The American ‘Street’ Stuns the World

What a great night to be an American! Once again we have demonstrated the vitality of our democracy. Our history is a struggle between elites and small-d democrats for access to power, and tonight Iowa has demonstrated the progressive leadership of the people. A black man in the White House–tonight that is more than a pipedream. I have awe and admiration for the campaigns of Huckabee and Obama, but more for a political process that has granted such leverage to a small, rural, highly-educated state as a change agent. When people talk about the "Arab street" they are talking about aroused ordinary people. We have our street too. Cherish the moment. It may soon pass. And note that both Obama and Huckabee were highly-critical of Bush’s deluded foreign policy.
