned that he had been active in efforts to defend John Demjanjuk, who is appealing a sentence of death imposed in April by an Israeli court. It found that he had committed atrocities as a guard at the Treblinka camp in Nazi-occupied Poland.
Mr. Goodin said Mr. Brentar's ''association with John Demjanjuk put him at odds with Vice President Bush.'' As for the two other members in question, he added, ''We have absolutely no substantiation at this point of any of these charges.''
Reached today in Cleveland, where he is a travel agent, Mr. Brentar said: ''I could have been an athiest. I could have been a polygamist. I could have been anything else and questions wouldn't have been asked. And now because I helped a poor victim, I'm everything under the sun.'' Raised Money for Demanjuk.
Mr. Brentar said he traveled extensively to gather evidence in the case of Mr. Demanjuk, a one-time Cleveland auto worker, and also delivered speeches and raised money on Mr. Demanjuk's behalf.
The panel in question, Mr. Bush's Coalition of American Nationalities, is a volunteer group intended to build support for the campaign among ethnic groups. Details about the panel emerged in a article published today in Washington Jewish Week, a Washington area Jewish newspaper with a circulation of 20,000.
The article was based on published news accounts and circumstantial evidence about past activities of members of the panel. The reports were substantiated by officials of Jewish organizations, Nazi-hunting groups and Government officials, according to Larry Cohler, who wrote the article.
Examining the Backgrounds
Officials at the Simon Weisenthal Center in Los Angeles, which tracks Nazi war criminals, and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, an umbrella grouping for 60 Jewish agencies in the New York area, independently examined the backgrounds of the three men on the 88-member panel.
''There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that these three individuals have expressed sympathies with Nazism, with fascism,'' said Michael S. Miller, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council.
In addition to Mr. Brentar, a Croatian-American who has also been active in groups that deny the existence of the Holocaust, Mr. Miller and Mr. Cooper supported Jewish Week's descriptions of the other two men, Florian Galdau and Philip Guarino.
Mr. Galdau, an honorary chairman of the panel, is a Rumanian Orthodox priest described in the Jewish Week article as the New York chief of the Iron Guard, a Rumanian anti-Semitic, pro-Nazi movement of the Nazi era.
In one of its publications, the Weisenthal Center listed him as a member of the Iron Guard in the United States, and said the list had been sent to the Justice Department's Office of Special Investigations. According to the Jewish Week article, several former members of St. Dumitru, which was Mr. Galdau's church in Manhattan, said they left the congregation ''because of Galdau's Iron Guard-oriented activities.'' No one answered the phone at the church today. On Fascists in Italy
Mr. Guarino is a vice chairman of the Bush campaign panel and is a former Roman Catholic priest who is described by the Jewish and Nazi-hunting groups as a member of P-2, a group in Italy led by Licio Gelli, a known Fascist with whom Mr. Guarino is said to be very close. P-2 is now believed defunct, according to members of the Wiesenthal organization.
Another co-chairman is Laszlo Pasztor, a Hungarian-American who, as a young man, according to the article, served in Hungary's wartime Government as a junior envoy to Berlin, but has since said that he regrets his involvement.
G.O.P. Says He Denies It
Kathryn Murray, director of communication for the Republican Party, said she spoke with Mr. Guarino today and he said that ''the allegations and the implications are totally false.'' She said he told her he had never been a member of the P-2 organization.
Mr. Goodin said the campaign organization was ''shocked by the allegations,'' but that it should not have been expected to ascertain every detail about prospective panel members in the screening process.
The Jewish Week article also said that ''the majority of the individuals Bush named as leaders of his ethinic coalition evidence no apparent extremism.''
Early today, before Mr. Brentar was dismissed, James A. Baker 3d, the Bush campaign chairman, said at a news conference that ''there is absolutely no room for anti-Semitism or bigotry of any sort in our campaign.'' Repeated efforts today to contact the other coalition members cited by Jewish Week were unsuccessful. Mr. Goodin said he did not have phone numbers of the appointees to the coalition and that he did not believe the campaign had gotten in touch today with the other coalition members whose backgrounds have been questioned.
Mr. Galdau has a nonpublished telephone number in Mount Vernon, N.Y. There was no answer today to calls to the New York church of which he was said to have been pastor.
Mr. Guarino, who lives in Washington, is not listed in its telephone directory. He did not return calls to his office at the Republican National Committee, where he is the party's senior citizen liaison representative, a full-time, salaried post.
In 1980, Mr. Guarino was a campaigner for a Congressional candidate in Kansas, but the campaign sent him back to Washington after he told a rally he had once had trouble collecting money from people of ''a different color.''
Mr. Pasztor did not return calls to his office today at the Free Congress Foundation, a conservative group here, nor did he respond to a message left at his home outside Pittsburgh.
In announcing the coalition Aug. 2, the Bush campaign said it ''will address issues of importance to Americans of many different nationalities across the country on behalf of the Vice President's campaign throughout the fall.'' Mr. Goodin said today that the coalition was ''largely ceremonial and symbolic.''
Several Jewish groups denounced the Bush campaign for the appointments, as did five Jewish House members, all Democrats, at a news conference here today at which they said they were putting their complaints in a letter to Mr. Bush. The five were Representatives Charles E. Schumer of Brooklyn, Barney Frank of Massachusetts, Mal Levine of California, Martin Frost of Texas and Sam Gejdenson of Connecticut.

An exception [to the media's downplaying of the story] was the Philadelphia Inquirer, which featured a series of investigative pieces documenting the Nazi link. A front-page lead story detailed the sordid past of men like Florian Galdau, the national chairman of Romanians for Bush, who defended convicted war criminal Valerian Trifa; Radi Slavoff, co-chairman of Bulgarians for Bush, who arranged a 1983 event in Washington that honored Austin App, author of several texts denying the existence of the Nazi Holocaust; Phillip Guarino, chairman of the Italian-American National Republican Federation, who belonged to a neofascist masonic lodge implicated in terrorist attacks in Italy and Latin America; and Bohdan Fedorak, vice chairman of Ukrainians for Bush, who was also a leader of a Nazi collaborationist organization involved in anti-Polish and anti-Jewish wartime pogroms.

Salient anti-Semitism is anti-Semitism with a program. One tenet of that program is the delegitimization of the Jewish national movement — about the only national movement these people don't seem to thrill to. Another tenet — sometimes disguised, sometimes not — is that a just society would not have individuals from any group underrepresented or overrepresented in its positions of prestige and influence. This attack on talent was the central doctrine of the politics of resentment for which civilization (and the Jews) have already paid dearly. It's strange how some Democrats so alert to rather antique and anemic forms of anti-Semitism among the Republicans, haven't noticed far more virulent forms in their own contemporary habitat.
