Video: Jewish mob chanting ‘Death to Arabs!’ stops cars in Jerusalem to check drivers’ ethnicity

Israel/Palestine
on 71 Comments

The video above was shot last night by Ronnie Barkan in Jerusalem. He tells me the locations are as follows:

PM residence, Hatulot square (downtown), en route to East Jerusalem (they didn’t enter East Jerusalem both coz they’re not SUCH idiots and secondly because the police used a stun grenade against then which made them step back)

In perhaps the most frightening scene they start flagging down taxis presumably looking for Palestinian drivers (they let cars pass once they see a driver is Jewish).

David Sheen has this on his twitter feed.

Who’s the tall, wellbuilt guy who confronts them? I noticed how at least two of them stepped back when he got into their faces. Most of these people are cowards, just like their PM.

Wow…Nazi Zionism….Apartheid regime…out of control…the Israeli police in cahoots with what seems to be lynching mobs looking for Arabs…non-Jewish!!!

All out there in the streets…with their chants…Death to Arabs….your mother is a whore…and so on…

Disgusting indeed….and the American taxpayers are footing Apartheid Israel’s bills at $8.5 million dollars per day…every day!

The officially accepted number is $8.5 million per day. The actual cost to the USA for its unwavering support of Israel is far higher

I’m always amazed at stream of abusive, dirty language, first from the Hebron settlers and now from this bunch in Jerusalem. I guess that’s the natural mode of expression when you walk through life with a permanent chip on your shoulder.

Seem that Jewish cars were being stopped in the west bank; one was burned. At least this happened according to Michael Omer-Man at +972.. Tit for Tat, except it isn’t.

8:51 P.M. Economy Minister Naftali Bennett responds to the news, saying, “The murder of children is unforgivable. Our hearts are with the families right now. Now is the time for actions; not talk.” (Barak Ravid)

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon: “I join the parents and other family members in their heavy mourning, and hope to remain strong for them on this tough day.” Ya’alon adds: “We see Hamas as responsible for the kidnapping and murder, and know we will settle the score with them. We will continue to pursue the murderers of the boys, and we won’t be silent and we won’t rest until they are in our hands

9:08 A.M.: Several incidents of Jewish reprisal attacks against Arabs were reported through Monday night”

“Right-wing Israeli minister Naftali Bennett said Sunday condemned the abduction and murder of a Palestinian teen last as “despicable, immoral and anti-Jewish,” after it emerged that police had arrested six suspects and increasingly believed it to be the act of Jewish extremism. ”

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said in a statement Sunday that he was “embarrassed and horrified by the brutal murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir.” He also called on treating the boy’s murderers like all other terrorists. ”

Jewish vigilantism is the death sentence for the Israeli right’s rhetoric of revenge.

Of course not, because that would mean blowing up the houses of the suspects’ families before they are even convicted of anything. Apparently that is a deterrent for Arabs but doesn’t work with Jews for some reason.

Probaly means , “safe in our hands”.

Why not hand them over to the Palestinians so they can “settle the score with them” (yalon,s words).

There are many Palestinian taxi drivers in West (Jewish) Jerusalem. They must have been terrified. For instance, in the middle of the large neighborhood of Gilo (at the southern end of Jerusalem, annexed by Israel and legally, a West Bank settlement), there are two competing taxi cab companies. One is staffed, mostly by Palestinian drivers. The owners of the medallions, of course, are Jewish. (The other employs Jews only and advertises its racially discriminatory hiring policy as a selling point.) These cabs connect Gilo to the center of Jerusalem, where these thugs were in action.

In perhaps the most frightening scene they start flagging down taxis presumably looking for Palestinian drivers (they let cars pass once they see a driver is Jewish).

Certainly not to excuse this, but by way of explanation, its probably related to the fact that a Palestinian Israeli taxi driver recently confessed to killing Israeli Shelly Dadon, who was murdered on May 1st. In the minds of the rioters of course if one Palestinian is guilty then they all are. Actually, that seems to be the mindset of quite a few Israelis, if not the majority.

The suspect was arrested on June 16th. The police just cleared the information about his arrest for publication Sunday. Seems like a particularly bad time to publicize this if one is at all sensitive to the tensions in Israel at the moment, But nothing the police do in Israel really surprises me. Insensitivity reigns.

      Perhaps. Doubt it.

Their PM has made them thirsty for revenge, and continues to do so. He and others in the GoI and rabbis and others have fueled and then fanned the flames of hatred and violence. Apparently, many Israelis are just doing what they were encouraged to do.

So they are now state- sponsored vigilantes… hordes of them.

