Israeli press first reported a patrol officer was called to the scene of the lynching in Zion Square as the attackers were screaming ‘Death to Arabs’ and chasing Palestinian the youths.
Google Translate: He chose not to intervene and left without calling additional forces. “It did not affect him, he chose not to intervene,” said the eyewitness.
New evidence interprets the young Arab attack in Zion Square indicate poor conduct of the Israel Police: newspaper “Ma’ariv” post this morning that the focus of police reports of events came about 40 minutes before the violent event. According to an eyewitness at the scene, a patrolman who was called to the scene watched young wild square, but left the place minute by beating young.
Muhammad, one of employee witnesses near the square cats, suggesting that the 100 center called the police and reported the event. A few minutes later a policeman arrived on a motorcycle tour of watching young people chasing Arabs but the officer chose not to intervene.
“The policeman arrived just as the boys began to shout ‘Death to Arabs’, he was right in the mess, he heard the curses, saw chase Arabs and beat them, but it did not affect him., He decided not to intervene and did not ask to send other teams to place,” said witness.
Jerusalem Police sources told the newspaper “Ma’ariv that the place did come Explorer police after receiving the complaint center. According scout scan performed and explained that some of the boys dispersed, and some came to Zion Square.
Times of Israel: Cop reportedly witnessed brutal Jerusalem beating
A policeman was present during a mass brawl in Jerusalem Thursday night that nearly left an Arab teen dead, but reportedly did nothing to stop what officials are calling an attempted “lynch.”
…….
Eyewitnesses said they called the police at the start of the brawl, some 40 minutes before Julani was severely beaten. As a result, a policeman arrived on a motorcycle, but he stood and watched without stopping the mob as violence unfolded, Maariv reported on Wednesday.
“He was right in the mess,” and could see and hear everything going on, one of the witnesses told the Hebrew daily. The policeman “saw how they [the mob] were chasing Arabs and hitting them, but he didn’t care,” the witness said.
Phone records from the night of the attack show that both witnesses spoke to the police dispatcher, Maariv wrote.
The police confirmed that the policeman arrived at the scene.
How might this have changed Amy Dickerson’s coverage at the New Yorker?
By the time the police arrive, their victim isn’t moving.
This attack has penetrated a firewall that often exists between much of the violence happening on the ground in Israel/Palestine and the US media.
Isabel Kershner at the New York Times: Young Israelis Held in Attack on Arabs
“This is directly tied to national fundamentalism that is the same as the rhetoric of neo-Nazis, Taliban and K.K.K.,” Mr. Aloni said. “This comes from an entire culture that has been escalating toward an open and blunt language based on us being the chosen people who are allowed to do whatever we like.”
The police said Thursday’s beating of Mr. Julani, who regained consciousness in the hospital on Sunday, resulted from a brawl after a girl in a crowd of Israeli youths complained that she had been harassed by an Arab. Micky Rosenfeld, a police spokesman, said the girl had spurred the crowd to seek vengeance, though her lawyer denied that on Israel Radio on Monday. The crowd then arbitrarily focused on Mr. Julani and his friends, Mr. Rosenfeld said, beating Mr. Julani until he lost consciousness.
“According to those questioned, there was a fight, there was cursing,” Mr. Rosenfeld said. “One thing led to another.”
Mr. Julani, a youth of slender build with fashionably short hair from the predominantly Palestinian East Jerusalem neighborhood of Ras al-Amud, said in an interview from his hospital bed on Monday that he had no memory of what had happened — or even of being downtown on Thursday. But relatives at his bedside, including a cousin who was with him at the time of the assault, said the attack had been unprovoked.
The cousin, Muhammad Mujahid, 17, said he and four friends were walking in the square and suddenly found themselves being chased by a group of youths. “They were shouting ‘Arabs, death to Arabs,’ ” he said. “I saw about 50 people chasing us. We ran, but about 10 of them caught Jamal.”
Asked whether he would return to West Jerusalem at night, Mr. Mujahid said: “I don’t want to go back there. I’ve learned.”
Mr. Julani’s mother, Nariman, described the attackers as “terrorists, fanatics.”
“We have no ideas about politics,” said Mrs. Julani, 44. “We brought our children up to study, to be good and to love their homeland.”

