The argument that the New York Times has been pushing that children who throw stones at occupying Israeli soldiers are important evidence of the violence of the Palestinian protests (rather than impulsive angry resistance) is echoed (what a surprise) by a new Israeli term: "popular terror," to label these bad children who throw stones. Journalist Didi Remez picks up the Maariv story on the IDF's use of dogs against these kids as a "non-lethal" option.
"Disturbances have increased throughout Judea and Samaria in recent months," says Maariv; thus the IDF will turn to the "Oketz dog." Oketz is an army unit, with the charmingly choppy resonance of totalitarian names across Europe back in the day. I tell you: this is a society in deep spiritual crisis, now in an apartheid struggle, no longer on the verge of one. But expect the U.S. press to catch up to this story in 3 years, when it is too late to avert worse bloodshed.

Yet another thing that would be considered a crime in any Western civilized state (and most Eastern civilized states) that is “business as usual” in Israel.
I suppose that the dogs won’t be deployed on the stone-throwing haredim in Jerusalem, the “religious terrorists.”
It’s noteworthy that Israel uses the “terrorist” label to characterise what is clearly civil disobedience and lawful protest. For Israel, there have to be terrorists, nothing else justifies them.
The use of attack dogs on civilians is a known nazi method, admired and employed by the IDF.
That must be why it was used at Abu Graib.
A great new IDF unit that will help minimize Palestinian deaths.
Nothing Israel does is ever good for Israel haters.
Sicking dobermans on children is “great” and “new,” huh.
Didn’t know eeeeeeeee and the IDF were doing everything in their power to help Palestinian longevity.
How about ending the occupation instead?
Getting the hell off land that doesn’t belong to you is the way to minimise Palestinians deaths.
It will happen. Negotiation takes time. We will all have to compromise. Until then, if the dogs are successful very quickly there will be many less Palestinian kids on the streets throwing stones. That is a win win for everybody. I always thought it cowardly that Palestinian society sent kids to do that. Leave the kids at home and come out yourself.
What’s cowardly is the use of attack dogs on underage civilians.
Sure looks to me like the IDF are scared of sticks and stones.
Kids come out of their prison ghettos not because their parents send them out to throw stones against their oppressors, but because they are in need of sun and distraction and are met with harassment from settlers and soldiers with M-16′s.
Those who take their children to protests are showing them the struggle for freedom from oppression! These children witness their people beaten and targeted with tear gas canisters, rubber bullets and live rounds.
The only cowards are the soldiers who are afraid of kids chasing a foreign occupier with “freedom” stones.
איך זה שאין לך מקלדת בעברית
Riight, calling out the dogs on children is saving lives, suuure. And since when did the IDF care squat about Palestinian lives?
Avi,
Why do you use ad-hominem attacks?
Didn’t Shmuel tell you these are not allowed on this site?
Do you read Hebrew eee?
Avi,
You have just proven that you do NOT read Hebrew.
What I typed above in Hebrew was a question asking you how come you don’t have a Hebrew keyboard.
Busted!!!!!!
You are a LIAR!!!
Avi,
You are desperate. Of course I understood what you wrote.
Of course it is an ad-hominem attack. How is the fact that I do not have a Hebrew keyboard related to the points I raised?
Tafsik kvar im a shtuyot shelcha. Ta’ane la’inyan ve-zehu.
I will repeat again. My elementary school is Golan in Ramat-Hasharon, then the middle school Alumim and then I went to Handasaim in Ramat-Aviv.
How about you? Where did you go to school?
It’s hard not to laugh sometimes.
I can’t think of an image MORE likely to cause outrage among moms and dads across the world than images and videos of the IDF setting attack dogs on children.
They’ll set the dogs on the photographers, then smash their cameras
They can try, and there will be another HUGE uproar about Israel and press freedom. In the end everybody will take a camera and some pics will still get out. Good subject for a viral email campaign.
Israel’s press freedom plunged about 40 places in 2009 and now the “only democracy” is rated 93rd in the world, worse than three neighbours: UAE, Lebanon and Kuwait. There’s still 70 or so countries with more restricted FOS: I say go for it Israel!
Look forward to plenty of reports that dogs are unleashed on children whether they are throwing stones or not. The stones are just the cover story, they will be used to tear children bodies apart.
Typical blood libel.
Typical irrelevant nonsense. Dogs can do what VR described. Do you deny that?
Avi,
When someone says that the IDF will use dogs to tear children bodies apart, that is a blood libel. If you cannot see that, you are really blind.
“When someone says that the IDF will use dogs to tear children bodies apart, that is a blood libel.”
Yes eee, the IDF is has much blood on it’s hands and more to come.
I find it rather staggering that eee considers anyone talking about IDF soldiers turning attack dogs loose on children to be libelous, but he doesn’t consider Israelis actually doing what is being described, to be a crime.
You know what? From now on, whenever Neocon nutters go criticizing brown people, I’m just gonna scream words like “Islamophabia!” and “Crusader!”. That way I will avoid having to answer any uncomfortable questions…..
Typical blood lust you mean.
History tells the tale of the use of dogs by colonials –
bloodhounds of balboa
The story never changes in the use of the dogs of conquest
If you go on youtube and type “settlers throwing rocks/stones at Palestinians”, you will come up with a slew of examples of both children and adults doing exactly this under the nose of IDF soldiers.
The use of dogs to terrorize children is a barbaric Nazi tactic. Seems to me someone is studying the Nazi Rulebook on how to handle the “problem” of Palestinians and their protests againsts human rights violations and crimes against humanity and how to control the ghetto children by intimidating and traumatizing them.
There is gentleman in Lawrenceville, GA, who’s name is Paul Henss, who has lots of experience in dog training for just such purposes.