I’m not discounting the government encouraged incitement at all, simply pointing out why they were particularly hailing taxis to beat up Palestinian taxi drivers in particularly in addition to looking for other Palestinians to beat up.

Yes, just, I did too. The man was in custody and therefore not a threat to anyone and Israel usually has no compunction about extending gag orders indefinitely. So why lift the gag order on the Dadon murder now, when it is likely to inflame more mob violence, and has in fact done so? Totally irresponsible.

It reminds so much of blood thirsty nazis, chanting and calling for the deaths of Jews, in this case Arabs. WOW, the hatred and viciousness in their speech is unbelievable.
I can just image how terrifying this must have been for poor Arab families. To feel hunted and hated, just like the Jews felt in Europe. Look at their descendants now, being the aggressors, the hate mongers, carrying a flag and shouting vile words.
Bibi must be PROUD of his human animals. They are snarling and ready to kill.

Their families, the Israeli education system, fundamentalist religious teaching. Even if not directly, these kids are indoctrinated to believe that the Palestinians hate them and want to kill them. They are the eternal victims and their entire upbringing, unless they have decent and wise parents and teachers, is to militarize and prepare them for military service.

I’m sorry, but have any of you seen what happens in the Middle East when one ethnicity perpetrates an atrocity against another? Seen Iraq or Syria lately? Jewish vigilantism is unfortunate, and virtually the entire Jewish world in the US and in Israel opposes this kind of thing.

But apparently, it only matters when Jews act like this, because somehow, they’re less human than the Arabs throughout the Middle East who act much worse than a few extreme settlers in Jerusalem, except without the opprobrium these settlers face throughout the Jewish world.

I mean, Max Blumenthal likes to say that Jews should “indigenize” or leave the region. Seems to me these crazy vigilantes are far more indigenized to the ways of the Middle East than their more genteel brothers and sisters, who condemn them across the board.

      >> I’m sorry, but have any of you seen what happens in the Middle East when one ethnicity perpetrates an atrocity against another?

Of course: Israel has been perpetrating atrocity after atrocity against Palestinians for over 60 years. But because it has been done – and continues to be done – for the glory of Jewish supremacism and the supremacist “Jewish State”, you’re not the least bit sorry.

      >> But apparently, it only matters when Jews act like this, because somehow, they’re less human than the Arabs throughout the Middle East …

It’s not because Jewish Israelis are less human, but rather because they seem to think they’re super-human; and the Arabs among and around them, sub-human.

It really should come as no surprise to anyone that people expect Israel – a country that never tires of proclaiming itself the best country in the region and one of the best countries in the world (a “moral beacon”, even!) – to live up to its own hype and act better than Saudi Arabia, Mali and African “hell-holes”.

“the Arabs among and around them, sub-human.”

Not at all. The Arabs are very much human. It is the nature of human beings of different ethnicities to fight, unfortunately.

I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but, really, most countries have some national narrative by which they claim to be the best at something. I can only surmise that the reason Arabists get so upset when Israel makes that claim is because they are embarrassed about the depth of the problems in Arab countries.

A word of advice: spend the energy you spend bashing Israel trying to improve Arab civil societies so that they put aside their religious and ethnic difference, and form sustainable democracies (something other than one-off elections that bring incompetent sectarians to power).

          hophmi: Not at all.

Richard Silverstein has an update on the suspects in the Khdeir torture and slaying. Here’s some background on the ringleader, Yizhar Basri.

Bazri’s grandfather is the head of the Jerusalem rabbinical court, a distinguished religious position. Another relative is a noted Shas-affiliated Kabbalist-wonder rabbi, Rabbi David Bazri, who was convicted of hate speech (Hebrew) in 2008. Their offence involved incitement against Arabs which occurred at a protest against the founding of a bi-cultural Jewish-Arab school in a Jerusalem neighborhood. He said, in a homily reminiscent of the views of Rabbi Yosef:

The founding of this school is an act of rot and impurity. You cannot mix the pure and impure. We [Jews] certainly must be separated from other peoples [Arabs]. You will stand in the breach against this and prevent it. It is prohibited to mix light and dark [ed., a veiled reference to skin-color]. Jews are pure. Arabs are asses. They are devils, demons, diseased. So why did God make them walk on all fours? Because they are donkeys. That’s why they build and clean [a reference to Palestinian construction workers and garbage collectors]. But they must understand that they are donkeys. They have no place in our schools.

In the context of Israeli religious hate, this is garden variety stuff. As I said, many Jewish rabbis say even worse. But what’s important about this statement is seeing how it was absorbed and implemented by Yizhar Bazri. Clearly, the tradition of homicidal hate runs right through the entire family. It’s not a surprise that it would manifest itself as it has.