Of course. This is standard operating procedure in the West Bank and now in Israel itself.
As a side note, has Peter Beinart yet acknowledged the irony that his little “Zion Square” website he is so proud of, a space that never seems to include a Palestinian voice, is named for what is now understood as “the place where Palestinians are lynched”? Has Zion Square changed “Zion Square,” or cause it to question liberal Zionism even a little?
Something odd is going on. The title of his website is now “Open Zion,” not “Zion Square.” How long has this been true?
In changing the title, he forgot to change his column explaining WHY it is call “Zion Square.”
link to thedailybeast.com
I imagine this will soon disappear down the memory hole.
Anyway, I answered my original question. Open Zion had one report on the lynching (“How Will We Sleep Tonight?”) four days ago. Since then, it has had three reports on Iran, one on American anti-muslim violence, one on the environment, and one column explaining that linking Zionism to racism is communist propaganda. This last column actually did contain a mention of the lynching in the very last paragraph (noting “the yahoos who do not appreciate Israel’s delicate and diverse democratic dance”).
How Will We Sleep Tonight? was a really good article. i think i linked to it in a comment earlier, or meant to.
The namechange to ‘Open Zion’ has been in effect for months now.
And Open Zion did publish pieces on the lynching and Beinart does let Palestinian voices out with regular frequency without censorship.
He makes it clear, however, that it’s still a website focused on the same subject as his book ‘The Crisis of Zionism’. So it’s victims do get a slot, but at some level he also wants to ‘save’ Zionism(as naive as it sounds to you) and that means he has to base a significant part of the discussion from a Jewish perspective.
Beinhart is still asking Jews to get on the liberal Zionist Golden Path, yet his sequential articles are inconsistent on how to get there. He’s way over his head, or rather, he’s confused, and it shows. Read his latest stuff in conjunction with earlier stuff.
“He’s way over his head, or rather, he’s confused, and it shows”
Sure, there’s got to be another reason. The reason just can’t be that we got taken, but good. Just can’t be that Jews are no better than anybody else. No! I know, we’ve been wonderful for inventing Zionism (like colonial projects are a Jewish invention.) now, we will be wonderful for dumping it. As if we were giving up so much by ridding ourselves of it.
Watch, that’s where he (and many others) will end up. It’s the logical end for all the “Jewish values” stuff. Zionism was a triumph of Jewish values when it was in fashion. Now, getting rid of Zionism (in one’s self or politics, in the US, in Israel, whatever) will be the triumph of Jewish values.
But mark my words, it’ll be a moral, values triumph.
- “Now, getting rid of Zionism … will be the triumph of Jewish values.”
———————————————-
Mooser, there was no “triumph of Jewish values” before the advent of Zionism (there was a triumph of anti-Semitism) – why should there suddenly be a triumpf of “moral” Jewish values when Zionism is gone?
I know what you mean – purifying Judaism of Zionism.
But was Judaism morally pure before Zionism? – I doubt that.
“But was Judaism morally pure before Zionism? – I doubt that.”
Klaus, everybody knows what kind of people doubt the purity of pre-Zionism Judaism. Do you wish to join them?
What’s your evidence (as if you had any!) that before Zionism Judaism was not as pure as the driven slush?
Mooser, I’d be happy to answer your second question when you first explain to me what is meant by “driven slush”.
As to your first question:
There are a variety of people who doubted the purity of pre-Zionist Judaism. In particular the Zionists themselves. They saw Judaism as corrupted and wanted to purify it by establishing a Jewish state.
“There are a variety of people who doubted the purity of pre-Zionist Judaism. In particular the Zionists themselves. They saw Judaism as corrupted and wanted to purify it by establishing a Jewish state.”
Gosh, the things I learn from you, Klaus! I was completely unaware of this, and it changes my entire perspective! How on earth did you find this out? I’ve been wondering about this for years, but nobody knew.
BillM, “liberal Zionism”? An oxymoron.
“We have no ideas about politics,” said Mrs. Julani, 44. “We brought our children up to study, to be good and to love their homeland.”
According to the thugs they have no right to their homeland. No right to walk in Al Quds. That is the cancer at the heart of Zionism .
Kershner- young Israelis held in attack on **Arabs**.
The name “Palestinian” is still too incendiary for the Grey Lady.
“We brought our children up to study, to be good and to love their homeland.”
i was so moved by Mrs. Julani’s words at one pt i used it as the title.
And who is civilised – Mr Julani or the Israelis who almost beat him to death ?
Funny how shameful it all is now. Why the hands on faces ?

