Were those Mossad assassins wearing tennis outfits in Dubai?

The team of assassins who killed Hamas arms dealer Mahmoud al Mabhuoh wore tennis outfits in order to avoid detection. The Dubai police who just released video, photographs and the names of the alleged team of killers consider the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad a leading suspect in the murder plot.

The Israeli newspaper, Ha’aretz, did not miss the irony when it reported that simultaneous with these police revelations, the Israeli tennis star Shahar Peer landed in The United Arab Emirates (UAE) where she is competing in the Dubai Tennis Championship. The headline in the Hebrew version of Ha’aretz read, “Without Costume Disguise: Shahar Peer Accompanied by 16 Security Guards Plays Tennis In Dubai.”

The Dubai police have released the names and pictures of 11 people they claim were members of the hit team. According to the Israeli news media, five to seven of the names are shared by Israeli citizens. One of those names, “Adam Melvyn Mildiner” belongs to a UK-born man who lives near Jerusalem. Ha’aretz reports that the picture that Dubai authorities released did not appear to match a picture on a social networking site belonging to Mildiner, though “it had some similar features.” Mildiner vehemently denies that he was part of a plot to murder Mabhuoh.

Shahar, who is currently ranked 22nd in the world among female tennis players, was denied entry into the Dubai tournament last year, apparently due to her nationality. The refusal to allow the Israeli to participate was a cause célèbre among Israeli Jews and the actions of the UAE were strongly criticized by the Women’s World Tennis Association (WTA) who levied a stiff fine against the Dubai organizers.   The tournament officials claimed, according to the British daily, The Independent, that Peer’s presence "would have antagonised [their] fans who have watched live television coverage of recent attacks in Gaza."

The assassination of Mahmoud al Mabhuoh was widely applauded in the Israeli media. The Israelis claim that he was responsible for two separate widely-publicized murder/kidnappings of their soldiers in the 90s. He is also reported to have been a major Hamas arms merchant. The comments of Hamas officials, who gave Mabhouh a martyrs’ funeral in Syria while pledging revenge against Israel, tend to validate these claims.  The Israel government, as is their custom, refused to comment on whether their spy agency participated in the Dubai attack.

If the Mossad is found to be involved in the Mabhouh assassination, it will be the biggest embarrassment for the spy agency since its botched attempt to kill the current Hamas leader, Khaled Meshal in Jordan in the 90s. Prime Minister Gordon Brown has vowed to investigate the use of British passports in the assassination. The Dubai police chief says it will seek the arrests in the case, soon.

Shahar Peer is playing beyond all expectations. She has advanced to the fourth round by defeating the top seed, Caroline Wozniacki and is now considered to be a contender to win the championship.

It remains to be seen if this week will be considered a victory or a defeat for Israeli public relations. The outcome hinges on the results of criminal investigations in Great Britain and Dubai, the forehand of the young tennis player and the ability of her 16-man security team to keep her safe.

And that wraps’er up. By Friday, British newspapers will have forgotten all about this and Israel will resume treating other nations, especially friendly nations, with disdain and contempt. And judging by the USS Liberty attack, passport forgery is the least of any of those countries’ concerns.

I seem to recall quite a few incidents involving Israeli murderers running wild in Sweden, New Zealand, Jordan, Cyprus and Switzerland. At least in Jordan’s case, they bothered using Canadian passports. I’m sure the King and Queen of Jordan and the Commonwealth respectively, approved.

I wonder how Israel will react if its own officials and/or citizens start getting assassinated. If an arrest warrant in London is enough to rile Tel-Aviv, imagine what an assassination would do.

    • FROM ANTIWAR: “…Britain in particular is up in arms over the calling, as members of the hit squad used forged British passports containing data stolen from Britons who were in Israel at the time. Today, the British Foreign Office summoned the Israeli ambassador to seek an explanation, and Prime Minister Gordon Brown is calling for a full police investigation into the assassination…”

Some UK media made a big point of pointing out that Foreign Office did not summoned the Israeli Ambassador, merely called him.

At least one report said he was “invited.”

        • FROM TIMESONLINE , Miliband denies going soft on Israel over ‘Mossad’ killing, 02/18/10:
(EXCERPTS) Britain has been under pressure to take a tough line with Israel, which has refused to confirm or deny whether the Mossad, its intelligence service, was involved in the plot.
Ron Prosor spent less than 20 minutes in a meeting at the Foreign Office with Sir Peter Ricketts, the Permanent Secretary who heads Britain’s diplomatic service.
As he left Whitehall, Mr Prosor, Israel’s most senior envoy to Britain, stressed that he had been “invited” rather than summoned to the meeting, signalling that it was not a diplomatic dressing down.
“I was unable to add any additional information to Sir Peter Ricketts’ request,” he told journalists afterwards….
…David Cameron, the Tory leader, said: “At the very least we need some assurances about the future to make sure that whatever has happened in the past this can’t happen again*, and I would expect the Government to ask some pretty tough questions.”….

          * lol!

Dumb Israelis waltz around the world whining, “why oh why do they hate us?” Gee wiz, let’s think this one through; could it possibly have something to do with your government’s thuggish and criminal behavior? Just brainstorming here, you know.

Now, I don’t condone killing any human being. But if the guy was indeed responsible for the “kidnapping” and killing of two Israeli soldiers, Israel could have brought him to trial. Heck, it has kidnapped Vanunu and others to bring them to trial.

