What’s really interesting here is that Google apparently translates what literally reads “occupation vehicles” as “IOF vehicles.” While that just so happens to be correct in this context, I wonder how would they know what occupation is being talked about? And it’s kinda funny that whoever wrote this description says “the pelting of IOF vehicles with stones” without attributing it to the “village youth,” as though it mysteriously happened.

I don’t get this. If “IOF” and “village youth” is not in the arabic text, why do you add these words, Austin Branion? Or, conversely, what is wrong with Google translation if it adds them just like you do?
I am struck by a couple of things. First, how much English both the lady and the IDF use. Is it common in the area and in these interactions between IDF and Palestinians for them to communicate in English?
Second, while not condoning a masked home invasion in the middle of the night, these kids are, basically, polite. They were sent there by some low-level officer, and are following orders. The IDF is full of pricks, and we often see those guys on videos beating up people or spraying them with mace. But there must be an equal number of IDF soldiers who know what they’re doing is wrong and who don’t want to be there.
Had this patrol been Americans in Iraq or Afghanistan, the lady would have gotten a rifle butt in the face and that would have been the end of the video.

Basically polite? Just “following orders?” Is there anything “polite” about this invasion of these people’s privacy? Would you defend the actions of masked gunmen (actually “kids,” as you point out; kids given too much power and abusing it too willingly) if they invaded your home in the middle of the night and wanted to question your sleeping five-year-old daughter? Think about what you are saying. How would you respond if these were Palestinians invading a Jewish home? And what purpose do the masks serve, other than to terrorise these people whose home their are defiling with their presence. Polite, my keester. These are thugs, plain and simple. If any one of them were my son I would be ashamed of their behavior.
There are many decent soldiers in the US army in Afghanistan. It’s an insult to compare them to IDF goons brought up on a non stop diet of hasbara.

Unfortunately where you are smart is also exactly where you are dumb. Choosing to focus on the language between oppressor and oppressed rather than the actual oppression and its morality kinds makes you look heartless. Choosing to focus on the alleged politeness of the soldiers in another, since the invasion of one’s home in the middle of the night, without a search warrant or cause, masked and heavily armed, photographing people without their consent, waking up children/threats to the security of state etc is, in the real universe, about the furthest you could get from polite and kinda makes one doubt your powers of perception and comprehension. And then choosing to compare the Israeli occupation favorably with that of the US occupations is your next mistake, since the ‘but they’re worse’ argument is hardly a moral one.
What you missed was the fear in the eyes of the soldiers. They know they don’t belong there. They know what they are doing is wrong. They know it’s not morally justified. Yet they cling to their fears and that of their society and keep doing what they are doing because they are only following orders. Yes, you yourself damned them by justifying their behavior in this way. When has that ever been an excuse?

For all of you Israeli-haters who cannot bear to see an objective comment on IDF soldiers that might be construed as positive, let me note the following:
I’m an ex-combat Marine, and I’ve seen plenty of how soldiers treat civilians in tense situations. I’ve also seen enough vids of IDF beating up on unarmed Palestinians. The IDF guys in this flick are behaving politely by any measure of comparison.
Busting into a house in the middle of the night is done under orders. But the way you speak to the people inside is a personal choice and we should be encouraging this sort of self-control rather than knee-jerkers like the critics here who want to demonize everybody and everything associated w/ Israel. Your attitude is as culpable for perpetuating this mess as the die-hard Zionists’.
As I clearly said, I don’t condone the raid, but I certainly condone the self-control I see in that video. If you can’t see it or can’t condone it, you’ve got a real problem.

Israel obviously wants nothing from a five year old child but if you wake her up in the middle of the night to intimidate her, her parents might very well get the message that they’re not wanted and leave the country, which is something Israel does want.

Every time I see those videos from the territories I think how bizarre it is to have these men in uniforms with guns in such a beautiful landscape. They insult the land. And they say they respect it.