Just look at the “boys will be boys” smirk on the face of an Israeli policeman and the lackadaisical attitude of soldiers milling about the 19 year woman whose face was bloodied after being spat upon.
i think the magistrate should consult with rabbi ovadia ‘the pals are donkeys’ yosef before conducting any further proceedings. it’s the right thing to do. poor boys. i can’t even begin to imagine how this will affect their self-esteem.

Oh, how nice, an article on the early Zionists possibly even delving into the Nakba. Must be sure to read it, I love history stuff from late British Colonial era.

(Shimon Peres) assured the president of Cameroon that “a Jew who accepts apartheid ceases to be a Jew. A Jew and racism do not go together “
ceases to be a Jew? that confirms it, israel can no longer be considered a jewish state.
“that confirms it, israel can no longer be considered a jewish state.”
I don’t care what their religion is, what they are doing to the original inhabitants of the place is shameful, and criminal.
Mooser says: August 22, 2012 at 6:28 pm
Plain and simple. The crux. The issue. Nothing more to be said.
“Nothing more to be said.”
Oh, I could probably come up with something.
>> A Jew and racism do not go together
Except where a Jew desires an oppressive, colonialist, expansionist and supremacist “Jewish State”. But, y’know, that’s not really “racism”, that’s just 3,000 years of history coming into play and Jews “returning” to land neither they nor dozens of generations of their ancestors have ever even been to.
“Jewish State” is an ugly state / of mind.
The only real Jewish State is the state of being Jewish.
That place isn’t so ugly and I’m happy to visit it from time to time and can heartily recommend it.
The other place? I’ll pass, even if they have Donkey Wi-fi technology. ;/
thank you shegetz, i heartily agree!
btw, the comments in that jpost link from the other thread you linked to are downright freaky.
and from the tone of his other comments i do not think he is joking. i am a little surprised jpost allows this. and this:
>> The other place? I’ll pass, even if they have Donkey Wi-fi technology. ;/
Since the Zio-supremacist is already an ass, the donkey seems somewhat redundant…
“That place isn’t so ugly and I’m happy to visit it from time to time and can heartily recommend it.”
Sure, Zionism and Israel, the biggest project the Jews and Judaism have ever taken on, and the one requiring the biggest communal effort and sacrifice, the one involving more Jews in a united effort than any other, doesn’t reflect Judaism at all. Funny how that happens.
Oy another one who thinks we’ll get off scot-free if we distract people with a Jewish magic-lantern show. He’s in for a rude awakening, methinks. We will be judged by our actions, not our self-promotion.
“(Shimon Peres) assured the president of Cameroon that “a Jew who accepts apartheid ceases to be a Jew. A Jew and racism do not go together “
“But fortunately” Shimon added to himself, “he will still be an Israeli and a good one!”
This is getting me sick, the way Judaism is used in this entire Zionism debate. By both sides, frankly. Zionist, anti-Zionist, Judaism is everybody’s bitch. If she acts up you just slap her around and send her out to bring back some money.
tree, i grabbed some of that for my other post, thanks again. it was a great article by Noam Sheizaf.

