Some Israeli bloggers have taken down their posts re Anat Kam

Max Blumenthal has the latest on the Kamm/Blau case, translating the gag order for Anat Kam(m?) and describing the fear of reporting on the matter inside Israel:

The most notable piece of information is that Israel’s National and International Serious Crimes Unit spearheaded the investigation into Kam’s conduct. The involvement of this unit, which in the past has gone after Israeli journalists for traveling to designated enemy nations like Syria, and therefore seems primarily concerned with crimes committed abroad, raises the question of whether Kam leaked documents to reporters besides Blau who work for international papers.

While American bloggers like Richard Silverstein have been reporting on the Kam affair for weeks, some Israeli bloggers have taken down their posts, fearing that they could harm Kam’s defense — and possibly place themselves in danger — by provoking the Shin Bet and reactionary political elements. The fact that the contents of the gag order were not shown to anyone until tonight only added to the climate of confusion and fear.

There are exceptions to the blackout, however. The Israeli reporter Mya Guarneri has written about the Kam affair at The National, a foreign paper. And the scandal has received in-depth treatment from the Palestinian news service, Ma’an News, which recently lost a top editor, Jared Malsin (an American graduate of Yale University), when Israeli security services ordered his deportation on the grounds that he had published damaging reports about Israeli military conduct in the Occupied Territories. Besides a few vigilant Israeli bloggers, a Facebook page devoted to Kam’s case is hosting what blogger Didi Remez calls “a de facto civil disobedience campaign.”

Two major papers in Israel have tried to find their way around the gag order. Yedioth Ahronoth satirized the media blackout, submitting Judith Miller’s report about Kam to the military censor, then publishing a redacted version of the article (see it here). And Haaretz has run an interview with a former Supreme Court Justice, Dalia Dorner, who mocks the order as pointless in the age of the internet. “If the entire world knows about [the Kam affair],” Dorner said, “issuing a gag order is baseless.” However, the article does not mention Kam directly or describe the details of her case.

I simply cannot see how you presume to criticise Israelis. After all, they know nothing else, and if they have to learn anything else, it’ll be just like gassing them.
Besides, the whole world sucks, and if we Jews can’t get away with committing any evil that has been committed anywhere, in any era, you might as well just turn on the gas and stick our heads in the oven. (wait, I’m getting mixed up with what my MIL said when we got married. It’s not a crime to marry your MIL, is it?)

There Yonira, I’ve saved you the trouble of pleading ignorance as an excuse, After all, we “know nothing else”. But then Yoni, if you want to condemn Israelis like that, that they “know nothing else” be my guest. It’s tantamount to admitting that only dissolution of Israel will bring peace to the ME.

These sentiments seem to permeate throughout your post history on this website. You find human rights abuses perpetrated by Israel hard to read. Even when explained, you still find them hard to understand and you certainly don’t care because you’re not the one who has to give up one iota of anything should the status quo go on forever. The compromises and the brunt of the ongoing crisis are incurred by the Palestinians and to a much lesser degree by the Israelis – those who serve in the military. You, however, certainly have no physical contact with that conflict and stand to lose absolutely nothing either way.

In fact, many of Israel’s blind supporters in the US are of that mindset. They are more than willing to justify Israel’s actions even when Israel itself can’t and doesn’t justify its own actions. And they make outrageous and insane remarks from the safety of their American homes. Don’t forget to make the obligatory pilgrimage to Eretz Yisrael, by the way. Otherwise you’re not as Jewish as you think you are.

      I tell ya. The sacrifices people like you have to make….phhhh. Must be tough. {sarcasm}

“After all, she is accused of malfeasance for allegedly exposing a much greater crime, an illegal assassination that appeared to have been authorized at the highest levels of the IDF general command.” From Blumenthal post -

Essentially what this asks is simple – is Israel a democracy or a military dictatorship? This is what happens when you are given over to militarism, eventually the mantel of power ends up in the hands of the jack booted thugs.

However, did I detect a twinge of nervousness from Max when he mentioned the Iraq military action leak? He seemed to play up how different the US was, even though we know Wikileak is being eyeballed at this moment by the powers that be. Lets hope that all of Max’s lauding of the “difference” in the USA is not for naught.

    • Avi says:

From a legal standpoint, Israel has great flexibility in invoking national security measures, if not due to the six-decade self-imposed state of emergency, then certainly by lack of oversight.