Oketz is the Hebrew word for “Sting”, as in the sting of a scorpion or a hornet.
Where’s the Israeli PR force when you need it?
I am sure when all is said and done, the Israeli intellectuals will be sitting down and ruminating where they went wrong, and the suggestion will be that the name of this dog unleashing campaign was too “forceful” and aggressive, just like the failings of the Gaza offensive were pinned by some on its name, Operation Cast Lead.
Operation We Wish Hezbollah Were This Easy To Kill
Years ago, there was a labour lockout in Israel and the company hired guards with dogs to keep the workers out of the plant. There was a huge uproar, citing the terrible and obvious association with the Holocaust, and how such use of dogs against human beings in a Jewish state was inconceivable.
But those were only workers, and these are only Palestinians.
Shmuel,
Since then it has become clear that Israel must develop as many non-lethal weapons as it can. Yes, sometimes these weapons are abused, but in most cases they don’t kill you and are effective. If the dogs are effective, there will be less Palestinian kids on the streets throwing stones. That is good for everybody.
If your military would have used dogs on the pregnant Afghan women, they would not have needed to gut them in order to get the bullets out.
“Yes, sometimes these weapons are abused, but in most cases they don’t kill you and are effective.”
Like white phsophorous. They don’t kill, but main for life. Very effective.
“If your military would have used dogs on the pregnant Afghan women, they would not have needed to gut them in order to get the bullets out.”
Yes, the Israelis will have to print some new T-shirts. Rather than one shot 2 kills next to a picture fo a pegnant Muslim woman, they can have “one chase, 2 dog meals”.
Much better than your t-shirt:
One shoot two kills and we do recycle the bullets.
How thoughtful of you!
eee: Effective trolls at least know their opponents. Shmuel is Israeli — although he lives in Europe — therefore “his military” is the Israeli Defense Forces, which he served in and about which he has enlightened us many times.
Mondoweiss is growing — over 1000 friends on Facebook — and we want better opposition. Please tell whoever is in charge that Mondoweiss deserves first-stringers. You, instead, should go sit under the bridge at a smaller website, and practice until you are good enough to debate Shmuel, Avi, Donald, David Samel, and our other well-informed commenters.
Again, how about getting the hell out of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
I don’t accept your answer from before “It will happen. Negotiation takes time.” It’s been 43 years, and 62 years for the ’48 refugees.
The occupation started before the stones. The occupation started before the rockets. The occupation started before the suicide bombings. The occupation started before the intifadas. The occupation started before the hijackings.
Enough with the “it will happen” bullshit. Just go.
Why do you consider it legitimate to use any weapon, whether lethal or merely painful and destructive, to prevent Palestinians, kids or adults from asserting their right to be in their own streets, villages or village land without Israeli soldiers telling them they can’t be there? Why do you insist that the Israeli soldiers should be patrolling Palestinian streets and setting attack dogs on kids?
Yes, the inalienable right of throwing rocks at soldiers.
Would you rather that the Palestinians welcome their ethnic cleansers by showering them with flowers, yonira?
they can throw all the rocks they want in the world, but actions have consequences.
Unless you’re Israeli, because then apparently you’re allowed to bomb as many hospitals as you like and even set fire to babies with phosphorous munitions and the rest of the world is expected to honor Israel’s “right” to slaughter civilians “in self defense.”
Ethan Bronner is probably working on a story right now describing the IDF as using new humane tactics against child terrorists versus the old ways of simply shooting them.

From Antony Loewenstein’s blog
“Here’s famed Israeli leftist and novelist David Grossman speaking at a rally in Sheikh Jarrah in Jerusalem on Friday. Whatever the criticisms directed at the organised Left in Israel – and there are many – Grossman’s words here are poignant and powerful:
I think that we are all beginning to grasp — even those who maybe don’t really want to — how 43 years ago, by turning a blind eye, by actively or passively cooperating, we actually cultivated a kind of carnivorous plant that is slowly devouring us, consuming every good part within us, making the country we live in a place that is not good to live in.”