Lancethruster says: “Boy howdy! Who do you call when the cops are crooked?”
Saying ‘the cops are crooked’ implies that they are not doing what they are supposed to do.
This is Israel. This is what they are supposed to do.
Exactly. It’s a Jewish ethnocracy for Jews only. Palestinians are not human in the Israeli legal system. The police are just following orders.
Well I am sure they have some sort of complaint bureau for redress of grievances, no?
All it would take for justice to be achieved would be for the Palestinian gentleman to document and submit the details of his assault and the injuries suffered due to police inaction and complicity, and the Israeli officials woud tend to it in the unbiased fashion we’ve come to expect and that would be the end of it.
Problem solved!
I see LanceThruster is intent on avoiding hypoferremia today. His comment helped me meet my MDR, too.
Yep, this is what they and the IDF when settlers attack Palestinians, burn their mosques and schools. Why should Jerusalem be any different. God sanctioned it, didn’t she? (according to them)
A good Jew hates Arabs
Hatred of Arabs is part of the test of loyalty and identity that the state gives its Jewish citizens – a loyal Israeli will leave an Arab to die, because ‘he’s an Arab.’
By Zvi Bar’el
link to haaretz.com
Israeli “literature” promoting hate of Arabs predates the occupation. The children’s book series “Danidin” by Shraga Gafni is full of expressions and illustrations that laid excellent infrastructure for Arab-hatred. The “Mikraot Yisrael” (Israeli Readers ) series, which helped educate hundreds of thousands of Israeli children, is striking in terms of the “incitement” concealed within it.
Similar books published in the Palestinian Authority keep those who monitor Palestinian incitement very busy. But there isn’t really a need to list all the recipes for Arab-hatred that have been fed to us, and which we developed on our own, in order to come up with a defense for those criminals in Jerusalem, whose “only crime” was to do what Israeli pedagogy and the “Death-to-Arabs” ethos directed them to do.
This is an ethos that will continue to be an integral part of the Israeli-Jewish national identity, even if the occupation were to end tomorrow. Because “Death to the Arabs” isn’t an expression of “routine” hatred of those who are different, or the loathsome slogan of some “price tag” gang. It does not resemble the xenophobia or the fear of Muslims that characterizes European racism.
Hatred of Arabs is part of the test of loyalty and identity that the state gives its Jewish citizens. A good Jew hates Arabs. A loyal Israeli will leave an Arab to die, because “he’s an Arab.” And someone who isn’t like that, as we know, “sleeps with Arabs.”
On another note, the Israeli court verdict in the #RachelCorrie civil case brought by her parents will B announced next Tuesday, on the morning of August 28th. Will Rachel’s parent’s get their token one dollar from the state of Israel because that state bulldozed their child out of existence with their free and massive US tool? Tune in!
To draw back a bit, this ferocious communalism is also a symptom of a larger problem.
It’s not just Jews versus Palestinians. Anyone ever notice that periodic fussing about Sephardim in Ashkenazi schools and vice-versa, Ethiopians in anyone else’s schools, etc?
I suspect the root problem is that ‘Israeli’ is not anyone’s core identity. They might call themselves that — but what they are really thinking is ‘Secular Ashkenazi,’ ‘Russian,’ etc. The core identity is some smaller group.
Israel isn’t really a nation. Hence the pathological need for conflict. There has to be an external enemy. Else there just isn’t anything to hold people together.