And since military targets are considered “fair game” in armed struggle between nations then why is Israel allowed to bomb Palestinians left and right and when its own is met with the same fate it whines like a little child?

Surely, if that’s the kind of world Israel and its leadership seek to live in – a world where only the strong survive, no holds barred – then DON’T bitch and moan when you are treated to a dose of your own medicine. DON’T.

Dubai should have deported the Israeli tennis player. But, I guess, even Dubai is run by a bunch of hacks, suckling on Uncle Sam’s teet like everyone else in that neighborhood.

Seriously Ira, a mere ‘embarrassment’ you reckon?

That’s a little out of touch if you ask me.

If mossad is indeed behind this, then it means that Natanyahu okayed the op including it’s shoddy details. This means that Natanyahu would personally be accountable in the courts of several countries.

You also forgot to account for the total PR DISASTER – you can bet your white tennis socks that several million Brits, French, German, and Irish nationals now overnight hate Israel for using their passports to commit international gangsterism on third party territory.

Yet you want to go on and on about Israeli sportspersons being personas non-gratas in the Arab world – why is that? You think people in UAE during Gaza didn’t want anything to do with anything Israeli because they’re anti-blah blah?

If it is the mossad behind this and I was a Jew in the diaspora, I would now think twice about moving to Israel and having my ID stolen by no less than the secret service.

I am baffled by the idea that Hamas needs an arms dealer.
According to Israel’s hasbara, Hamas is backed, bankrolled and armed by Iran.
Unless he was arm dealing by selling arms, which, surely, was a good thing.

Israeli Mafia Mossad is all Israel. But the difference this time they committed their crime in a foreign country which use advanced technology to track them down. Israel is mocking countries sovereignty and still playing the victim card. I applaud Dubai police for their professionalism, and i hope they will impose new restrictions on Europeans nationalities part of this crime so the European countries pay what their ally Israel is doing.

One of the main reasons I stay in this fight is the trickle-down effect on Western political and Constitutional thought.
Even in countries like mine there is fair proportion of the kind of thinking I got in an email today:

“As for the world’s hysteria about 11 MOSSAD soldiers taking out some Hamas leader committed to the destruction of Israel it’s the best news I’ve read for a while. Right now the west is terrified of Islam – time to reverse the equation. The Israelis will do it “

That otherwise rational people can abandon basic principles of civilized society so easily concerns me greatly.

I suspect Israel will weather the blowback like so many times before.

I watched Bill Moyers video on “Secret Wars” the other day and couldn’t help but be impressed by how sensational and scandalous the Watergate and Iran/Contra stories were at the time and, in retrospect, how evil the overthrow of Arbenz and Allende.

People forget very quickly. Netanyahu knows this. He has already survived being caught red-handed in an attempted assassination:

Ten days in Haiti, wave Elie Weisel at ‘em, crank up the “Vibrant Democracy” CD.

It’ll blow over. If Israel can survive Gaza with its Western Alliances intact, a little extra-judicial murder on foreign soil probably won’t amount to much.

    Quite depressing really.

  14. The Mossad assassination team were originally suspected of being part of the entourage of Uzi Landau, the first Israeli minister (Infrastructure) ever to visit the UAE, but it seems they actually waited until he’d gone home before they arrived and struck, arriving quickly from different directions on different planes, and leaving the same way, with totally false passports.

The fact that many of them carried tennis gear means nothing very much, and certainly doesn’t have anything to do with the other coincidental visit, of Shahar Peer. What else would you expect them to carry, as a large team assembling in a hot country? Skis? Surfboards? Lugers? To Dubai?

The Mafia used to carry cello cases to show they were really just Italiano musicians.

This use of faked passports may just tip a small balance. Several (7) of the Brits whose identities were stolen are residents in Israel , and they are not very happy. The British government may well stand up to try and protect them. If they were US citizens, you would see this all over the front pages.

One of the suspects was named by Dubai police on Monday as Melvyn Adam Mildiner. Yesterday Mr Mildiner, a British-born computer specialist who lives in Israel, said he had never been to Dubai and still had his passport. He added: “I’m looking into what I can do to try to sort things out and clear my name. I don’t know how this happened or who chose my name or why.”

In Austria, the interior ministry said it had launched an investigation into the suspected use of at least seven mobile phones with pre-paid Austrian chips by Mabhouh’s killers. The killers reportedly never made direct phone calls to each other but dialled into a communications centre in Austria – described by Dubai as the “command centre” for the operation.

MY COMMENT: Yes, but they weren’t U.S. citizens, were they? This despite there being plenty of Israeli ‘dual nationals’ with U.S. passports. But then, the U.S. gives Israel all those billions of dollars every year. If the U.K. would throw a few measly billion £s Israel’s way each and every year, the Mossad would probably use a different country’s passport (until the new ‘mark’ coughed up a sufficient ‘per annum’ monetary offering).

It will be lost in cyber space, as anticipated by Israel-AIPAC–after gaining no toe-hold in the US-AIPAC MSM press.

And this will continue; Israel-AIPAC makes a better cello case.

This affair seems odd. The Mossad clown car rolls into center ring in Dubai, yet Dubai authorities did nothing to interfere with Mabhouh’s murder? There must have been some prior contact between Israel and Dubai for Mossad to operate so brazenly. An opportunity to get rid of a rival arms merchant and embarass Israel at the same time?

On another point, if Melvyn Mildiner and others are truly innocent and ignorant of the coopting of their identity, but wind up suffering reprisals, what will Israel do then?