Hophmi’s ‘fantasy Israel’ convicted the Rabbi for a hate speech crime.

No, in hophmi’s fantasy, no Israeli Jew thinks he is superior to an Arab, so no such hate speech could have happened, certainly not one given by a popular Rabbi.

            In the real Israel:

Rabbi David Batzri and his son Yitzhak were investigated by police after they made racist remarks against Arabs and protested against a mixed Arab-Jewish school in Jerusalem.[66][67] As part of a 2008 plea bargain, Yitzhak was sentenced to community service, and David issued a declaration saying he was opposed to any racist incitement and said that he calls for love, brotherhood and friendship.[68]

            link to en.wikipedia.org

So Rabbi David Batzri got off scot-free with a phony declaration. Wow, I’m impressed….Not. Apparently as a Jew in Israel you can get away with calling Arabs impure diseased animals as long as you insist later that you did so with great feelings of love and brotherhood. Israel is supposed to be a first world country run according to the rule of law. This vigilante episode is interesting because Israel has been running a right wing hatred program for a number of years and the results are beginning to emerge. By all means compare the Disneyland to Iraq or Syria but you should be able to do way better than that.

Can Israel keep a lid on the settler/nationalist right ? That’s the big question.

I tooled over the the ADL website to see what they had to say about the lynching in Jerusalem. I could not restrain myself from commenting.

“While we await the police investigation into the apparent abduction and possible murder (possible murder?) of an Arab teen, we cannot wait to speak out against incendiary calls for violence and revenge by some Israelis. (Ignore the fact that some of these Israelis were its leaders)

We all feel outrage and heartbreak over the murder of Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaar and Eyal Yifrach. Yet there is no justification for vigilante violence and acts of revenge targeting Arabs. (So why are you not speaking out against collective punishment?) Any loss of life — be it Israeli or Arab — is a tragedy. Vengeance is not a part of Judaism or Jewish tradition. (Yes, it is.)

In their eulogies, the parents of the three Israeli teens spoke of unity and love, with no calls for vengeance. (Unlike the Israeli government) It is a sad reality that among many Palestinians, the public messages have not been about love and peace but about hatred and conflict. (In fact Abbas has shown more statesmanship than the entire Israeli government)

We support the Prime Minister’s call for a swift and intensive probe into the apparent (?!) attack in Beit Hanina. (And will ignore his bloodthirsty rhetoric just the day before) Whoever is responsible must be brought to justice.”

    Color me not impressed.

“and of course, everyone should also forget there are still child murdering suspects running around loose with the aid of some in Palestinian society”

When the Israelis regularly start turning the I”D”Fers and “police” who assault and kill Palestinians, over to the Palestinian authorities for trial and imprisonment, then perhaps you’d have cause to complain.

Hey, man, they got kidnapped in area c, which is under complete Israeli control. So if Israel with all it’s high falutin’ technology and lantern jawed commandos and billions from the US can’t find the perps take it up with them.

Also when the trials start for the Abu Khdeir killers there will be plenty of Jewish folks supporting them.

Strange the wonderful Israel sleuths and spies cannot pinpoint on any suspects, or firmly give evidence exactly who the murderers of the 3 young kids are. Accusing Hamas without any proof seems to be going nowhere.
Now the case of the unfortunate Mohammed Khdeir, that was clear from the beginning, because of video evidence, and eye witnesses.
Israel does not look good now, because of it’s rush to judgement, and the ensuing crimes committed by it’s own people against kids.
It must be hard to admit you have human animals in your house too.

@DaBakr, The family homes of the Palestinian suspects (against whom no evidence has been presented) have been demolished, in a typical display of Israeli “justice.”

When do you suppose the family homes of the accused Israelis will be demolished?

Let’s keep this proportionate Kris. One home demolition is equivalent to a Jewish manicure – you know, finger nail being = to one Arab life and all.

Awful article in TPM by Josh Marshall. All equivalency hasbara, all the time.
Also, I believe identifies himself as a Zionist, and all the special pleading that implies.
Worst of all, he takes Jeffrey Goldberg seriously, as a source of information on the topic.

From their PMs and some rabbis, teachers and parents.

Those chanting in the video sometimes appear to be hopping up and down like football (soccer) fans. These racist chants are probably identical to those learned by Beitar Jerusalem hoodlums.

Netanyahu, and his brutal , racist, apartheid government, should be beaten upon arrival in any foreign travel. The war criminals who ordered and carried out the murders on the USS Liberty, the peace flotilla, Rachel Corrie, and these latest outrages, should be hunted down and brought to justice like Adolph Eichmann and the other Nazi war criminals they absolutely mirror.