Naturally, all this is true of everyone — but to a considerably lesser extent. We all have subsidiary identities — but nevertheless see ourselves as primarily American or German or whatever rather than ‘Catholic of Italian extraction’ or whatever. Similarly, it’s all too common for national identity to be expressed as hostility towards an outsider. But in Israel, the nation lacks anything approaching an authentic common cultural core — and so other identities persistently take precedence. Witness the plethora of parties that are above all aimed at some specific socio-ethnic group. A party like Shas — commanding 9% of the vote and devoted at least apparently solely to the economic and religious preoccupations of one specific group — would be simply unimaginable in the US or any other authentic nation.
“I suspect the root problem is that ‘Israeli’ is not anyone’s core identity.”
You should write more about this. Your post is the first time I’ve ever seen this perspective on the Israeli identity, or, as you point out, lack of Israeli identity. Must marvel at your subtle perception, denoting a fact many Israelis themselves have overlooked.
“You should write more about this. Your post is the first time I’ve ever seen this perspective on the Israeli identity, or, as you point out, lack of Israeli identity. Must marvel at your subtle perception, denoting a fact many Israelis themselves have overlooked.”
Yes Mooser. Your sarcasm is noted and appreciated.
But the point is that therefore (a) Israel is not a viable nation, unless (b) it can maintain a more or less perpetual state of hostility with those around it, and from this follows (c) that so long as Israel exists, there cannot be peace. Israel could not survive it.
I think Israel’s rulers are aware of this — sometimes their actions suggest they are consciously aware of it. Israel, therefore, will always seek to provoke conflict with someone. To survive, she has to.
So there can’t be peace. While it may well be necessary to let others pretend this is the goal, it’s not gonna happen, and it’s a waste of time to pursue it. Ultimately, the only real goal is to bring about a situation in which significantly larger numbers of Jews are leaving than are going in. That done, collapse will eventually ensue. A ‘peace’ agreement — probably several of them — will mark the path to this end, but they aren’t the goal, and they won’t last anyway.
Many many people have noticed the different ramifications of the Israeli identity (such as it is, of course). Some of the Israelis who post here have touched on it. Shmuel or one of the other commenters who have lived in Israel, or those more widely read (I avoid the subject like the plague, myself) may be able to recommend a book or articles on it, and fill in details on what makes up the Israeli identity.
I suspect that without an external ‘existential threat’ that the ‘Real Jews’ would turn on the ‘Fake Jews’ in about a nano-second.
It already seems to happen with alarming regularity until something big enough occurs to distract everyone from hating each other and focus outwards again.
But it never lasts for long.
” something big enough occurs to distract everyone from hating each other and focus outwards again.”
You say that almost as if you think the ‘something bigs’ are coincidental. Often, they’re quite obviously not.
“I suspect that without an external ‘existential threat’ that the ‘Real Jews’ would turn on the ‘Fake Jews’ in about a nano-second.”
Yes, remember the NYTs editorial the other day which bemoaned Israel’s preponderence and influence of “Ultra-Orthodox and “non-secular” Jews? The “Fake Jews” may turn on the “Real Jews”!
Colin
I think the civil state in Israel is too weak. Israel is essentially run by the Army and the interests of the Army take precedence. The institutions of democracy are subservient to the needs of the Army. The justice system is a joke.
There is nobody in charge of looking after the interests of the people so the people just take whatever they can.
It’s highly dysfunctional.
“Israel is essentially run by the Army and the interests of the Army take precedence.”
The Army’s interests are served by being bossed around by the settlers? Of course, it could be that they are, considering the make-up of the IDF.
The Army is one big slush fund of money that actually in any normal country would be spent on families, the sick and the elderly