The infrastructure in the US, coupled with the greater reliance of trade and commerce on the internet, limits the government and its ability to impose such drastic and sweeping measures. For example, it took the US government, represented by the NSA, months to coordinate eavesdropping and wiretapping efforts with the various telecommunications companies once the Patriot Act was passed. This is not to say that warrantless wiretaps are necessary as characterized by Bush and Obama, but the logistics behind setting up such large scale dragnet operations are rather complex when the system is complex and is maintained by different entities.

From a practical perspective, the difference is that Israel connects to the global network that is the internet via Europe. There is only ONE gateway into and out of Israel and the infrastructure is nationalized, so the government can easily and effectively block access to certain sites or monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. The US on the other hand is connected like the webs of a spider, branching off into Canada, the Caribbean, Asia, and Europe. Incidentally, Wikileaks have moved their operations to northern Europe; I believe it was Norway or Sweden, but I’m not certain on that specific detail.

Not so unthinkable in the US at all. Whistleblowers are still being punished. And the US SS can march into any office demanding confidential information about any person and the office is gagged from even mentioning the fact to the victim.

Blumenthal mentions the silence of the NYT and Bronner – this is a perfect case to demonstrate why Bronner’s son serving in the IDF makes him a hostage for Bronner’s cooperation and renders him unreliable. Suppose Bronner reported on this gag order and he got a call from the Shin Bet – “You know that son of yours? Too bad for him.”

      • isn’t it fascinating that Herzl’s homeland where ‘Jews’ would be safe is really a place where only zionists are safe.

Jews are in the same position they’ve always been, which is ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENT from the same position all peoples of all ethnicities, religions, customs, cultures, peopleocities have always been: there are dominators and there are the dominated, within groups as defined above, and between groups as defined above.

        • Chaos4700 says:

Like I keep saying, I don’t see any difference at all between Zionist principles of ethnic cleansing and Nazi principles of the same. Just because Israel hasn’t gotten as far as the gas chambers quite yet doesn’t mean it headed in that direction — we’ve all heard the Zionists on this blog go absolutely raving at the notion that Palestinians’ right of return be respected — because it will undo all of the purges of the “lesser species” that have been ongoing since 1948.

You don’t think people like yonira and Witty wouldn’t, given the choice, pick up an Uzi and slaughter a Palestinian family rather than let them return home, and sully their precious “Jewish homeland?” Read between the lines, people.

      • Michael Oren’s son is also a member of IDF or Israeli intelligence, don’t recall which (Oren mentioned it in a C Span interview around the time he was named US ambassador to Israel — or is it Israeli ambassador to the US? which way does that go? who DOES Oren represent?

I do recall that Oren told the interviewer, in a tone clearly intended to be ominous, that his son was deployed in a “highly confidential” situation.

White House mole? DoD influence-shaper? State Department insider?

The following bit of information is a complimentary addition to the gag order incident.

Wikileaks, who yesterday released gunship footage of Iraqi civilians being slaughtered by US forces, posted the following – albeit unrelated – document on their website in mid March concerning formal government efforts to squelch, silence and destroy Wikileaks.

Look down the very first paragraph of text until you get to the word “Israel” and read what it states there.

Israel is in good company, isn’t it?

And the latest gag order isn’t new, such orders and trials have occurred in the past, most notably regarding the Mordechai Vanunu case and a few cases involving General Security Services (Shabak) torture and abuse.

  5. Gandhi’s Grandson Visits Hebron, Israel Tries To Obstruct His Tour
As Rajmohan Gandhi, the grandson of Indian human rights leader, Mahatma Gandhi, and his wife Usha visited Hebron city, in the southern part of the West Bank on Sunday, Israeli soldiers tried to obstruct the visit.
Local sources in Hebron reported that as Gandhi and his wife, tried to visit an illegal settlement outpost installed near the Ibrahimi Mosque, Israeli soldiers tried to prevent them from crossing and installed additional roadblocks.

Palestinian legislator, former presidential candidate, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, accompanied Gandhi and his wife.

Israeli soldiers also detained a number of journalists and prevented them from reaching the areas.

After touring the Old City of Hebron, Gandhi stated that the Palestinian people must have their freedom and independence, and added that the electronic gates installed by Israel in front of the Ibrahimi Mosque are an insult to humanity.