Shalom and welcome to America! This your first time here?
Sorta goes for both countries, doesn’t it, Seafoid?
Interesting and, sadly enough, probably a very valid observation.
This story and other recent ones like it demolish the fiction that “vibrant Democratic Israel” can be cordoned off from the abuses taking place in the Occupied Territories. Depravity has a way of permeating everything over time.
Well what happened to my comment, it got ditched.
Did it offend someone?
Let me shorten it.
Come out of your protected enclave Zios, Palestines as whipping boys for your grievances against the anti semitic world, isn’t worthy of the mighty power you claim to be, come after us instead. We, the gentiles, the christians, the americans, the europeans, are the original sinners you justify Israel and everything about it on, so come on out and let’s settle it equal to equal, truth to truth and man to man.

Well…if Obama said that tomorrow, it would have the virtue of livening up the race.
“so come on out and let’s settle it…”
Be careful what you wish for! You haven’t heard of “The Sampson Option”? Or Dolphin-class submarines armed with nuclear weapons?
Yeah, and their German-made submarines too!
“Yeah, and their German-made submarines too!”
I thought those were the “Dolphin-class” submarines. I didn’t check, so I could easily be wrong, but yes, those German-made subs are the ones I meant.

“A comment posted at the NYT blog by someone with far more knowledge of Israel than most of the commenters Phil allows here deserves repeating…”
There you are. History is what happens while we’re busy with other things. I’m inclined to doubt the New York Times would have allowed that post to appear ten years ago.
We tend to remain in the same position relative to each other. Each poster to each other, each to the great NYT, etc. This obscures the extent to which the center of gravity of the whole system is shifting. Thirty years ago, Israel’s complete legitimacy was taken as a given by anyone except those way out on the fringe. There were a few warts and pimples — but she was essentially no more in danger of delegitimization than Canada is.
“Thirty years ago, Israel’s complete legitimacy was taken as a given by anyone except those way out on the fringe.”
Ah, so that’s why I felt that way thirty years ago, and more. Zionism always gave me the heebie-jeebies. When they weren’t trying to make me fight, they were trying to make me work. One I thought was inhuman, and the other, very un-Jewish.
I wonder what’s left of Oleg’s attack a few days ago on those of us who always assume the worst of Israel.
So, we now know:
1) The attack was a lynch, not a brawl – as we said early on.
2) The police was complicit – as the familes of the victims accused (and we assumed).
Perhap it’s correct to conclude that our fondest hopes of what Israel should be don’t necessarily match the reality.
By the way, where’s Fredblogs on this?
Discretion never was his strong point. I was looking forward to seeing the mighty warrior for Zion take on this challenge.

Those “police” don’t look terribly effective, so I can see why one walked. At least they could ALL wear playstation tees, just to be uniform.
I’ve never heard of on duty police wearing random outfits like that, unless they were working undercover, which these ones obviously were not doing. Bizarre.
This is a bit strange, actually. Photos of Sheik Jarrah demonstration usually show regular beefy policemen who do look shy at all. Perhaps there is a special unit to deal with teenagers?
Vocabulary disputes are somewhat moot. Was it a lynch, a racist brawl or a pogrom? Personally, I would call it a pogrom. To me lynch is a bit more organized and ends with killing or maiming of the selected victim. A brawl is two sided.
Call me lazy, but was someone actually “lynched”? A rope around their neck and lifted into the trees? Or was it just a serious “ass whipping”? I’ve experienced the later, more than once, but we dished it out as well. Have the Israelis grown so bold?
There was no evidence in Lebanon in 2006 of such toughness. A bunch of panicked little girls that punished civilians when they were whipped on their way out. As they ran away, they weren’t lynching anyone, just tripping over one another.
Hej!

It must have been a pretty serious ass-whipping if you were thought to be dead when found, were unconscious for a day, and couldn’t remember what had happened when you came to.

smart eguard. it’s true they only reported it once the story became about the arrest. same with the US reporting the slaughter in afghanistan…and otherembarrassing news. however, i think in my preface to the nyt blockquote i mentioned why i posted it. (This attack has penetrated a firewall that often exists between much of the violence happening on the ground in Israel/Palestine and the US media.) and the question then becomes… why? why this attack?
Barbarity is barbarity, whether it is committed by Jews or Arabs.
I wonder if anyone has the statistics for Jewish attacks on Arabs, and Arab attacks on Jews?
Which are more common?
Which are more deadly?
Thanks
Are you joking, aware? I believe If Americans Knew is a good place to start. IAK has it as 6,568 Palestinians killed to 1,096 Israelis killed, since September 29, 2000
So the Israelis are killing Palestinians at a rate of about 7 to 1. And the “Arabs” you are talking about are Palestinians, and the “Jews” are Israelis. This is not attacks by groups of people in a no-man’s land, It’s an attack by an armed state on a pretty much defenseless people, with very little armed strength at all. They have been invaded and occupied by Israel for over 40 years now.
If you look at “If Americans Knew” and the tabs at the top of the Mondoweiss page, you can get a pretty good overview of the situation. You might even become “aware” of what’s happening “aware” enough to stop with that “Jews” and “Arabs” crap.