He said that the Israeli violations in Hebron, the confiscation of homes and lands, and the constant attacks against the residents must be halted, and expressed his support to the Palestinian popular struggle for liberation and independence.

Gandhi further stated that the International Community must act and should be actively involved in ending the ongoing Israeli violations and attacks.

Thank you Mr. Gandhi, much appreciated, but could you please have a word with the people at the top in your gov’t of India! Ask them to show a bit of the humanity you’ve shown ? Those bastards are dancing a sleazy kind of Tango with the Israeli occupiers and are doing nothing to alleviate the suffering of the occupied.
    Thank you.

  7. Israeli Court Convicts Arab Youth Of “Collaborating With The Enemy”

Sultani was arrested last year and Israel claimed that he was recruited by the Lebanon-based Hezbollah Party to gather information about Israeli Army Chief of Staff, Gabi Ashkenazi.

Representing his son, attorney Fuad Sultani, stated that the state presented over exaggerated charges against his client.

He added that the whole case is about harassing a political activist who if forced to pay the price of the policies of the Israeli security devices.
Sultani also stated that the Israeli media also played a role in this type of unjust ruling.

“If the defendant was a Jew, the security devices would only have issued a warning”, he said, “But Israel want to punish the political activists, and we hereby confirm that we are part of the Palestinian people, the Arab nations, and we have the natural right to communicate with our nation everywhere”.

Israeli FM warns Palestinians not to declare state

Israel’s hard-line foreign minister warned Palestinians against plans to unilaterally declare independence next year, saying in an interview Tuesday that such a move could prompt Israel to annex parts of the West Bank and annul past peace agreements. Avigdor Lieberman also made harsh comments about Turkey, Israel’s increasingly alienated ally, saying the Turkish prime minister was coming to resemble Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi.

Heh. Yesterday Erdogan was Chavez. Today he is Qadafi. Will we be to Hitler by this time next week?

  9. Anat Kam found evidence of advance planning of cold murder civilian assassinations by senior officers of the IDF, and gave the evidence to Uri Blau, who published a story about it, but has had to flee to Europe to escape the consequences. Richard Silverstein first brought up the story on his blog, Tikun Olam

    link to richardsilverstein.com
but his first story focussed on how Anat Kam was trying to close down Israeli reports of her case, possibly as part of a plea bargain with the relevant Israeli authorities.

The resulting farce is that everyone outside Israel knows the story, but no-one inside Israel is allowed to.

Says something about an Israeli militarist state, right?

    • The resulting farce is that everyone outside Israel knows the story, but no-one inside Israel is allowed to.

turnabout is fair play, Richard Parker.
Israelis have a rollicking robust discussion about Israel’s relationship with US and its influence on US foreign policy. Americans can’t talk about it without being tagged an antisemite.

  10. Israeli security services ordered his deportation* on the grounds that he had published damaging reports about Israeli military conduct in the Occupied Territories.

*For the first time in a week, journalist Jared Malsin was allowed to use his mobile phone on Wednesday morning to inform Ma’an that he was being placed onto an El Al flight to New York. (IMEMC org)

Avner Cohen has researched various issues with regard to nuclear weapons, including deterrence, morality, and proliferation. His seminal work, Israel and the Bomb, which chronicled the Israeli nuclear program, was published in 1998. This book prompted him to **encounter problems** with the Israeli censor and **provoked substantial legal difficulties** upon his return to Israel to give a keynote speech at an academic conference. [** Ian Lustick said Cohen “had to flee to the US”

Israel is running a censored society, ya, cry me a river, that’s there problem.

what is really worrisome is that Israel is deporting all their criminals to the US! Whats up with that? That’s endangering Americans just like sending Gitmo prisoners to a prison in rural Illinois. Is Mossad going to follow their deportees to the US and assassinate them? Will that endanger American lives?
How is it Jews treat American borders like Swiss cheese — they come and go with no pause at any naturalization center. Does any other nation’s citizens have the right to come and go into the US at will?

    • sherbrsi says:

Does any other nation’s citizens have the right to come and go into the US at will?

IIRC it was an Israel Jew who immigrated to America and lobbied the government for laws allowing dual citizenship in the first place.

Chalk up another point for the “special relationship.”
